I definitely wouldn’t use a regular heating pad because they get too hot. Pet heating pads are usually only 6 or 12 watts. They do stay on continuously and are warmed more when the pet is laying on them. I got mine off of Amazon. Ellie loves it and is on it all the time if she’s not on me.
I haven't gotten my Sphynx kitty yet but I have gotten some supplies, like a heated bed! I was just like you a few weeks ago, asking around here and wondering what to do. I was initially afraid of getting a heating pad for your same reasons. Are they too hot? Are they safe?
After research and questioning, I went with a K&H heated bed Great reviews and highly recommended, they only get so hot to match the cat and can be left on continuously so you don't have to worry. I noticed too you're from the States, which is even better as they are an American brand and you can order directly and save some cash. I had to go through a second party, Amazon. I still managed to get mine on boxing week sales and saved tons of money, but not as much as if I could have ordered from them myself. They probably have some sales right now, or your local pet store might even have just the heater that you can add to bed you already have.
I got the deluxe hooded 20 inch heated cat bed. It was much bigger than I anticipated but same price as the smaller so why not? You'll have more colour options than me too cause of location.
As you can see, the entire nightstand is pretty much devoted to the cave bed. LOL.
Inside the cave bed I have an awesome heating pad (completely adjustable in terms of heat levels, and it will stay on or shut off after a certain period of time) -- Sunbeam® XpressHeat™ Heating Pad, King 2013-900-CN | Sunbeam® Canada. Around the heating pad I've put a pillow case because sometimes Max likes to burrow and I don't like the pad to be directly against his skin. On top of the pillow cased heating pad I have a plush blanket. It's very cozy.
On cooler nights, because we sleep with the window open, I drape another plush blanket over half the opening to retain the heat better. I also adjust the temperature of the heating pad each night as well, according to how cool it is in the room. I've never had Max cold or even cool. When I wake him in the morning he's always nice and toasty.
We also keep a similar set up on a stand next to my computer desk, and one next to Hubby's (we both work from home and each have our own office/room).
The bedding gets swapped out 1-2 per week. I was the cave beds themselves as needed.
I have a K&H pad as well. I have the long rectangular one that is encase in a washable foam pad with a fuzzy cover. I got it because every other pad I found (when I started looking for one here in America) has an automatic, timed shut off. No. The K&H stay on continuously, like one you would get for an outdoor doghousebed. I also have an actual heating pad that I use as well. Double wrapped in a flannel pillowcase and stuffed inside a CatSack that they refuse to get inside. Then, layers and layers of blankets piled on top, to keep them from digging too deep. They lay on top of it, till bedtime, then they start really burrowing and jostling for the “best” bed for that night. Silly girls.
