We've had George for a little over a month now and after taking him to the vet for the first time(3 days after we bought him), we received a phone call that we needed to bring him back in and that he needed medicine for Giardia. I was upset over this because the breeder had given him a clean bill of health and I felt lied to. We gave him 8 days worth of medicine and we then took him back a month later to find out that it never went away! I started to blame myself thinking that possibly I wasn't disinfecting the litter-box or something. I literally clean his box after every BM and clean it with Nature's miracle Cat Litterbox cleaner once a week. He is now on a new medication and on a double dosage every day. Is there anything I can disinfect his cage with?

So sorry he still has this!
I know some will not agree with me on this one but I would use bleach to clean the litter box.
I use it and have never had A problem, just make sure you rinse it very good after cleaning it and make sure it is 100% dry before adding litter and letting George back in the box!
No germ will survive good old clorox!
I would scoop after every potty and only use A small amount of litter until he is all better and clean the box every other day with the bleach.
Hope poor George is better soon!

I dealt with this when Skinner came home. don't feel cheated by the breeder as sometimes symptoms of Giardia don't come out until they kitty is under some kind of stress so bringing him to a new home plus a vet visit is enough to stress the little guy out.
Cleaning the litter after every poop is essential as well as wiping his paws down and his bum after every single poop. i used bleach as well and is recommended to kill the giardia parasite. the parasite and the eggs can live on surfaces for quite sometime before they die. So the trick is to keep everything as clean as possible or else your kitty will continue to ingest the eggs/parasite.
It is a tricky situation but not impossible. i was lucky to have been able to stay home with Skinner until his giardia cleared up. I slept with him in a room with a litter box (so nasty) so that if he went poop in the middle of the night i got up and cleaned the poop out of the box as well as wiping all four paws and his bum. It took one 7 day cycle and one 10 day cycle on Metranidizole (sp?) and Tylosine (sp?) until they both had clear fecal smears. Now they both poop solid and are in good health. oh, if you have any other pets, cats or dogs, they all need to be treated regardless if they show signs of infestation.
Good luck!

Oh No!
What were the symptoms?
I have to leave poor little Ripley all day alone. When I come home from work, I scoop out the many clumped pees and usually one poop. But I am never there to wipe her paws down :(
I'm sure she is tracking lord knows what all over the house!!

I'm in the same boat. I keep picturing the microscopic view of the little nasty buggers, pretty disturbing.
Funny how I keep seeing these posts from new kitten owners, that and URI's. Mine has both now, like another sphynx kitten post I read here also. Are sphynx just more susceptible to these things, or have I just been lucky with my kittens in the past, I wonder...
Whatever the case, I'm pretty sure I'll be getting close to paying the receptionist's college tuition by the time I'm done.
Good luck to you George

Signs of Giardia are VERY obvious. Severe diarrhea and a churning stomach. If you put your ear to your baby's tummy (if he has giardia) you will hear the churning. There is no need to wipe bums and paws if your baby is healthy! So don't stress out! I stayed home from work because my boy was so sick and also because i have a boss who is also an animal lover and totally understood my need to take care of my baby.

ya, my boss isn't the biggest cat fan, especially bald ones, but he has a dog that is attached to his hip so he gets it. His dog Dudley comes to work with him everyday and when he's on business i have to go pick up his dog from his house and bring him to work and then home at the end of the day. all this so that dudley doesn't feel lonely at home....so i'm not the only pet crazy person in the office. Dudley is a special little guy and i love him to bits too. Last year he had some health issues and my boss and i were on the floor with Dudley doo crying and petting the little guy. It was so sad but he got better and he's back to his old self. Yes, we have a strange little office but my boss and i have been a team for 11 years now and he's great. So understanding. I had to go out of province to have brain surgery done 2 years ago and he paid all the flight and hotel expenses for me and my boyfriend. And we were there for a month. So ya, i've got a pretty good gig going on at my office. It's worth all the "your cats are kinda ugly" cracks that i get from him.

I'm a bit confused because all of George's poo has been solid...?????
