I found out today that my sweet baby Cosmo has advanced HCM. Words can’t describe how broken I am. He’s only 18 months old. I can’t stop thinking how his brother, Colin is going to take it.

For anyone that’s lost one of their fur(less) babies, how did you cope while looking after their siblings? My heart absolutely breaks for Colin. I hate to think how lost and lonely he’s going to feel.

I’m so sorry. It’s an ugly illness. Is he seeing a cardiologist? You can buy some precious time with the right medications.

Thank you xxx

He went to a specialist clinic today and they’ve given me some heart thinners for him but the prognosis isn’t great.

It’s an awful illness and it feels so much worse knowing there’s nothing we can do.

So sorry your Cosmo has advanced HCM. Try to cherrish every day you have with Cosmo.
If Colin has a good bond with Cosmo and likes to cuddles and play with Cosmo, getting a new buddy can surely help Colin. But if it's too soon for you to think about it, then just take your time. Colin has you and your love and you will pull eachother through this when Cosmo's time has come.
If it feels good for you, then know there is no good or wrong. Getting a new naked baby doesn't mean he or she will replace Cosmo. It just means you get some extra love in your house and heart.

Of course. It’s very early to think about but is he likely to want another companion? I can’t even imagine getting another cat but I want to make sure Colin isn’t lonely.
I think I understand how you feel. It's not only sad to lose one, but now you're worried for the survivor.

For what it's worth I'll share my experience. I used to have 2 girls that were sisters. They were I think 12 when the first one crossed over the rainbow bridge. The surviving one had kidney disease and lymphoma, so I decided not to bring in a new cat and stress her out. When she passed, I gave myself a month. Then I got another one, and a few months later a second one so that they could play with each other when I was at work. Your situation is different in that Colin is quite young and would probably take to a new pal to roam around with. It really comes down to when you are ready. You don't have to worry about it this soon anyway. For now just give Cosmo the best quality of life and take things one day at a time.

Big hugs to you! I've been there, lost my Ossi (4 years old) to this horrible illness. Our girl Fisen lost her friend. I was lucky to get a new cat pretty fast, but sadly Fisen also passed away just four months after Ossi. A double blow that was heartbreaking. So I played it safe and now have three cats, just in case... I know I sound totally crazy but this was my way. If you ever want to talk, just contact me. Again, millions of hugs to you!

Just catching up. I am saddened along with you to hear this news. Take peace in knowing you are doing all you can and that your baby knows nothing but your love and that is everything to them.

Thank you that’s really sweet. I can’t imagine losing the other so soon after the first.

Cosmo and Colin are my first and I just don’t know how I’m going to get through this pain. It’s really comforting to have other people understand what it’s like, thank you all for your support.

i'm so sorry to hear. my love and prayers are with you.

did he show any signs or symptoms? i feel like each baby presents differently.
Thank you xx

He didn’t at all. It was only when he was having his annual check up that the vet detected a murmur. They did a blood test which indicated there was some stretching of the heart muscle so the vet referred him to a specialist clinic.

We had the appointment yesterday where they did all the scans etc. That’s when they discovered it and realised it was at an advance stage. The cardiologist said he seemed like the happiest cat and he’s extremely healthy otherwise which is what makes this diagnosis all the more difficult.

that's so much more difficult.

you know, my gollum has a grade 1/2 heart murmur, we did scans and the cardiologist said he's ok and everything seems fine, but the walls of his heart (where the left ventricle is), is a tiny bit thicker than usual - however, he says that this could just be the way his heart is (we're gonna be doing another scan next year)
but i went through the scare and the anxiety... the only thing that got me through it was knowing that i am and will continue to give him the best life i possibly can. even if does end up developing HCM in the future, i just want him to be comfortable and happy for as long as possible.

every single day, i feel, and am so aware of how grateful i am to have him, whether it be for 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, etc. every second of our time together has brought me so much love and joy.... more than anything i've ever experienced.

i hope this helps <3
