so I got my Eddie about a week and a half ago, and he appeared to have a respitory infection pretty badly.. sneezing up boogers all day and wheezing. His skin was very clear when I first got him. I had him seen by the vet and they decided to give him doxycycline for his infection. He has been on it for 3 days now and his skin has gotten progressively worse. It is not turning dark and spotty :((
I did switch his litter from "so fresh" to an arm and hammer brand
Please any help, tips, anything to help keep my boy healthy and happy

Thank you!!

Wow for that to happen in 3 days days is pretty severe. I would switch back to original litter and get a vet check to see if allergic to meds.

Did he get these spots in only 3 days? That are a lot of spots to show up all of the sudden. Best is to go back to the vet

@Lickleone does look the spots of the cat you recall had internal bleeding?

Not dark as hers so don’t believe it is however but similar enough that I’d go to vet ASAP to make sure it’s not the same thing

I ask what the name was of the condition perhaps to ask and rule out

See hers was darker but started a bit lighter

She’s getting me the name it may be worth asking but it is something need to be quick about though so if looks like the spots could be similar or going similar err on side of caution and be quick to go vets as it all happened quick and

Thank you all for your input!!
We are going to the vet tmrw .. I just cannot wait! We have kept up on his antibiotics and I wish I could say it has gotten better but atleast it hasn't gotten worse..
as for the papular dermatitis, do you think this could be cause because of me putting too much coconut oil on him?
That response was a lot of big words for me, but what I did get out of it was greasy skin... and I know I was putting a lot of coconut oil on him due to him being dry and flaky. That was also before he started this black looking rash

@Chelseyhhh , hugs n healing vibes
All paws crossed you get a diagnosis amd relief for sweet Eddie

I would use the same litter he was on before that he had no issues
I would ask the vet about a skin scraping to check for yeast , bacterial , fungal , possibilities .
Some kitties get yeast skin infections from certain litters
I imagine this could happen within 3 days

I would also ask the vet to rule out uticaria pigmentosa we have seen with some kitties here

A good idea to check if possible allergic to meds
Fwiw, the best antibiotic I ever used with my Sphynx had been doxycycline.
Every kitty is different so definitely worth asking about the antibiotics.

Are you giving any Holisitc supplements?
We had a kitty recemtly with severe rash
Found out allergic to CBD oil

I would try not applying coconut oil

,any of us use Hylyt shampoo - soap free hypoallergenic
I have no skin issues with just keeping it simple using Hylt shampoo with 4 Sphynx .
My vets office sells Hylt shampoo, yours may too.

Be sure not no overbath - you want the skin to do its natural thing too

The vet may give you a medicated shampoo amd perhaps different antibiotics .
Doxcycline is a great antibiotic so hoping Eddie is not allergic to it .

Did you change foods , give treats ?
I would keep his food and litter to to the same he had for the time being amd like your are domt consulting with the vet .

Will be following closely for updates

Let us know if the vet takes blood work amd or skin scraping test

Ps @Chelseyhhh one my kitties did well with medication called Baytril

Hello all!! Eddie seems to have kicked this respitory infections butt.. but still his skin is not lookin so hot. Black/brownish dots still everywhere
Just counting down the hours until we see the vet and I will have any updates

Also until then we will be going to grab him his normal kitty litter. I have no idea if this is related at all-but I thought it was weird... the kitty litter he had before was light colored and very light. Then the arm and hammer I bought is dark and not as fluffy light... ever since then it's almost like his skin has absorbed the coloring from the litter.. not sure if that is even possible but it was just a thought... I know he doesn't like the new one so we are most definitely switching it back today.

He is on a fish based diet... he eats whole hearted brand food. And I also did get him some Rachel ray nourish wet food cups... he only gets a tiny bit of it at dinner time .. is that wrong for him to have dry&wet?

Also any one else's kitty's love human food??? Sometimes he jumps on the counter and eats things ... like Anything.. I have to make sure everything is put away now lol!!

@Chelseyhhh , please keep us updated on the vet visit
And if the change of litter helps

Many of feed dry food amd wet food
Just be sure not to mix raw diet with dry kibble food

Lol yes many of us have thieves
I have to be sure too to keep my hear seekers away from hot flat stove top so if and when I cook I put the, in my bedroom till the stove top cools

Will be checking in for updates with your vets diagnosis and suggestions

Healing vibes and head smooches! He is soooo cute!

Ps mine haaaaate baths
But I have to keep toilet lid down
Go figure

So I should've also let you guys know this too as this is a big deal... my daughter has had an outbreak of what looked like hives
We took her in to the doctor and they said they weren't even sure what it was... ringworm? Flea bites? Ahhhhhh they said it HAS to do with the cat and whatever he has

@Chelseyhhh , sending healing vibes for your daughter amd Eddie
@Catzzzmeow any ideas ?

Did the doc or the vet do a test for ringworm?

Ant changes in the home - laundry detergent air fresheners , carpets cleaned , pest control applications,
Anything you can think of ?
How frustrating ..

As I child I did get ringworm from our dog - our vet treated the dog amd me !
I have seen hives from fleas - even coworkers without pets have gotten fleas bites and fleas in their home from hitch hikers coming home with them -
If one is allergic to flea bites , I understand just one bite can cause hives
I am stumped - interested to know what the doctors opinion is

What did doc diagnose? Suggest ?

Has your child grown up with pets , cats?
Any known allergies to pets?

Can you call the state university vet teaching facility ?

It's so crazy our very well respected pediatrics office said they weren't sure if it was ringworm or not...
and the vet was kind of speechless too... ah! But they gave us some monazole shampoo for eddy and a fungal medication.
For my daughter they only prescribed hotocorison, she will be going to a dermatologist tomorrow if things don't clear up

As for eddy.. two baths a day with this medication and hopefully we will see some good results soon

@Yoda mom
We did also just move into a new house about two weeks ago... so that is a big change for all of us. But eddy has only been to this house
I'm posting a picture of the first day we brought him home
He skin was perfect.. and now black dots all over and I cannot find anything about it on the internet and the vet doesn't seem to be as concerned as I am
My child has grown up with pets and we also have two dogs.. we have never seen anything like this before and my dogs seem to be okay .. at the moment... ahh it is very frustrating!

My vet will consult woth colleagues or refer me out to s specialist
I would consider a second opinion , kindly ask for a referral amd or contact a university vet hospital
(You can search by state )

Do the vet do a skin scraping to rule out yeast or bacterial infection ?

How frustrating indeed

comtinued healing vibes

Please keep us updated

How is your daughter and Eddy tonight?

I might be the doubting Thomas of the bunch, but how can a doctor not know what it is, but still say it is because of what the cat has? I’d continue with the baths, switch back to your litter and hopefully things clear up for both quickly. Please update this thread.

Was this truly diagnosed as ringworm? It doesn’t progress that fast in just a few days and does not look like hives on a person, but rather a true ring. Unfortunately I dealt with ringworm on a girl we rescued years ago and it looked very different. Was it perhaps another fungus? Ringworm on theses guys also produces scabs. Happy to hear things are clearing up.

thank you! We are so happy it has cleared up
Yes it was ringworm, my daughter and hubby had the rings and on the dogs it was very obvious
Eddy has made a full recovery, his skin is back to beautiful and he's playing around like a good little kitty should:)

So glad it is clearing up so quickly. Ugh about the humans getting it too. What a pain.
