I just wanted to share with you all of what I am going through. I had my horse at this mans place until today.
The pictures I am going to share with you are of just two of his horses.

October 11, 2010 | Facebook

I have the details of what im trying to get done in the comments sections. But it boils down to this.
I called the sheriff's office today. They said the following steps would be taken.
1. A sheriff would go out there and take pictures for evidence.
2. The pictures would be sent to the state Vets.
3. The vet would make a recommendation.
4. The owners would be notified of that recommendation, and given x amount of time to do as told.
5. When the sheriff follows up on the case, if nothing is done, then the states attorney will be notified.
6. Then everything will be up to the states attorney as to what they are going to do about it.

This filly I took pictures of wont make it after it starts snowing. I am at a loss of what to do for these poor souls.

Well you are off to a good start and you have done all you can do. The horses are in dire need of a specialist to step in. Animal care and rescue in that area will probably prioritize this and get someone out there as soon as possible. They will probably do a seizure right away.

Again you have the ball rolling and I commend you for turning them in. It IS hard to look at.:Cry::Cry:

I'm so sad for those poor horses that are stuck there!! It boils my blood that people can treat an animal like that! grrrrrrrrr:Angry:

I have no idea how it works reporting someone of animal abuse/neglect, but can you also contact the SPCA or do you have to go through the Sheriff's office? My only frame of reference is the TV show "Animal Cops" but it seems like the SPCA acts much faster than what you described the Sheriff's office is going to do!

We dont have an ASPCA in our area. I e-mailed 2 local tv stations. The humane society's hands are tied. They have no jurisdiction:ThumbsDown:.

Raise hell. I would be calling ALL shelters in your city, all vets, post pictures everywhere you can. Good thing I am not there because that horse would no longer be on that property. I have in the past "removed" animals from places that were being neglected. Illegal yes, but I have never gotten in trouble not one time did the abused animals owner turn me in and then bring attention to the neglect.

E-mailing may not be as effective as talking with someone on the phone. You are super to try to get the media involved. Now call the newspapers. Call the city. Keep calling and shouting until you get what is needed.:ThumbsUp::ThumbsUp:

We only have one shelter, 2 local tv stations, and 1 news paper. I have come down with a cold bug and feel achy all over. But when I am able to talk I will start calling. I doubt our dinky lil politically run news paper will do anything about it tho. If I had land, the poor filly would no longer be where she is now. But I have no where to put her. I would only be able to keep her in my back yard till someone called on me.

OMG! That is so sad, how people can let animals get so emaciated is absolutely beyond me. I just watched something almost identical on Animal Cops yesterday. The hooves looked just like that, and what they had to do to fix it was heartbreaking. If I lived even in the US I would pay a visit to that man and beat him with horse husbandry tools.

Hope everything turns out well, and I hope he gets criminally charged with animal abuse and neglect. Good for you for making it so public.

Almost identical to a Animal Cops episode that took place in Texas, I hope they are able to save these horses and give them the life they deserve!

Update: The sick filly was shot last night. The owners wouldnt give her up or sell her. They shot her instead. When Monday comes, calls will be flooding into the States Attorneys office about all of this. The punishment for animal abuse/neglect in the state of North Dakota is a 2,000 dollar fine, or up to a year in jail. Im sure the old man will die before he is punished (He's 80 years old). There is no one who can step in.. the only way a person can get anything done is to physically go up there and steal the horse. But I can not, considering I have no where to put them. So we all wait for the creaky, old, dusty, bias wheels of justice to start turning. *Sigh*

Not a good situation for the horses and owners. The suffering is so sad and could have been prevented. Don't know the owners story, but in most cases they can't afford the horses and/or they are uneducated. Sorry you are going through this. It is hard when you have a tender heart.

I know someone who has stolen a neglected horse. not a word was ever said about it even when she ran into someone else. I hope someone can do the same for these poor souls

That is such a sad story for the filly who was shot. How can someone be so selfish to not reach out for help even if it was because of financial strain or not knowing what to do. I will never understand.
I've always been an avid animal lover and if at anytime I ever had a pet that I couldn't take care of I would find someone who could. Thats the responsible thing to do!

Melonie, Did you ever read "Stealing Love: Confessions of a Dog Napper"? Great book... you just reminded me of the author!! LOL

I'm in no way trying to justify what this man did. But he's 80 years old, isn't it conceivable that he isn't mentally capable of caring for the animals? I wonder if anyone has been inside his house to see what it's like, or if he can even care for himself?
