Shiva Dancing: Was the name of a band in the mid 80s. I never heard them. The name just stuck with us. They always played against the band we worked with.
We were sitting in Baskin Robin with a picture of our baby...trying to come up with a name and that was just. it.

Neon Shadow Cat: He has a song to the tune of Secret Agent Man. It was the first and only name I thought of when I saw him... I added his nickname "Fleshy" after the Monty comic Sphynx.... Oh and Neon LOVES his name!!

Venus Bela Star: She was sush a pretty kitty she needed a name to match... Venus after the Godess of Love. Bela means beautiful and Star.... It was inspired by this poem.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies

One shade the more, one ray the less
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress
Or softly lightens o'er her face
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent
The smiles that win, the tints that glow
But tell of days in goodness spent
A mind at peace with all below
A heart whose love is innocent

My nieces picked Pedda's name, they named her Gepetta after seeing Pinocchio. I just modified it to make it easier to say.

My first sphynx was named Streak. No explenation needed there I guess.

Darwin is a double reason.
1. as a joke since he would've never stood a chance to survive evolution.

2. As a proof of evolution as a concept.

I can't stand hard core creationists. If they are soft cores saying they believe someone put it all in motion I can at least accept it but to deny anything is older than 6000 years and everything was created as it is today, well

A bit over the top to refuse to accept carbon 14 dating and then the next second light a bulb at home using nuclear generated electricity.

Since Teeka was 2 years old when I got her, she was already named, and I didn't have the heart to change it since she responded so well to it.

But I've given her about a million nicknames in order to 'put my stamp' on her. Her favourites are: Teeka-boo, Teeka-bean, The Teekinator, Monkeypants, and Mama's baby girl. :)

1. Mahmoody Blue is my first boy--I wanted an arabic sounding name and liked the name Mahmoody from the book, "Not Without My Daughter" and I liked the Moody Blues and Moody is a blue/white bi-color Van--so Mahmoody Blue it was! I just call him Moody though,
2. Habibi is my first girl--it is arabic for sweetheart. It fits her perfectly--no sweeter cat exists on this Earth.
3. Othie Marie was born on my mom's birthday and my Mom's name was Othela and we playfully called her Othie. And we call everybody whatever their first names are but add Marie as their second one.
4. Dulcinea was named after Don Quixote's lady love, Dulcinea.
5. Knightsrealm Sir Booberry (Boo for short) arrived on Halloween, so he needed a seasonal yet sophisticated name.
6. Little Lulu was named Shania when I got her, but I changed it to Lulu--Little Lulu was a favorite comic book of mine when I was a little girl.

Snuffie's full name is Snuffulupagus as in the hair mammoth from Sesame Street. She didn't find me until she was nearly 8 mths old and I couldn't find a better name to fit her so she kept the name that my Breeders grandson gave her. It totally fits her. lol

SoBe was originally thought to be a boy and we were going to name "him" Stitch,,however, we found out about a week later that she was actually a girl so we said "So be it" because we were already in love with her. So her name is Great White SoBe since her skin is the same color as a great white shark! lol Yes she is just as vicious! lol

It took quite a while for us to name our boy. He was a rescue, and had been originally named "Piggy," then called "Spike" by his foster mom.

As soon as we brought him home, I started calling him my angel, while waiting to choose a name. I posted a "name my cat" contest on Facebook, hoping for some good suggestions. Only a few people took it seriously, but we did get two cute results: Skynrd and Yoda.

I couldn't get the concept of him being my angel out of my head. So, I started thinking of "angel" names. Michael didn't fit. Raphael reminded me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So, I did a little research.

I love the name Gabriel, plus it just seems to "fit." We added more, because I did like the suggestions from my Facebook friends, so his full name is:

Gabriel Skynrd the Jedi Ninja

Also known as Gabe, Gabey, Baby Gabey, Ninja (but you have to pronounce it long and drawn out, like "neeeeeenjaaaaahh"), The Purrminator, Dude-ist, the nudist, and many, many more.

When I first decided I wanted a sphynx, I was declaring to all I shall have a sphynx and his name shall be Smeagol
Its kinda obvious why Smeagol... Gollum was just too obvious!!! Plus he is my precious!

Also, Smegol had a good side and a bad side.. the good side was slinker and the bad side was stinker.. all too appropriate for those stinky sphynxy farts!!:LOL:

When I saw a couple pics of my blue and white lil guy I immediately thought Baxter would fit him. Come to find out it was his Breeders fathers name. Soooo with that thought it was appropriate to keep the name. All though I put a twist in it and he is now RamBax Mirez, (Ramirez is my married name.)

My other lil guy was a bit of a struggle. I got so many suggestions and ideas nothing fit until my cousin suggested he looks like Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars. So I googled it and new it would be his name. His also has a swist in it. And is now Jar Jar Kinks. he has a small kink at the tip of his tail so thought that fit his bill. Like how it rhymes with Sphynx too.

Happy naming everyone!!!!

I picked "Twiggy," after the 1960's super model, because everyone kept teasing me about how "weird looking" sphynx were (irritating!) and I thought she might need a self esteem boost (plus I thought she was beautiful).

"Pork Chop" got his name after I showed a picture of him (before he came home) to a friend and she said that he just looked like a "Pork Chop"...it stuck and that's been his name ever since.

Our first Sphynx Gollum's full name was My Precious Gollum, because he was my birthday present.

