We adopted Marceline last June, she will be two in July, she’s an extremely active kitty and full of playful and adventurous spirit. When she walks slowly her back legs/back sometimes do what the video shows. The video is an example of the most extreme movement, it’s usually much more subtle and had us wondering if we were seeing something. (She almost always runs everywhere so slow walking isn’t how she moves a majority of the time). This started early last week. We have her follow up vet appointment next week, but are worried. Her energy level is still high, her balance is great, no pain (that we can tell) to touch or with climbing or jumping, she usually runs everywhere and she’s still running perfectly fine, jumps, plays as she normally would, shows no pain. Her bowel movements are regular, she spayed. She’s eating and drinking normally. She’s strictly and indoor cat, up to date on all shots/vaccines and preventive care. Any idea what could be going on?

It could be luxtation of the hips which can require surgery.

Usually they don’t want to bare weight on it with dislocation or breakage… because she doesn’t do it all the time they kind of ruled that out, but when we go back it will more than likely need to be ruled out with X-rays.

We’re also concerned about feline aortic thromboembolism (FATE). I’m going to ask them to test for that as well.

I was thinking it could be the luxating of the patella's. But after looking up FATE, I would be concerned for that also. Best recommendation would be a vet visit to rule out anything.

Can you show the video to the vet?
Does she show sign of pain when you touch her back and hind legs?

We have, they think it’s odd- running tests/scans and X-rays this week.
She is in no pain at all. Runs and plays all day but when she walks she walks like this, most of the time it’s subtle but this is the most extreme (dipping when she walks).

Good to hear they will do scans and x-rays. It's strange cause she's not always doing it. Hope the scans give you some answers. Please keep us updated

Yesterday she looked like she was getting worse so I took her to an Emergency vet. They’re thinking she’s got muscle spasms and we’ve been sent home with muscle relaxers, pain meds and an anti-inflammatory. In four days if there isn’t improvement than we will have to have more intensive diagnostics done. But right now she’s comfortable and I’m hoping for improvement today.

@Marcelines Mom , sending much love hugs n positive vibes for the test results... please keep us updated. here for you.

to share, experienced with kitties and luxating patella and sadly F.A.T.E. too.

my girl had several fate episodes in her lifetime.. I did learn for her subtle signs she would stretch out her rear leg and give a shake like litter stuck and grouch low sometimes a gutteral aweful cry out. other times just the subtle changes.

my vet did give me a strict baby aspirin therapy intervention based on her weight. you may have read researching it you can ask vet about to have on hand if needed** its an emergency protocol as aspirin usually contraindicated.
it helped my girl numerous times on her various degrees of f.a.t.e episodes.
is it a constant or does it go away? Yoda would bounce back quickly like nothing happened.

with my other kitty knee patella would stretch out rear leg for a few seconds in the air as if to pop it back in place, no crying no different acting and then go about his business playing as usual. vet checked and no surgery for him. he lived 17 yrs with the minor patella luxation

the knee patella luxation kitty I took down the smart cat climber and made adjustments to cat tree locations. I have a tall bed and put a raised wicker bed and extra padding so can use as a place to jump down.. ironically they all use it daily .

following closely for updates.

X-rays are back and there is absolutely nothing wrong with her skeletal system, her spine, hips legs and tail “are the picture of health”. Now we wait a week to see if the pain meds help kickstart her to walking normal. If she doesn’t we will head to another ortho consult, hoping to rule out Paroxysmal Dyskinesia.
