it's been awhile since I've been on here and unfortunately I'm back because my baby is very sick. I'm not even sure if he is going to make it back home from the hospital.

Chicken is 8 years old and I adopted him almost two years ago. He is my buddy and literally the best pet I've ever had...I joke about how he is my third kid.

Yesterday evening he suffered an aortic thromboembolism although I though at first it was a broken leg. I didn't know about FATE until now. To cut things short, he was rushed to the vet who sent me to a specialist and he's been in the ICU since midnight last night. His echo showed severe hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The clot has occluded his right rear iliac artery. His temperature was low on admit. They said prognosis was grave.

So he is being treated with oxygen, diuretics, heart meds, anticoagulants and pain management and if he survives he will come home to see if the leg will regain perfusion.

So if anyone who has went through FATE and CHF and the kitty went on to regain most function please let me know. I am struggling with my decision to treat versus euthanize. His pain seemed controlled once we got him settled in.

I'm so scared and sad and angry. I used to say things like "he'll never die because I can't handle living without him" and I planned on 8 more years.

This can't be happening

The picture is from when I had to say goodbye and leave him this morning. I could barely drive home.

@chickensmom , ((((squeeze hugs)) thinking of you Sweetie ... My Yoda Cat was also was diagnosed with F.A.T.E. and heart problems ... I too never heard of feline arteriothrombosis episode until my girls first episode.

She bounced back at the vet from her first episode like nothing happened. I took her home with a strict baby aspirin therapy prescribed carefully in detail by my vet.
( aspirin is usually contraindicated for cats - not to be given )

I am sending all my love and prayers for both of you ...

Here for you ... Sending you a PM
Please keep me updated ... I truly understand ...
Gentle head kisses to Chicken ((((squeeze)))))

I have not had a kitty in the icu but I used to work in one (a people one). It sounds like they are doing everything they can for him. CHF can be manageable for a few years if you can make it past this hump. I'll be praying for little Chicken.

He made it through the weekend. Lungs are clear now. His leg doesn't look the greatest yet and we are monitoring it for complications.

He came home yesterday and last night he pressed his little body against me as tight as he could all night. I just kept thinking that skin to skin contact helps little babies so why not cats?

He hasn't ate since he left the vet. We are trying a different wet food. If he won't do it I will not force feed him. If he made the decision then I'll go with it, even if I don't like it.

So I am still praying like crazy and giving him as much love as I can.

Medically he is on a heart med twice a day, I believe a calcium channel blocker. Lasix twice a day and plavix daily. He is also getting pain meds up to three times a day.

I am glad he is home with you now.
Will he eat any treats? At least it would be something in his tummy. But his tummy could just be upset and could be back eating soon.
Sending healing vibes! I hope he gets better soon :) I bet he loved the cuddles

Those are good meds for him to be on. The only thing I'd like to impress upon you is how important it is for him to drink. Lasix can dehydrate fast if he isn't drinking enough.

Lair prayers keep going his way. You can try baby food beef and gravy...be sure no onion or garlic. I know you said no force feeding, but baby food is easy to syringe if you want to give it a try. Trust your gut.

@chickensmom , so glad Chicken is home snuggling with you and in the best of care.
You can also ask your vet about giving him clear unflavored pedialyte for hydration.
My vet gave me a small plunger syringe I would gently give water and clear pedialyte to the inside of the cheek while recovering. Same plunger could be used with wet foods while rehabing.
I added Nutrical supplement ( licked off my finger a few items a day ) that Chicken may like too for a little boost

He has some good medication and the bestest of love and care in your arms -
A lair full of healing vibes sent
Head smooches to Handsome Chicken
