I've already been convinced that I will be getting a Sphynx. However, I'm allergic to cats, I've heard people don't have as many issues with Sphynxes, and if not I'm planning on getting allergy shots to get rid of those cat allergies for good! I just wish Sphynxes weren't so expensive! I'll just have to save tons of money and get a good one!

Sounds like A good plan!
Just A tip, try visiting some sphynx homes to see if they do bother you, it would be sure sad if you got one and could not live with it!

I am allergic to cats and it is the saliva that causes allergies.
I used to take allergy shots and always have had cats.
I have cats with fur also.
Why dont you go to a cat show and see sphynx.
I did that last year before I got my first sphynx.

ilovemysphynx had a great tip. I've had several people with cat allergies around my kitties and some of them have problems and some of them don't have any problems at all.

FYI, cats that are lighter in color tend to carry less dander, so when you do get your naked baby, opt for a light colored one!

Welcome! I was in your position about 5 months ago.. and I'm waiting for my second naked baby to come home in November!

I am also an allergy sufferer. I have found that cats with alot of hair irritate me the most.. I think it's because you don't really bathe them that often because it's harder to do and the oils just build up..

With Sphynx.. I haven't had any issues really. If I'm around one that hasn't been bathed in a long time I might feel my allergies slightly. But that's only if they get pretty oily, and it's an easy fix because you can just bathe them!

Do save up money and get one from a reputable breeder.. ( I have learned this the hard way) When it's time to think about breeders make sure to ask us if we have any thoughts- I'm sure some of us might have good suggestions :) Also, know that there are alot of rescue sphynx/ slightly older breeder kittens that are often less expensive and still really loving sweet cats. Of course you have to be even more careful with who you are buying them from.. but I know alot of members had alot of success with this method of adoption too!

Hope to see you around! Ask away with any questions :)

I didn't even think about going to a cat show to see a Sphynx! That's a great idea! I don't know anyone who has a Sphynx, so I wouldn't be able to visit a Sphynx home. Also do cats with lighter colors really have less dander? I really wanted a blue or black sphynx, but maybe I can get a spotted one, or multicolored, because I like the darker colors better than the lighter colors.

Another thing that I've heard are that Sphynxes are very high maintenence cats. Aside from more frequent bathing and washing their ears more often, is there really anything else that a Sphynx cat needs that a regular cat wouldnt?

Welcome to our little piece of the world. We will bring you over to the other side soon enough..lol You might want to check breeder sites for retired breeders. They are all adults of course, but priced reasonably.

Thanks so much for all the info!!! I'm definitely going to look into a bunch of different options. I think Sphynxes are adorable, and I wouldn't pick any other kind of cat!
