Feline Herpes?

Good Afternoon everyone! It’s about 2 days or so of having Nyla and I really need some advice,
Before purchasing her, I was told she had zero health problems by her old owner; however on Sunday when I got her; she had a bit of a sneeze and cough alongside watery eyes. That same night she used the bathroom and had blood in her stool and it was really runny (her owner said she had a sensitive stomach but after getting medicine from the vet she had her first solid poop today) I took her to the vet the next day, they ran a variety of tests on her and she ended up on some probiotics amongst other things.

Today, after I get home I find that the skin around her eyes are scabbing and falling off, not to mention her eyes are still super watery. And she has a rash on her shoulder, I’m really worried it’s feline herpes- any advice would be greatly appreciated! I’m also really sorry about the pictures being turned on the side, I have no clue why that’s happening.

My guess is the scabbing around the eyes is from rubbing on the carrier @Riley. Were they in a carrier/cage? They often rub on the inside and it looks horrifying. Buts should clear up quickly.

Did your vet prescribe an antibiotic? If so which one ? Most do very well on Doxycycline as it covers a wider spectrum. I will recommend if the watery eyes and sneezing do not get better, ask for a respiratory PCR test. They will help narrow things down quickly. We are here for you!

For antibodies she’s also on Doxycycline, for probiotic’s she’s on Proviable-DC. I’ll ask about the PCR test!

She wasn’t in her carrier, she has free roam of the house

I mean was she in a carrier on the way home or before you picked them up. Other thing is possible if they were washed and not fully rinsed…that can cause them to turn almost crusty. Maybe they were washed before you got them and didn’t rinse well especially hard to rinse area where people rush. Armpits tummy, neck face etc. the hardest to rinse.

FYI if you do bathe them, I never wash their head/face and just use babies wipes on that area It’s great they are on Doxy. Keep us updated.

@Riley , echoing catzzzmeow replies. sharing, my Batman rubs his eye areas on the dogs bone, rug, sisal on cat tree and gets marks above his eyes , face, neck. great job on the doxy. has worked well in my experience. I have great results with proviable-DC too. is she on same food as she had before? newbies can have some loose stool especially when transitioning to a new food, takes time for their digestive system to settle. some can get a stress related URI when newly rehomed. I have all adult adoptees and once of mine had URI and cleared up with Doxy.
many of us keep on hand vetericyn spray, it's non toxic. I use on body, but not on face. I spray onto a cotton swissper round and gently dab skin. we gotcha Team Nyla! keep us updated often. hugs n head smooches

Typically those marks are from rubbing or scratching. The doxycycline should clear up any infection.

As far as herpes virus goes it mostly affects their eyes and nasal passages. It can flare up and cause eye swelling or discharge, sneezing or nasal discharge. Usually flares occur during stress events. My adopted girl Dolly has it and when she first came to my home she flared up (she had a known eye issue as well that I wanted my vet to check out and was diagnosed with this also) we got famciclovir for treatment. We haven’t had any flare ups since.

