Feeding Raw and Dry at the same time

I have two sphynx 18 months and 5 months and am feeding them both dry and raw at the same time. This came about initially through problems with my girl having really bad issues with runny poos and finding a suitable dry food for her. After much trying and numerous types I have managed to get her on about 75% dry (grain and chicken free) and some raw. Feeding her 100% raw seemed to solve her problem but this was not what I wanted to do (or recommended by my vet) - dry is not only more convenient but in my mind a more balanced food for her. When I got my kitten about a month ago I fed him on raw and kitten formula dry in the same bowl at each meal - together.
Now I have read that it is not good to feed dry and raw in the same meal - is this true and if so why, am I putting my babies in danger by doing this?

I'd appreciate views from other Sphynx mums however I live in Australia and most of the brands you use are probably not going to be available for me to purchase so if you can give me advice on if I am really doing the wrong thing, or likely to cause harm in the long term I'd really like to hear from you all!

I used to feed my crew raw food and kibbles, but the kibbles only 2-3 hours after they ate the last portion of raw food.

Feeding raw food and kibbles at the same time can cause tummy issues like diarrhea. The reason is the digestion of both foods is different.
I never heared it caused serious health issues. But I'm not a specialist of course.

I used to feed my crew raw food in the morning and in the evening. I had a food dispenser that gave kibbles at noon. This worked perfectly fine for my boys.

@lealea and @Anansi are from Australia, like several other members. So if you do want advice on brands you can always ask the Aussies here

To clarify, home made raw food may or may not be balanced, but commercial raw diets would have had to pass the approval process so they are in fact balanced.

If I'm understanding the dilemma, you are OK with feeding "some" raw food since it solves her problem. But for convenience, you want to limit the amount of raw. I would think this is a fine line to walk, but maybe it would work. Only thing I would say is if you do this, as was already recommended do separate raw and the other into different meals and let them be digested separately.

But .. is it safe to give them if they are not fed a raw diet?

@Yoda mom Ouuu time to see if the picky nakids will eat a chicken neck!

I think it would be fine for them to eat it even though they aren't raw fed. @denise irwin kitties aren't raw fed either, but her two would enjoy a chicken neck as well as chicken hearts when we fed them before.

I honestly just thaw it in the fridge and serve it to them on my silicone mat and hope they don't drag it onto the floor. Sometimes Finn doesn't want to wait and will actually start to eat it partially frozen if I leave it to thaw on the counter in a container.

I hope the nakids enjoy the chicken neck! My girl Raven rarely joins in and eats them.

LOL I don't feed chicken necks but I give them other stuff. It should be fine but will they dare to taste it......that's the question.

I think it's because my 2 girls have been exposed to so many things that basically if I put something in their dish or on their mat, they'll sniff it for like 2 seconds, lick it a couple of times, and start biting.

Henry on the other hand will sniff, not recognize it, and walk away. I was able to convince him to try chicken hearts but then to my surprise he didn't know how to eat them. I guess he's used to picking little pieces of food up with his tongue, but the chicken hearts just roll. He'd roll them until they got too far away and then he'd give up, go back for another chicken heart, and the same thing would happen. I finally have it worked out where I cut the pieces smaller and use my fingers to keep them from moving so he can pick them up.

Anyway let us know how it goes with your crew. Oh by the way, I would give it to them when they're hungry.

@Yoda mom have you attempted to give the chicken neck today? I gave each of my crew one for lunch and surprisingly Raven was the only one to eat hers, and she usually never does! The boys only had a few nibbles

Well I'm not surprised. I took a shot at giving Henry raw food just by itself when I first got him. He sniffed it, thought about it, and walked away. Honestly I can't blame them; if somebody gives me a plate of chicken liver I'd be like no way.

There was this vid on youtube testing some of the "top kibbles", including one I use for convenience, and they all didn't "sink" in the water with the vinegar test (to mimic stomach acids). The issue with mixing kibble with raw is the diff in the rate of digestibility. Got a bit of success pre-grinding kibble to fine powder and mixing it well in the raw food. I can only put about 1 tsp max or my cats won't eat as much. I only do this when I run out of supplements for the raw food or if I had put too much warm water (not hot) to warm up the raw food a bit.

I enjoyed reading your thread my two girls have normal tummy movements ( I have to be careful how I word things our Cleo is very touchy about the subject ! Nailah is just too young to care and the bagster is so proud of potty time he does a song and dance each and every time )
But the bagster really does have loose motions , he as from day one and I’ve fed same as my breeder !
I’ve now swopped to APPLAWS pure chicken breast with pumpkin . Now I’ve read some members do add pumpkin to food to help with upset tummy’s !
Now applaws is really expensive in my opinion 24 cans £34 they are only 70g cans and bagster needs 4 himself a day. ! Plus his dry food and it’s actually working and helping his tummy ..
I remember reading don’t mix raw and dry because if your nakid baby gets say food poisoning the dry food doesn’t pass through as quickly .
I am no expert by any means just a doting mum like the rest of the hoomans. On the lair

I would worry that they wouldn’t get all they needed. Applaws actually says on the container somewhere that it’s not to be used as a sole diet.
