Hello folks. I'm writing to know if anyone else has experienced something like this before. The first time I heard Osi make this weird gag-wince with a high squeak was a year ago, it happened twice when he caught a cold, or at least we thought it was a cold. He recovered from it in a few days, and we never heard it again until a few weeks ago. He wasn't sick, except for one time he ate a moth and puked several times, but I don't think that could be related to this issue.

Ever since, rarely like once every 2-5 days he will randomly make a face as if he is coughing or gagging for a second, accompanied by a sort of whistle. This usually happens after his zoomies or when he is lying on his back. I've tried googling these symptoms and searching for videos to post here so people would know how it sounds, but there are none. It feels like my cat is the only cat that knows how to squeak when coughing. It's also worth mentioning that he started waking up at night, gagging every so often.

The closest I could find was feline asthma, but he doesn't cough like cats with asthma. And wouldn't he have those coughs/gags during the daytime also if it were that? And if his throat is dry from running non stop, then wouldn't he have coughed before too?

He is very active and playful, good appetite and poop. He had his wellness check in June and our vet said his hearth is in great condition and overall he looked very well. He is also prone to heartburns, our vet is aware and she was confident to say he could manage them without any treatment in the future. Our vets usually say - if your cat eats and drinks enough, doesn't look lethargic and their poop is normal then they are healthy and appointment isn't needed. I hope I can find some information here before making another appointment.

Thanks in advance!

It can be a symptom of HCM which this breed is now known to be an issue with. I would track dates/times of the episodes just to share with vet…also their position at the time like you have noticed.

Keep us updated.

Sure…@Yana and Osiris never trying to alarm anyone, but just sharing other possibilities. Do you have pet insurance? If by chance you do, if your vet requests a scan it should be approved I hope. Some scan before any sign of issues so it is not covered.

I agree with the recommendation of a heart scan just to rule out any cardiac issues especially HCM. Also keep a log of when it happens and what occurred prior to the incident. Sometimes a video of the event will have the vet take notice of if more tests are needed.