I’m sorry this is happening to you!! Awful!! I got totally screwed with a herpes cat!! I got an adorable calico sphynx “baby” a few years ago that came into my house and then suddenly she had a cold a week or two later and gave it to another young sphynx of mine who got a cold and a really bad fever for a couple days and then gave it to my elderly sphynx-who is really old and she felt awful and got covered in a rash all over her body and i thought the poor old lady was gonna die. I was freaking out and took them to the vet and had them tested for herpes and it ended up that the new cat I had gotten was positive for herpes and brought/ spread it into my household, which affected my whole house of cats!!! They all survived, but it was quite an ordeal -not to mention expensive… The stupid breeder tried to deny it and argue that it wasn’t her cat, but then gave in and sent me $1000 back for my vet bills and said she had no idea where it came from and now had to clear out her whole collection of cats that she was using for breeding. Awful!! So all 3 of my sphynx have herpes permanently now-they are not like a normal strong cats immune systems and then 1 other of my normal haired Rescue cats got it and struggles with it every other month with a little bit of discoloration around her ears and her nose and her eyes sadly. The herpes Calico Sphynx “baby” that I got from the breeder that had the herpes originally sneezes boogers every single day!! I attribute the constant snot to the herpes virus and her body just not being able to kick it or something along with something else possibly going on ?!! -that I’ve discussed with someone else on here whose cat just had major surgery to clear out the booger problem, but I don’t know.
Back then- The 2nd sick Sphynx with an awful fever passed it quickly and has been perfectly fine since then the past couple years with no issues. The old Sphynx has been ok- no major flair ups since 1st time getting herpes. Needless to say it really sucks to get a cat with herpes that doesn’t pass easily. Perhaps yours will pass the virus easily and the probiotics will help it’s system and it doesn’t have future flareups, but who knows?!! But it’s definitely very contagious and breeders can be really dishonest and cover up issues with high doses of antibiotics before you get them- I have heard. I’m sorry you’re going through this. That’s super intense that your new baby has become so sick like this!!! Sorry. Definitely not fair to you or the kitty. Get it tested for herpes:/ from my experience, there’s not much you can do for herpes except for treating the respiratory issues and letting it pass and working on their system with probiotics and lysine allegedly and there is also is an antiviral herpes med, but it did not work for us, but might be worth trying and asking for!! Sorry to ramble…

I want to thank you all for your support! I'm so sorry I couldn't answer to the questions as fast as I usually would, I was taking care of my finals and that really took a lot out of me, I should be more active now that I'm out of school though

I see what you mean now, she was in her carrier on the way home, which was like a 3-4 hour drive, everything's seems to have cleared up now; thanks for the tip about wash day, I was really worried about trying to clean her face!

she is on the same food as before, I was told she just has a really sensitive stomach, I'll look into vetericyn! She seems to be really itchy on her face and on her back a bit, do you have any recommendations for body wash? Her old owner told me to use dawn but I'm worried that might be too harsh for her skin, she broke out after I used it on her

Thank you! She has a vet check-up in two weeks, she was sneezing at first but her eyes are just super watery now, they wanted to give her eyedrops at first but I'll ask the vet about her eyes and possibly famciclovir!!

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that! That must've been terrifying! Most of her respiratory issues seemed to have gotten better since she got on probiotics! I'm leaning towards getting her tested just to be sure because her eyes are still super watery, I'm glad your babies are doing better! Shame on this breeder for not scanning their cats and kittens annually, so glad you got your money back!

I will tag you in the shampoo thread. agree, I would not use Dawn. there are some great shampoos members shared, earthbath is popular and members shared photos in the shampoo thread. be sure to rinse , rinse and rinse again. many use exfoliating gloves, helps hold slippery kitty too!

I personally use trizultra w/keto for weekly wipe downs and ear cleaning. My vet got me hooked on it for my crew over a decade ago. it is dual purpose as skin flush and ear cleaner. **** I do not flush ears, vet tech even told me not to flush cats ears.

No skin or ear issues. they don't mind it bcz it is not heavily scented like many ear cleaners. I don't use on face **, for faces a warm water wash cloth.

I wet swissper cotton pads with trizultra rectangle pads to do body wipe downs. really gets brown off underarm pits, bellies, tail etc. just dont use on face. face. the trizultra has worked great for any skin nicks and scraps too like vetericyn does.

for ears, I wet swissper cosmetic rounds and or the little square facial squares (photos attached), and qtips with trizultra . I put the qtips on top of the round and wet a little. a little head lamp helps see the nooks n crannies to clean.

ohh, thank you so much! At first I was using unscented baby wipes to wipe her down but noticed that they were breaking her out into red bumps/hives, I recently bought Koto Moda wet wipes; she doesn't break out as much but I still notice some itching & bumps on her, I didn't realize her skin would be this delicate, thank you for all of your help! Truly, theres been a lot of ups and downs with her skin amongst other things. And I'm so glad I'm not the only one whose kitty gets brown underneath their arms and neck- I thought it was a really bad dry spot at first but realized that was just oil, she has a wash day tomorrow so hopefully she'll be a bit cleaner!
