Hello everyone! I am new to this forum as well as to the sphynx ownership. I hope we can get some answers to the problems we've had lately. I apologize for posting in two different forum's topics.
We saw Ghandi at a Cat Show in Del Mar in January this year (he was almost 4 months old), and fell in love with him. I never bothered to ask the breeder why he had dark scaly spots all over him and assumed that he was either dirty, or it's his coloring. We picked him up after they got him nutered and vaccinated. According to the contract we signed with the breeder we had to take him to a vet to see if there are might be health issues with him, so that the breeder would pay for any treatment, if issues are found. The vet we went to see 2 days after we got Ghandi said that those spots are some kind of dermatological condition that needs to be treated and prescribed shampoo and conditioner. When I contacted the breeder she said that I must have used a wrong shampoo to wash him and that's how he got the problem! I never did wash him after getting him because she said not to for at least a week or two!
To cut the long story short, the vet misdiagnosed the condition. Ghandi's sports were ringworm. We found that out after my 10-year-old daughter got diagnosed by the dermatologist as having a ringworm. I took him back to another vet and now we have to wash him every 5 days with stinking sulphur. In addition, Ghandi transferred the ringworm to our other beloved cat, Zimka, and she now has bold patches on her ears and face. My roommate also got infected with the ringworm.
I am panicing and about to lose it! I am a neat freak and scrub my place all the time, but as I understand the ring worm is VERY hard to get rid of. It can be stagnant in your household for years. :Dizzy:
So, I have a couple of questions for those of you who have dealt with: 1) dishonest and uncaring breeders; 2) with the ringworm issues.
So here are the questions:
1. Is there a way to treat the ringworm in a way that it won't hurt the animal (I've been told that the oral medication will damage cat's liver), and HOW LONG does it take for it to clear up? It took 6 weeks for my child. Are there vaccines for the ringworm (like Vacderm in Europe)?
2. Are there low cost clinics or kennels (or other quarantine facilities) in California that will take cats and treat them for the duration of the condition?
3. Anyone knows of a good pet lawyer in California that will be willing to help me sue the breeder for all the expenses and costs because of their negligence towards the animals? I now spent over $2,500 on vet visits for Ghandi (all the misdiagnosed visits, tests, prescriptions for ringworm as well as round worm that he was infected with also) and Zimka (she caught a respiratory infection from Ghandi that was quite severe, and now the ringworm); also treatments for the round worm for the entire family and now medications for the ringworm.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!!!

OMG--that is terrible! I don't know of anyt such facility that will take the cat for the furation of his illness. Does your contract state that you can bring him back to the breeder? I have no experience with ringworm, thank God, so I am of no help to you as far as meds and what side effects they have--but I do know that it is very difficult to get rid of. You can check some of the vet supply sites for cleaning solutions for your home, and then I would isolate the cats to one room, disinfect the rest of your hosue and then treat the cats. With just two cats, it shouldn't be impossible. The only people I have ever heard having tons of problems are people that run catteries where the whole cattery is infected.
You can use the search function on top of every page--I searched the words ring worm and found this-- http://www.sphynxlair.com/f20/aahhh-now-ringworm-7392/ one of many that mention ring worm--this mentions something about dilute grapefruit seed extract being very effective, and also the kind of cream you use for vaginal yeast infections....check it out.
Sorry for your troubles,
Susi and the gang

You might try Naturasil all natural ringworm remedy for pets. It is around $27 and is gentle for pets over 2 months old.

Ringworms are not too difficult to eradicate. I've had experience with them and it has nothing to do with how clean your home is. I am very sorry for your family's bad (and itchy!) experiences.:Sad::Sad:

Hi & welcome to the Lair!
I'm very sorry to read of your problems and I can completely understand your anger and frustration! I don't have any experience with ringworm either but thought that Susi's idea about isolating the cats to one room makes sense. If you have the space for it you can at least stop worrying about the rest of your household and focus on getting everyone healthy.
Have you asked your vet about such a kennel or tips on legal advice? You could ask a lawyer to look at the contract but since your sphynx was misdiagnosed I might suspect your breeder to see that as a loophole... Have you asked the first vet for a refund? They were wrong after all and caused you a lot of additional costs!

I'm sorry I don't have any other advice and hope you get it all sorted out quickly!

Hello, and welcome to Sphynx Lair! This place is FULL of such useful information and everyone here is so super kind.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat and the ringworm trouble that its caused. I can only imagine the frustration and disgust you must be feeling right now.

I read your story yesterday, and today as I was checking my email I got a newsletter from a cat site I'm signed up for. Today's newsletter just happened to be on Ringworm and I immediately thought of you and your situation. I thought I would post the link to the newsletter, as it has some useful information in it.

It doesn't exactly give a solution for the problem you are having, but maybe it will help you better understand how ringworm can spread.

Anyway, best of luck. I hope you're able to get it under control, soon. And I hope you're able to find a lawyer who can help you.

I saw this cat on petfinder a few months back, Im guessing original poster got him from from a breeder and a rescue shelter got a hold of him due to his issues. He wasnt on petfinder more then a few days. The info on petfinder said he was toilet trained. I know he was in the San Diego area anyone have info about this sphynx?
