Hi !! I am in need of advise. My poor guy has a corneal sequestrum. I took him to the eye specialist after not being able to get it better with my intervention of just eye antibiotic ointment. I am scared my guy will lose his eye. The eye doctor said it's an ulcer and a sequestrum. She wants to treat his ulcer with an antiviral and an antibiotic drop. She suggested we remove the sequestrum surgically in two weeks for $4800. That alot of money I do not have at the moment. So I am wondering if anyone has had success with curing a sequestrum/ulcer with an antiviral and antibiotics? Any suggestions? Thanks

@eeSphynx , oh, I am sorry your poor baby boy is dealing with a corneal sequestrum/ulcer. you are not alone, we are here for you. I have a post about my Yodaman's corneal sequetsrum and secondary keratosis in his eye. the drops and meds by regular vet did not work. I took him to the eye specialist. she said it may heal on it's own without surgery (she did not rush for surgery for him which I told her was not in my budget at the time). She gave him meds, and eye drops, Idoxuridine (more in my post I will tag you in) that I did everyday like clock work.

I bought the first round of meds at the eye specialist.
**the receptionist told me I could get at samsclub that sells pet meds and they would approve.

**. with samsclub Plus membership, not the regular membership, it dropped the price to 1/3 or what they sold it for at the vet. perhaps goodrx, sams, costco carries it too. I went online at goodrx and found grocery store pharmacies(winn dixie) , walgreens, cvs, etc sold some of the meds discounted too. I know personally how expensive things add up. I try to save every chance I can and always willing to share. I wrote about in the link below.

***Yodamans healed completely! no surgery needed and would never know he had an eye issue! some of the meds he had were famciclovir, *Ofloxacin, * idoxuridine, and vet I drop gel (non rx, get online). the sequestrum sloughed off

** It did take several months of drops and medications and a very strict schedule of giving the eye drops and meds. all paws crossed for healing for your boy without surgery. all paws are family, here for you.
let us know what meds he has been taking? and of course, his name? following closely for updates. other members will also chime in.

hugs n healing head smooches.

@eeSphynx , here are the before and after pics of Yoda's corneal sequestrum healed with medications. never another episode or eye issue again.
momdeeze cats healed too she said it took about 6 months with meds , see her reply in the link.

Mine have different eye issues, and Pixie has been on 4 different drops 4x daily, plus anti-inflammatory. She's had eye surgery 2 weeks ago, but the cornea was extremely damaged and while on the checkup today the cornea was a little better, it wasn't really successful. (Definitely won't be 100%)

I’m sorry that you’re having to go through this. Did you mention if you had pet insurance?
It depends on how large the sequestrum is. If small you may be able to do the drops and see how it heals. However if large enough surgery is necessary. Not all are the same.

Keep us posted on your progress
