So I have posted before about my little boy. He was sick when I got him and the vet says he has herpes. He finally got better without antibiotics. He got his first shots a little over two weeks ago and was sick within 3 days. Congested breathing, coughing, discharge. Vet said it was a URI. Gave him clavomox and after 4 days I convinced them he needed something else. They gave him azuthromyacin. Well two weeks later he is sneezing out a lot if yellow snot and still breathing hard. Is this normal or should I ask for doxy? He is 5 months. He is better than he was, but still pretty sick. One more question please. Does anyone think it was due to the shots? The vet says no, but I don't agree. Thanks so much.

Sorry your baby is no feeling 100% yet. I’d ask the vet for Doxycycline most of us have found it works well as it covers a wider spectrum.

I just feel so bad for him. He has been sick all but like a week since I got him. He is due for another shot on Monday, but I am not doing it with him sick. Since he'd had no shots at all the vet went ahead with just the core including rabies and said he would just need a booster. So since he's had rabies and my other animals are vaccinated there is very little risk. But, he will be due for his neuter in like a month and want to make sure he is well for that. Just worried that he should have been much better by now, not sure how long it takes to get over it. Thank you for the advice :)

@LuvKitties positve vibes

Did you ask the vet about doxcycline antibiotic ?
Many antiobitcs don't work as well with Sphynx .
Be sure to insist NO Ketamine anesthesia for his neuter .
It can have a rebound effect on the heart if there is an underlying heart issue.
Discuss with your vet the details - if they delay the neuter until the URI is cleared up.
Ask what anesthesia - Propofol? Isloflurane ? Often used instead of ketamine.

If you are thinking of microchipping , a good time is during the neuter .
Just be sure to pay for the actual separate registration fee and give and keep updated address and phone number .

Are you seeing any improvement with the URI?

Yes I asked about Doxy, but at the time the vet said they did not carry it and it would take a couple days to order it. He was mouth breathing and not playing at the time so I wanted him on something else right away so they started Zythro. I did talk in length with the vet at his last visit about the neuter and he was clear and good with no Ketamine. He is also going to use heat pads, which for him is routine :) I am thinking of microchipping, I am actually taking both my little guys at once to get neutered. As far as improvement, yes he is better. He was mouth breathing and not playing at all. He is playing good now and doesn't seem to be mouth breathing now. I did take him in to the vet twice now just to be sure he was doing okay. The vet said his lungs are clear. But, the last 4 days he has really started sneezing out a lot of yellow discharge. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Before it was just a little nasal discharge. He has ate just fine through it all, so no trouble there.

@LuvKitties The thread I started might be helpful. My boy is 9 months and has chronic sinus issues, which started as a URI just before we got him (2 days after his 2nd round of vaccinations). The vet did not suggest antibiotics at this point - we'll be doing the tests as outlined in my thread first.

Hand reared = weaker immune system?

Chronic conditions like this can have an underlying viral cause, but secondary bacterial infections can make the symptoms very persistent, and then antibiotics can of course be needed. The link below is to a very good site, with a lot of useful information!

Chronic Nasal Disease in Cats

I hope your boy gets better soon! It sounds like he's got it pretty bad, being so congested :( We got this powder from the vet, Bisolvon, which helps loosen the mucus and makes it easier to sneeze out - that, or something similar could help by the sound of it.

Do you give him L Lysine? If he has herpes, all your cats should be on a maintainence dose. In flare ups double it. Herpes flares with stress, so the shots most likely were the underlying cause of the flare up. Neuter surgery will too. If you arent using it, I would start.
Zithro has worked pretty well when any of mine get a URI, but not as good as doxy.

Yes, I use L Lysine from the first day they come home thanks to the group :) I did talk to the vet today and they were able to give me some Doxy today. I pray this works. The vet said maybe we should check for polyps when we due neuter just to rule that out as an issue. I just hope he isn't always sick. He deserves to feel good for longer than a week. Thanks for everyones help.

