So we've had a long 24 hours for our household.

To allay any immediate panic, our boy is stable and at the vet hospital for investigation.

Last night, around 11:30, as we were getting ready for bed, our 2 year old sphynx jumped/fell from the end of our bed. He's a bit of a klutz, so we didn't immediately panic.

...Until when my partner went to check on him and he was totally limp and let out the longest yowl I've ever heard from him. He seemed alert the whole time, regained his motor function in the 60 seconds it took us to panic dress, and we're pretty sure our panic scared him.

Corralled him into his carrier, both of us terrified, as he was not making any sound or licking our fingers when we put them in front of him (kind of a habit of his).

He was alert and attentive the whole time we were out, but that wasn't going to convince us nothing was wrong.

The first clinic didn't notice any injuries or wounds (thank goodness!), but they did pick up a slight arrhythmia when listening to his heart. His usual vet has never mentioned anything along those lines, so we were obviously concerned for him.

We ended up at 2 other emergency clinics to try and find a cardiologist or get booked with one. Overall, we had 4 clinic staff confirm he was showing the arrhythmia, and ended up begrudgingly leaving him at the third clinic in hopes their cardiologist could fit him in for a cardiac workup.

Received word at 9 am that his blood work was being processed and they could do the workup for him today. It's now 1:30 pm, and my partner called to check in a few minutes ago.

Apparently our little man hasn't eaten (he's picky and very likely stressing, so we're not surprised, but he does have some of his wet food with him for them to try). He's also not super fond of the other cats in the vet kennels, and was given some Gravol to settle him down.

Legitimately, this was kind of encouraging for me, as last night he was quite low energy. So it sounds like he's perked up a bit.

The waiting is utterly brutal, neither of us has slept much and we miss our little gremlin boy like crazy (even though it's literally only been 10 hours).

We're bracing for the potential of a more serious heart problem, the breed being pretty prone to them. Hopefully we've caught whatever this is early enough to take some preventative measures.

Fingers crossed he can come home today and we get some answers. The not knowing is agony.

@SardonicSilence , oh my heart, hugs and positive vibe head smooches. you, yours and your boy certainly having some stress times over past 24 hours.

not to alarm but to share my experience with my first sphynx, scared the H*ll out of me. , I would ask vet to rule out whether his falling off bed and the longest yowl and regained motor function in 60 seconds was possible a clot incident that passed.
My first sphynx had them., sounded similiar .
she would low walk, do a gutteral yowl , and cooler to the touch, sometimes lost her bowls, other times not, then got up in a minute or so and was acting fine again.

glad you are having a cardio check and to see if a treatment plan or medications going forward would be indicated. just like you said :
Hopefully we've caught whatever this is early enough to take some preventative measures.

deep breaths, you got this, here for you. glad he is stable, hope you get test results soon, (I know the agony of the wait) and he can come home tonight.
following closely for updates. stay strong baby boy!

Short update!

We got the best possible news late last night.

Yes, he has arrhythmia, we can handle that as need arises.

-No heart structure issues
-Bloodwork came back perfect
-He’s been eating and drinking
-The entire clinic adores him

We’re thrilled he’s home. We’ll be doing a harness monitor session for him in the coming weeks to see if his normal day to day leads to anything concerning.

For now we’re massively relieved and have been holding our little gremlin close.

Thanks so much for the support and care! Will keep posting if other conclusions arise.

Yep! This is Mister Nox!

Thanks so much for your supportive words, they really made things easier to work through.

He’s back to his usual self this morning. Many cuddle demands, treat begging aplenty, and tons of purrs and love.

I couldn’t be more grateful for the medical staff. They were amazing and took excellent care of Nox.

He was apparently quite loved by the clinic staff, who commented that he was the best condition they’ve ever seen a sphynx in. (We are blessed that he has no skin issues, he’s portion controlled, and is very bright and inquisitive)

@Catzzzmeow Thank you! We couldn’t be more pleased with this outcome. He’s our only pet and we have no kids, so he’s incredibly spoiled and loved.

Additional update!

This past Monday, he was fitted with a wearable heart monitor to do a 24 hour study. I had to track significant activities during the period so they’d know what he was up to if his heart rate rose or fell.

He isn’t a ‘clothes’ boy at the best of times, and he was not happy to be a temporary cyborg.

We’re waiting on results now, which should tell us if he needs meds to keep an eye on his ticker.

Pic of him in the monitor. He was not amused. So much side eye.

We were very lucky he didn’t have an allergic reaction to the monitor adhesive. He does have a couple odd paler patches, but I think it stripped what minor fuzz he had in those spots.

You can see them as triangular patches on his back.

Updates!

Nox's first halter-monitor session results came in a couple of weeks ago. His arrhythmia impacts about 8% of heartbeats (7% in upper chambers, 1% in lower chambers). His pulse skips single beats mostly, but he had a few instances of couplets (2 skipped at once) and one triplet (3 missed in a row, more concerning).

The cardiologist recommended putting the boy on Sotalol, which is meant to regulate his pulse. He's been on it since the day after we found out, so about 2 weeks ago. Twice a day he gets a squirt of liquid meds (followed by Churus, of course), and we completed a second 24 hour heart monitor session this week.

We should hear back about whether or not the meds are working/need tweaked in a couple more weeks. Fingers crossed it's working like it should.

He's been just as energetic and silly as ever, which we see as encouraging. Heck, he's actually seen an energy spike since starting meds, more zoomies. No complaints, I love him being this charged up.

Thanks for the supportive comments, all. Nox appreciates having 'fans'.
