My baby Lentil is under a year old and up until the last 10 days has never had any skin issues. He is now having dry skin that flakes off in large pieces sometimes. We have applied both coconut and olive oil with moderate success. It doesn’t seem itchy to him, just sensitive. We do have a vet appointment next week, I was just curious to see if anyone had seen anything like this.

@KillerVegan oh no so so sorry you’re lemtil is having skin issues
Can you think of anything that has changed ?
New detergent ? Fabric softener ? Recently sunbathing ?
Glad you have a vets appointment

Surely others will chime in too with suggestions to ask your vet

Oh wow that looks pretty rough. Sudden change usually means they are sensitive to a new product. Could be laundry detergent, perfume, who knows. Think about what he’s been around for the past couple of weeks.

Was it already this bad before you put coconut oil on it? Or did it get worse from the coconut oil?
Looks like an allergy. As others suggested try to think about what changed in food, cat products or in your home.

It definitely got worse after the coconut oil. But I was not at home when it happened. I was house sitting. After getting more information from my husband, it looks like it was sunburn, as my husband decided to leave Lentil’s coat off almost all the time, and he was sunbathing a lot. Oh dear! Lesson learned! We are using Vetericyn, and I’ll avoid coconut oil in the future, just in case. Any other suggestions?

@KillerVegan I asked because I had the same with my boy Ross. He has a dry skin and I did put coconut oil on it. Next day it was like your picture. I left his skin alone for two days and then it was much better already.
Hope it will be the same for your baby

Keep doing what you are doing! It’s obviously working and I’m sure it will take a little time to get back to normal.

aww poor guy! I would continue what you are doing as it seems to be helping and perhaps avoid the coconut oil going forward. I tried coconut oil on my girl and it made her skin worse :(
