Dog Breeds and Sphynx

Hey trusted sphynx lovers,

Our family is keen to welcomes another a member in the form of a canine.

We are interested in hearing from anyone with a sphynx and a dog to understand the perfect pair.

In particular:

1. What breed is your dog?

2. Did you have your cat or dog first?

3. How would you describe their relationship? Why do you think this is the case?

4. Is there any other advice you can provide?

I have heard of instances where dogs have hurt cats. @Yoda mom please share your experience with the dog and cats

We have a lab mix. Mother was a lab; dad is unknown to us. She is a gentle dog. She is 7.

We just got our Sphynx in March. No issues. The cat is the boss. Dog growled once when cat tried to steal food but after getting in trouble for it, she has not done it since.

The cat though being a kitten is always jumping at her and attacking her ... and she puts up with it though. They love to play together but being one is 65 lbs and the other is 4 lbs.. I stop it once it starts to get too crazy.

But saying all that ... we would not leave them unsupervised yet together. They are together when we are sleeping but they both sleep then too... So we always have someone watch the cat or he comes with us.

Labs are easygoing dogs. My cousin has a cat and a couple of labs and the cat is the boss

We have a German shepherd who is great with cats now. When we rescued him we were told he had lived with cats and was fine with them. What we didn't realise was that he was fine with 'his' cats but not all cats. We had 3 years of stair gates so the cats could live safely upstairs and he was downstairs but eventually, with lots of slow introductions through the gate he realised that they weren't for chasing. The cats he was originally introduced to have long since passed but we're now able to introduce any cat into our household and he doesn't bat an eyelid.

Hi There!

I have a sphynx and 2 dogs. What kind of dog are you leaning towards? Sometimes looking at the breeds demeanor or traits could help determine how they will get along.

I have a pitbull, Delilah who is 11/12 yrs old and we had her prior to Agnes our sphynx. They get along, and Delilah is super gentle and tolerant. The most she does it bark at Agnes when she wants to be left alone and Agnes is biting her ear to try to play. They do like to snuggle together when sleeping or when Aggie is cold.

Otto, is a boerboel (South African mastiff) We got him after Agnes and they grew up together She was born in May and he in December the same year. They are best buddies and rough house together also. Otto, doesn't realize he is 150lbs and is quite gentle for his size. They also like to share doctors and health issues. (Aggie had allergies first then Otto and he had a heart condition first and then Agnes, so they share the same dermatologist and cardiologist, go figure)

I also foster for a local rescue. I have only had 1 dog that went after her, but in all honesty, Agnes is usually the one antagonizing the new dog. I do keep them separated until I know how the new dog will be. That also goes with introducing them to my resident dogs they are always supervised.

It all depends on the dog/cat some like companionship and some don't. I sometimes wonder how she would do with another cat though she likes to be the queen of the house.

We’ve never had dogs with the Sphynxes, but several years ago, we had 8 furry cats. One day, Bob brought home a German Shepherd “puppy” that had bonded with him on an out-of-town job. This puppy was 1.5 years old, and weighed 120 pounds. He came into the house, and immediately started to chase our 11-year-old, 6 pound Siamese girl, Tammy. She ran about 3 feet, turned around and whacked the dog across the nose hard. That was the last time he ever chased a cat. He raised two orphan kittens who thought they were dogs, and was afraid of Tammy for the rest of her life. She could keep him out of the house simply by standing in the doorway.
