hi everyone
I have just bought my new syphnx cat her name is Luna and she is two years old
I have been having problems with her ears since I have got her
Always shaking her head and scratching...
I have made multiple trips to the vet
Turns out she had an infection and perforated ear drum
It’s been a real tough month...
She is also sensertive to anything medical being put in her ears...

Just wanting advice really

She has had two lots of antiobiotics to kill any bacteria
And a months course of anti fungal...

When the vets cleaned her ears last week she thought the perforated eardrum was starting to fix up but she has been shaking her head ever since as I think the saline soloition aggravates her sensertive ears

The breeder has took responsibility for the vet bill but has had to stop at 1000...and my poor little nugget still isn’t completely mended

She has offered to take her back but I’m so attached to her already...
Her ears only got cleaned wed and it’s now sat and I can see Blk oil already building up...
Now we have to clean it as it seems to agitate her and if we clean it the soloition agitates her

Am at my wits end

Any advice would be really appreciated

She has allergic skin also so am having to be very careful what I feed her and put on her skin.

Welcome to the lair! :) Luna is absolutely precious and I'm sorry she's having these issues. I can't really contribute anything as I have no experience with ear problems. Do you not think the perforated ear drum has healed? Or do you think she still has a fungal infection? I know myself the ear oil can build up pretty quickly, and if the saline solution is irritating her, is it not possible to just use plsin cottonbuds to keep on top of it? Sorry, I can't be more help and I hope she gets better soon! ((BIG HUGS to you and Luna))

Yes hun
Maybe it’s just the eardrum healing
She has had two lots of antiobiotics and she is still on the anti fungal medication

She was itching still so took her too the vet and she wanted to check out the ear drum but couldn’t as she has so much black wax

However cleaning it agitated her ears

I have found some stuff in USA I’m gonna use when her eardrum is healed

It’s meant to be for sensertive ears and has aloe and coconut oil in it and nothing to agitate the ears

The breeder was going to take her back as she has been sick since I have had her

But am so attached to my little nugget
She also frantically licks her bedding and anything in site

I’m new to all this so have nothin to compare with
Hope she gets better soon
Hate asking her in so much agitation

@debbie morgan welcome to sphynxlair for you and Luna. Luna is beautiful and cute girl. Sorry to hear Luna has ear problems. It's great the breeder tries to help as much as possible.
I don't have experience wuth earproblems. Only thi g I could say is maybe look for a specialist vet?

Hello @debbie morgan and welcome to Sphynxlair! So glad you found us! Any medication your putting in her ears is going to make her uncomfortable and most likely make her shake her head. Are you still applying the meds in the ear? Also, some sphynx ears become dirty, much quicker then others. I would finish up all meds and give her a few weeks to recover and go from there, its hard to tell progress when she is still getting treatment with meds. Also, perhaps a different vets opinion might be worth while. Please enjoy the community! :)

Thanks @Toa and Ross for the tag.

Hi @debbie morgan I’m in ADELAIDE, so cant help with vets, but recently had the same problems with excess buildup in Rosie’s ears and head shaking. They would get so dirty very quickly, even though I cleaned once a week.

My vet put her on vibravet antibiotics and a course of Surolan ear ointment, which is anyifungal, antibacterial and has prednisolone which helped with inflammation. It cleared them up a treat after only a four day course. That was about three weeks ago and I haven’t had to clean her ears hardly since! Maybe ask your vet for the same. It is easy to apply, just a measured amount to each ear, then clean with a rolled up tissue so it doesn’t irritate her ears further and resist using ear buds.

I hope this helps. If you are still struggling to find a good vet, I can email mine for a recommendation in your area, if he knows of anyone.

Hi hun
I have a issue with putting things in her ears as she has a purferated ear drum at the moment

She has been on a months course of ketoconazole
Prednisolone
And amoxercillin

She even gets a reaction to saline soloition
She has the most sensertive ears it’s horrendous

It’s been going on for a month and have only had her a month

Nearly had to give her back to the breeder because I could t help her

The vets bills are 1000 dollars already!!!!:(

I bought this from USA am hoping when her ear has healed it will help

What a lovely site this is
I have been feeling very alone with this issue
Up most nights with her scratching and googling what I need to do

This has been a real comfort
X

Yeah I will finish this med and give it two weeks if she is no better will have to take her somewhere else

I’m so upset watching her shake her head like she does
The breeder has offered to take her back but I can’t bare to part with her

She seems a bit better today

This is her right now she looks happy

@debbie morgan I’m so sorry you are having so many troubles. Have you considered a soft collar for her to stop her scratching and giving her a break from all ear ointments for a week or two? Maybe just leaving them alone will help heal the perforated ear drum so you can recommence treatment for the fungal infection. What a cycle to be caught in!

Rosie also had a cortisone injection which probably helped calm things without topical treatments. My vet, Dr Mark Hill, is one of the top small animal vets in SA. I’m sure he’d be happy to do an email consult with your vet to brainstorm. I’ll message you their email address. Not sure if there would be a fee of course, but sometimes getting a second view on things can get a different perspective. You can mention in the email my cats name Rosie the sphynx- they adore her there and it might help get a better response.

Hi hun....I’m gonna a take her back to the vet on wed to look at the ear and to see if there is any improvement and to take a swab..to check there is no more yeast or bacteria...I’m gonna tell her not to wash her hair with the saline solution....she seems a lot better today...but famous last words as she has good days and bad ones.but I’m hoping she is on the mend....

A month has been a very long time....

She had a middle ear infection to star with and lost all balance..imforgot to mention that
She has had a real rough trot...

Very reluctant to put anything in her ear after the reaction she had last time...

I think this all stemmed from a food allergy ....

Hi everyone
After a month in the anti fungal and antiobiotics
And steroids
As soon as I took my little nugget off the steroids all the itching and headshaking started again

I’m beside myself

The breeder feels that the cat may need to get put down because it will cost 2-3000 to get her looked at in perth
Sadly I only got the insurence when I got her so none of this is covered

Took her back to the vets today but she has a pus pocket sitting in her ear drum
Think the other is still purferated
I’m so upset
I have cried all day
I just don’t know what else to do for her :(

Any suggestions on who I can contact for advice ?

Lair Prayers are sent your way. Do you have a university nearby that teaches veterinary medicine? Some times you can contact them and they will help treat them in order for students to learn. Doesn’t hurt to just look inquire.