Hi, thought I would check back in and have more concerns. So my kitty "Klaus" is finally doing better. He is still sick, but much better. We kept him on Zythro and added the Doxy. The vet said he doesn't think this is related to the herpes, but just a URI. I don't understand that since he was just fine until he had his shots? @Yoda mom You asked about what the vet was going to use for the anesthesia. I already told him no Ketamine. However, I took my dog for a shot today and ask more questions. He wants to use bupivicaine. He also wants to use a breathing tube and IV. I had kittens spayed/neutered in the past, but it was much simpler as it was several years ago and not sphynx kitties. I also have been reading about bupivicaine and I am really not sure about this. Has anyone has this used for spay/nueter. Thanks again for all the support.

I do not have any experience with what you have mentioned. The only one my breeder has said to avoid is Ketamine. I think we all get nervous with any anesthesia whether it is for our babies or even humans.

I would not neuter/spat any animal until they are feeling 100% just to be safer. Surgery is stressful and can weigh on the immune system so you don’t want them fighting something even harder.

I agree, we are waiting until my kitty is better before we nueter. We still have a month, per the contract, so hopefully he's 100 percent by then. I did some research on the drug and can't find anything saying it is used for anesthesia. It's used for pain. I am going to ask my vet if it's possible for him to use propofol or iso. He is not very experienced with sphynx and has always used ketamine. I don't think he has used this before so that makes me extremely nervous. I appreciate everyone's input. Don't know what I would do without this group :)

@LuvKitties ((Hugs))) is your breeder local? To ask who he/she uses for a vet ? Also I would let your breeder kmow you are doing your best by waiting until he is better before doing neuter surgery
- perhaps can ammend contract with an extension so there is no pressure and lets him be 100% before surgery ? Just a thought

I personally would ask family and friends too for vet recommemdations - perhaps a thread asking for recommendations for your area.

call their offices and ask if they have Sphynx experience ***confirm NO ketamine - ** I have them wrote no ketamine in big letters on their charts !
ask if they use isoflurane , Propofol ,
Ask if they send home with pain meds , e collar (mine never went home with a collar from neuter - they bounce back quickly too)

Ask who is actually doing the neuter - vet or tech working under vet's supervision -
I know dentals are often done by qualified experienced techs . vet then comes in to follow up.

Don't hesitate to ask lots of questions for peace of mind - go with your gut -
There is absolutely nothing wrong about changing vets - it's like humans and doctors -
You want a doc you are confident in , have a great working relationship.

I have changed vets twice. I pick up a copy of my pets chart notes for my own records -
I share with my new vet so they know the pets history .

I will share thst my awesome vet is not Sphynx specific experiemce but will go out of her way right in the office to call a colleague . I live in a small town and not a bunch of Sphynx residence . So vets may have limited experiemce with Sphynx.
That's okay as long as they are top notch and we have a great working relationship-
An example - my vet was spot on with my Yodas eye problem and the early diagnosis and correct meds on board along with eye specialist referal was a smooth diagnosis and treatment plan avoiding eye surgery .

Sorry for the long post just want you to be comfortable with the care of your baby amd offer some ideas

I personally would run from a vet that has only uses ketamine-
(Correct me , but I believe some of the other anesthesia meds are more expemsive for vets to use instead of ketamine .)

I do not want to take any chances.
* The reason behind **NO Ketamine is thatt it can have a rebound effect on the heart which can be fatal if there is an undetected underlying heart issue

Will be following closely for updates

Thanks so much. My breeder is only about an hour and half away. I have been keeping her updated. She is really easy to talk with.

I did confirm with my vet that he is the one doing the nueters. He is fine with using another anesthesia, but I am just a little scared he has not used this one before. I don't want my cats being an experiment so to speak. I am just not sure why he is not using gas normally used. Maybe the cost. I am going to follow up with him on that. I live in a really small area with hardly any options. He has always been great with my dogs, just not as experienced with spynx cats but he has been upfront with that and listens to everything I am telling him.

My kitty is finally doing much better. It's taken a month now. So happy he is playing and having fun.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions it really helps having support from people who understand :)
