update on Gatsbys eye. I had adopted him 2 months ago and had noticed that he had this little fuzzy dot in his left and seems to squint more then the right. It was time to take him to the vet, then we found out he has what was called a corneal sequestrum. Now mind you this is my first pet and have never owned a cat. We set an apt to meet with ophthalmologist to see if we could get it removed. I’m very nervous about it, but something that has to be done. Although I’m sure it’s causing him pain but it definitely doesn’t stop him from being his bubbly young loving self! Will update when we finally meet with the eye doctor ♥️

@Elsie1129 , awh,,, deep breathe you got this... my adult adoptee had a corneal sequestrum I posted about her on the sphynxlair. long story short, went to regular vet, got meds, eye drops, scared the crap out of me mentioning possible surgery. he developed a secondary keratosis. I took Yoda to the opthamologist. she was great. she checked his eye, told me not to bother with a corona test can get false positive negatives, sent me home with different medications and vet I gel drops. he healed completely and looks like nothing ever wrong with his eye. the one trip to the opthamologist with meds cost less than the multiple trips to regular vet.

He may not need it removed, My Yoda's sloughed off on its own and so did another members kitty. there are several threads on corneal sequestrums. each kitty is different, I asked my vet and the opthamologist to try the conservative route first. the medications worked amazing, he started feeling better with the drops and within about 2-3 months it was completely healed no surgery. here for you with any questions... I can share medication savings tips too!

stay positive! ask me any questions, hugs n head smooches to Gatsby

@Elsie1129 , he had antibiotics and eye meds for his corneal sequestrum was Ofloxacin and Idoxuridine and vet I gel lubricating drops. the drops at the opthamologist was $90, the front desk clerk asked if I had a samsclub plus card.. she called it in to sams club. what was 90 at specialist, was $60 with regular samsclub membership, and upgraded to plus brought it down to $30! ... just an fyi.... I also check goodrx walmart for pet meds. most vets if ask nicely will call or give a handwritten RX to take with you. I always call samsclub and talk with pharmacist to look up cost of petmeds and or use goodrx usually best prices at Walmart over my local pharmacies.

do you have a pic of Gatsby's eye.? I will try to find my post showing my boys corneal sequestrum, started as a white dot and turned into an ugly large brown area. it totally sloughed off on its own ! I was very diligent with giving eye drops and meds following instructions to the letter. Momdeeze member had a kitty thats corneal sequestrum healed too.

have the opthamologist check eye lid area for any entropion or ectropion too while you are there anyways. they really did do a thorough exam and did not push a lot of test or even surgery when I took him, and it looked awful.

positive vibes for sweet Gatsby

he had an antibiotic too, here are the eye drops Yoda had for his Corneal Sequestrum and secondary keratosis

He is so lucky to have you. I really hope he doesn’t need the surgery.

Thank you for that! I’ll definitely keep everyone updated And of course here’s a picture it’s hard to capture a picture of it because it’s either squinted or the camera can’t pick it up

@Elsie1129 , when is Gatsby's appointment ? is he on meds eye drops from the regular vet?

just to share, I highly recommend getting in to the opthamologist as soon as you can for early intervention. I truly believe it made all the difference in his healing and bettering the odds of not needing surgery. ( the whole vet bill for his eye care at the speciailst with meds was $300. I called ahead to make sure they took care credit for the 6 mos promo., it's my go to with my adoptees since everything would be pre existing).

hugs n positive vibe head smooches , following closely for updates

@Elsie1129 , I can see it in the pic, yup exact same thing, vet gave him famciclivor too at one point in the treatment. too. Yoda's little brown dot got bigger quick, so definitely recommend getting him in to get early intervention . I messed around a few weeks with regular vet visits. looking back would have used the money and went straight to the opthamologist for the different meds. made a world of difference.

Gatsby is soooo cute!!!! hugs n head smooches , please keep me updated often!

I think I was most worried cause they told they were “concerned about it” and that if it’s isn’t taken care of that it could possibly bulge and rupture and that’s what scared me the most and wanted to get on top of it ASAP

because of covid I’m pushed out for May 19th unless he’s developed complications then of course earlier. And even that the 1st apt with the ophthalmologist its just a consultation

@Elsie1129 , my first appointment was just a consult too. she did a very thorough exam, chatted with me and gave me meds. never had to go back. just refilled the meds at samsclub a few times.

all paws crossed! you can ask too if they have a a cancellation call list ,, ya never know. did the regular vet start him on any eye drops? meds?

my regular vet diagnosed Yoda with a corneal sequestrum and prescribed meds till I could go to eye specialist
