Anyone have any experience with one of these feline respiratory PCR panels? Ever since we got Gimli he has had slight chronic upper respiratory issues. Nothing serious and it’s kept under control.

Our new vet recommended one of these panels that can identify exactly what virus he may have that causes his respiratory issues. Our hope is that if we know exactly what it is, it’s possible we could do something proactively to get rid of his respiratory issue once and for all.

Just looking for any insight of the other members.

Well we got the results back for Gimli’s PCR test, good news, he tested positive for Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Our vet is going to put him on a 30 day regimen of Doxycycline and hopefully that will get rid of his chronic URI issues once and for all.

I encourage everyone if your cat has what your vet is calling a chronic URI issues, get this PCR test and find out exactly what virus and/or bacteria they may have.

So happy you did the test. We see too often people spending $ on treating what on the surface appears to be a simple URI. But once the vet starts trying a third time with a third antibiotic you kind of have to scratch your head. The money spent on a PCR test leaves out most of the head scratching and can really start treating the issue. Again kudos to you...and hoping this treatment does the trick.

Thank you, yes our old vet was convinced this was caused by a common virus and that there was really nothing that could be done except manage the symptoms.

He just always has a snotty nose, sometimes you would never know it and others he sneezes up some surprises for you, lol.

We started going to a new vet and we asked about the panel and they said yes it was certainly worth it and then you would know what’s going on. Thankfully it looks like his issue all this time was bacterial and not virus, and with the correct antibiotic we may be able to get rid of his runny nose once and for all.
