Trigger warning: sad story involving the passing of pets.
I currently have no Sphynx as mine passed away this January. His name was Leo.
Leo was a "red" (orange) sphynx that I adopted from a Kijiji ad (like craigslist) in Canada. I was living in Vancouver, BC and the people rehoming him lived about 6 hours north by car. There were already some red flags as they were VERY eager to get rid of him and said that he was 2 years old and hadn't been neutered. I had issues getting out of Vancouver (traffic to the northern communities was being restricted during covid) so they actually drove to me. I proceeded despite all the red flags fully expecting to get scammed, but I thought hey this guy needs a home either way. Surprisingly they actually showed up with the cat but he was in rough condition, extremely skinny and dirty with a torn ear and extensive scarring on his back. I got him home and scheduled a neuter and full vet exam immediately. He was an absolute disaster for the first 6 months (destructive, anxious, needed litter training) but with patience and effort he improved so much and having gone through all that together, we were inseparable.
He had HCM, a stage 4 heart murmur, and enlarged heart. We had him for another 2.5 years and spent over 8k on him in vet costs during that time. We eventually helped him cross the rainbow bridge when he developed heart failure that we treated for as long as possible but unfortunately it is incurable. He was pure love.
Leo was my 2nd sphynx, and before him I had a seal-point named Ptolemy. I also adopted him from a rehoming situation through a friend of a friend who called me up one day and asked me if I wanted a high maintenance pet. (Since I had a few other exotic pets at the time, mostly lizards!) Ptolemy was an absolute angel, he was extremely calm and loved people. He inspired my love of sphynxes that has only grown since. I adopted him when he was about 6 years old and he lived with me and my immediate family until he was 13, when he passed suddenly of a saddle thrombus. (The theme of heart fragility in these cats is well known and not lost on me here- we weren't getting yearly scans for Ptolemy but I will never make that mistake again.)
I do feel like I am ready to open up my home to a new friend (I'll make a separate post later for people to message me cattery recommendations) and although my story is at a bit of a sad place right now, I truly feel blessed to have had these cats in my life and to have shared so much love and happiness with them. I really look forward to hearing everyone's stories and seeing pictures, sharing some of my boys as well, and eventually having a new love to share with you all.
