I haven't been on in quite a while. Been real busy with work.
However Harold is about 1 1/2 years old now and ever since he was about 8 months old( i think) he has had a belly roll. When he sits or is laying down he looks fat!! But when he is standing or walking around he doesn't look fat and his belly doesn't hang. But when sitting he has a very large belly roll!!! Although he is by no means"obese" i don't want him getting any bigger.
Since about 8-9 months old he gets exact 1/4 cup dry kibble- nutrisca grain/ gluten free for breakfast
And for dinner he gets honest kitchen grace or prowl- 1/4 measured dry and then water added till the right consistency. He had a sensitive stomach as a baby and this combo has worked very very well for us and so im scared to change it. He is obsessed with dry kibble. We tried a no kibble diet before and he was crazy about getting to the dogs dry food.
I worked at a vet clinic for about 14 years and this seems like such a small amount for him however like i said he is putting on too much weight.
We had an obese lazy "clinic cat" who lived at the vet and he ate 1/4 cup twice a day.
So i feel like harold who is young and active should be able to eat this much easily and not be fat?
So i was wondering what your opinion is on "diet" food. Or any other ideas?
He also gets 2 lysine treats daily. And this is it! We never sneak extra treats or anything. Im very strict when it comes to my pets diets. Our dogs are all thin and healthy . And i have always been proud of the fact that none of them are overweight. Harold is our first cat and so its really thrown me a curve ball since i have not been able to fix this.
If you feed a diet kibble please share what kind/ brand and how much you feed :) thanks so much.
My husband thinks im crazy for obsessing over their weight but i want them to be as healthy as possible! And he keeps commenting on harolds belly

Let's see a pic of your boy. Sphynx are known for round bellies, you might be worrying for nothing. Also you might look for more interactive playtime with him...they think it is play, but it is exercise :) I have been known to sit on my butt and use a laser toy up and down the stairs at night...hmmm perhaps I should be walking the stairs too...lol.

Okay :) i will post a pic when i get to my computer. I cant figure out how to do it from my phone.
I hope im worrying for nothing. I will also try more exercise. He plays soo much and runs throughout the house so fast so i always assume he is getting enough exercise but maybe he isnt. He always plays with the dogs alot. I have alot of toys tho so i will for sure start that today.
Lol, i for sure could use the exercise myself as well:)
I will get a pic up soon. Thank you

My new kitten is 5 months old and has a BELLY. It is very clear compared to my almost 1 and 2 year olds. However his breeder fed him to have that roundness and he has expounded on it since coming to live with us 2 weeks ago. I can easily see Sincere (yes that's his name) looking like your kitty and to me your kitty looks muscular and healthy. Even humans when we sit get a belly and when we stand or stretch out look normal. If you watch what he consumes and he sounds like he has a active life of play. I would not worry too much. Humans all have different body structure and so do our pets everyone has genetics involved in how they form. He looks great & is beautiful. Enjoy that he is healthy. I have two that are almost a year and I think they are so lean they couldn't afford to lose a ounce and I much prefer the way Sincere looks. My one female that is 10 months eats like she is straving and is tiny skinny and long. Sincere 5 1/2 months looks healthy. Hope this helps ease your mind.

Sphynx cats tend to have chubby saggy bellys, I feed Royal canin sensitive Dry (always available, I refill as needed through the day) mixed with some science diet dental and a few greenies (for dental health) And 1 satchet of royal canin sensitive wet food a day. To keep weight down just encourage exercise, I think royal canin have low fat options too so you can have free dry food out. If your unsure about weight I found this chart. But dont worry about the belly roll :)

@farleys I don't think he looks obese. Like others mentioned they often get saggy bellies. Next vet appt ask what they feel ideal weight should be just to be safe. :).

Thanks everyone. Im so used to dogs which look and feel so different at a healthy weight. That its been hard for me to tell. I always say i think if he had hair we would think he looked fine. Lol
Thanks i have talked to my vet about it a few times. My favorite doctor who i worked with the most before i quit , she moved to china to work at animals asia and help the bears. Anyway, she has seen pics and thinks his belly roll is funny/cute. But didnt seem to think he was overweight. But she hasnt seen him in real life since he was about 6 months old.
She did remind me that harolds body and belly would never feel like the dogs . Their bodies are so different from each other so i cant expect him to feel tight and thin like the dogs lol.
Thanks everyone. I will leave his food alone and up the exercise and see if that helps a little

My little Demi has a stomach pooch. Overweight or not, some cats get the pooch. It's something that has been passed along from their ancestors. When cats fight, they kick their back feet on the on other cat's stomach and the stomach pouch is suppose to protect them these kind of attacks.

I think he looks fine! Nice and sturdy :D

But since you mentioned dry food, I know a superb brand! It's called Acana--I've seen it in specialty/boutique pet stores, but you can find it online. It's from a small producer and has amazing ingredients! It's so good that even this one veterinarian (nutritionist specialist) who hates dry food makes an exception!

Yay!! Astor loved it, and my mom's INSANELY finicky cat liked it, too!

I started with the ocean flavor and then switched to...uh, whatever they call the land animal flavor...and the clerk mentioned that the ocean flavor is more calorically dense, so I should feed more of the mammal flavor. I always just free-fed Astor (he was great at self-regulating intake), and we went through the mammal flavor much faster (though he didn't gain weight).

I second (or third!) this! My kitten started on orijen, which is a great food, but not for her. She had super stinky and mushy poos on that so I switched her to Acana grasslands formula, which is made primarily with lamb (and lamb is hypo-allergenic!) Her poos are now totally solid and smell WAY less! And she LOVES the food. I get mine online too for a fairly reasonable price.
