Hi everyone, I'm new here to sphynxlair and I'm looking for advice and guidance about breeding my Sphynx cats.

I have four female Sphynx cats who are 14 months old and all registered as active. I've always been interested in breeding them responsibly. My girls have all been snap-tested for FIV, FeLV, and HCM, and the results were negative with no abnormalities detected.

I'm planning to breed and would like to know if 14 months is an appropriate age to start. I intend to breed only one girl at a time initially, to see if it's a good fit for me. I understand it's a significant amount of work and not a way to make money. My interest comes from a genuine love for the breed.

Tomorrow, I'm taking my cat to the vet for a professional opinion, but I was hoping to also get some insights and advice from others here based on personal experience. I'm not in any rush and want to make sure I do everything correctly, as my cat's health and well-being are my top priority.

Thank you for any advice and guidance ☺️✨️‍⬛️

Welcome. Have you talked to your breeder about having them be your mentor? This group isn’t really about breeding so most of us don’t have experience in it. They snap tested for HCM? @yen

@yen, welcome. glad you are doing our research to become a responsible breeder. Not for the faint of heart or easy on the wallet. There is so much involved, regular HCM scans , which is not a guarantee of eliminating any future heart issues. , etc. Some breeders also are doing DNA testing.

Glad you are taking your sphynx to the vet today for a professional opinion. You can also ask vet for a good listen to heart for any murmurs. etc. like checking joints for knees for any patella luxation., check eye lids for any ectropion, entropion etc.

Keep in mind, considerations for additional vet bills if there are complications during pregnancy, like c-section costs, etc you can ask your vet about today, including costs of wellness checks for the kittens, vaccines, neuter, spay costs of kittens.

also if you will have in your contract details about refunds, taking kittens back if there is an issue? etc, continued support to owners after purchase.

lots involved. just some of the things that come to mind.

here is a helpful link. ***Do you have a responsible breeder mentor ? perhaps reached out to who you purchased them from?
