Unlike dogs, cats do NOT have a sweet tooth. Scientists believe this is due to a mutation in a key taste receptor. These receptor cells are on our tongues that send out signals to our brains every time we taste something. There are five taste sensations that humans have.
Cats’ taste buds are not like humans. They lack a major protein that regulates sweet receptors. Since they cannot detect the taste of sweetness, they are most likely just indifferent about sweet things.
Many humans swear their cats beg for ice cream, whipped cream, yogurt etc. This is because these foods contain a large amount of a protein that produces amino acids. Cats are naturally drawn to amino acid rich foods because that's one of the most vital parts of their diet. Also, many dairy products contain a high quantity of fat which is also very attractive to cats. So it is not actually the sweetness that attracts them to some of these foods.
