Hello all! I have been in search of an emotional support animal and after extensive research I’ve fallen in love with Sphynx. My preference is to have an older cat and I found someone rehoming 3 hairless cats, 1 of which is a 4 year old male. They are asking $800 for a rehoming fee, he is fixed and the owner said they will provide vaccines, vet checks and the last HCM test. I’m going tomorrow to visit the cat, is there anything I should be privy to/ suspicious of/ know since I’m a (potential!) first time sphynx owner

That sounds awfully high for a rehoming fee, I would tread carefully. The norm is 250.00 to free.

$800 is on the high side for sure. I would expect half that or less. That being said, if this person is a breeder it would not surprise me if they are also trying to make a profit.

@Laurwadz , hello, checking in for updates ((hugs)).. agree it is a higher rehoming fee ... mine were $250, $450, and $600 for a 2 yr old retiree that came spayed, fully vetted, HCM scanned, registered

@Laurwadz , hello, checking in for updates ((hugs))

So I met the boy Saturday and he was genuinely the most gorgeous sweet boy I could’ve ever imagined. His skin, eyes and paws were immaculate and so was so loving and friendly. He jumped right into my boyfriend and I’s arms and snuggled with us going back and forth between him and his (current) mom. We had a long conversation with the owner and she told us the $800 was more of an insurance policy for her that if someone had $800 to rehome they were in a good financial position to give him the care he needed (I think she said something along the lines of if you can afford the $800 I know you can afford the $60+ dollar a month for his food which a lot of people are too cheap to do). She also was highly insistent on taking him to the vet before she handed him over so we had a guarantee he was healthy. She took him today and I saw all the documents from the check up confirming that he was in good health. She seemed genuinely heartbroken to be parting with him which made me sad but more trust worthy of her - I asked about the other cats and she said exactly what a user above has said, that she was rehoming the cats for THEIR benefit not hers so she wanted to make sure they would go to a home that’s best for them and I was the first person she had met she felt that about. VERY long story short, he is coming home with us tomorrow night and we couldn’t be happier

Congratulations! If you're happy and he's healthy, that is what really matters.

My last 5 cats have been rehomed or retired breeders. They have been awesome.