Our second boy Tanker was named Tanker Toy by the breeder because he steam rolled over his siblings at meal time. Ironically we were supposed to get his sister "Faye" but she was killed accidentally so the breeder offered us Tanker.

Our third was a retired breeder named My Zulish Pleasure that we called Zulie.

Zulie and Gollum both passed away at the age of 11 in 2001 and 2002. Tanker died in 2008 at the ripe age of 16 1/2. I missed the breed terribly but never thought I would own a Sphynx again. Then one of those "once in a lifetime" opportunities fell into my lap.

So my fourth Sphynx boy is my Joyful Gleek, because owning a Sphynx again made my heart bust with joy. I also enjoy the tv show Glee and couldn't help but think my blue and white boy looked like he was covered in blue slushy, not to mention he has a "L" across the top of his nose.

I really love old monster movies. Particularly those with vampires and Frankenstein. And Sophie, my Shih Tzu's, full name is "Micah's Lil Sophie Monster", so I wanted to stick to the theme. After saying a ton of different name combinations out loud, I settled on "Nofur Frankenstein" and we're going to call him Frankie. And Frankie works well because both my husband and I are Frank Sinatra fans. And 10 days till I get my boy too!

Abby is the name of my dog who passed away when I was 12. She was my best friend and so knowing my bald baby would be my bestfriend and in honor of Abby the dog Abigale it was.
Her middle name is Lee...that is my middle name and it runs in the family.

I tend to like unusual names (and things, thence my sphynx!). Anywho, I thought about it for days, compiled a list, asked friends for opinions (it was before a discovered the lair, of course!), and narrowed the list down. Then, I got my boy, and the way he'd run through the house and his crazy spurts of excitement where he'd run like a crazy man...and those ears, those HUGE ears on his tiny 14.5 week face! Jack, well, it just came out...reminded me of a jack rabit, and it just stuck!

will start with my non sphynx.
Coco R.I.P. my sister named.
She was black and white with siamese in her.
In the light she was reddish brown so the name fits her.
Meeko I wanted something asian sounding.
I thought of Neko but many cats are named that so I came up with Meeko.
Sasha looks like her Russian Blue mom so I wanted something Russian.
Her name was Shady before I had her.
Oreo is Black and White so I named her Oreo Cookie Monster.
Now my Sphynxs.
I had names picked for my first sphynx.
It was going to be Cleopatra for a girl and Ramses for a boy.
I used the Cleopatra part for Cleo but could not come up with a show
The Bengal breeder who is friends with Cleos breeder came up with the Egyptian Queen part so her name is Cleopatra Egyptian Queen.
Wrinkles I was thinking of naming Velvet Wrinkles but this Abby breeder suggested Wrinkled Velvet so that is her name.
Wrinkles comes from sphynx being wrinkles and the velvet part is because they feel like velvet.
Polar Bare I named.
My friend shows American Bob tails and a few are named Polar.
I like the name Polar so I used it.
Bare is because he is Bare.
Polar is because he is white.
His show name is Mystic Polar Bare.
I considered these names also.
Lady Godiva

White Linen
Spring Snowstorm
Yes Its All About Me

Razzle Dazzle
Arctic Blue Eyez

Na Wahine Ke Koa
My Bombay is Kona because she is black.
The name came from Kona,Hawaii and Kona Coffee.
Her show name is Kona Black Magik if it is not rgistered in TICA.

Naming Berlin was pretty tricky. I didn't want to give her a typical 'pet' name, but finding a human name to fit her was not all that easy either, so I ended up going geographical, haha. I was doing German lessons (my mom's side of the family is German, so I'm getting in touch with my roots) at the time that I was thinking about names and that's when I got the idea to name her Berlin. The moment it came to me I just knew, 'This is it'. I practice my German on her now, which makes it even more appropriate. With any luck, she'll be bilingual before long

Gulliver of Greyskull... He got his name because while pondering the question at work I thought Gulliver was a cute name, then later that day without me saying anything my husband said "what about Gulliver for a name?" So that was a no brainer.

Bacon... Well, my husband saw his picture and said he looks like a little piggy, how about naming him Bacon... That quickly evolved to Sir Francis Bacon, after the English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author.

Such creative, intelligent, and heart warming originations for names!

Makes my Chiefy's name seem pretty pedestrian :) His AKC name was Monroe's Sweet Lil KC Chief (he was red, we were living in MO at the time and we're huge sports fans) so voila, Chief. I frequently called him "muffin", "muffin man", "angel", "little man", and our "little guy". Not a day goes by that I don't miss him dearly :(

Anyway, for our sphynx, we've settled on Milagro (spanish for miracle) for our new little one, who we are anxiously expecting - we will call him Milo - I'm sure hubby will pronounce it "my-low" and I'll probably vacillate between that and "mee-low", and of course all of the usual nicknames that develop over time.

My first Sphnyx was named Walter. We named him that because he looked like an old man and I love human names!

My current Sphynx have the names that came with them. Johnny is John F. Kenudie Jr (his breeder names hers after famous people) and I loved it so I kept the name.
Diego used to be named Tonka when he was at his breeder because of the crazy way he digs in the litter box :Dizzy:. His old mom named him Diego I think from the ice age movie. I have a hard time changing their names when they are used to the name that they are given.

Magia-Prieta Ness C.
She got her LONG name (it's longer than that but I don't want to put both of her last names on the internet)
from several diferent things, the explanation for it is LONG too.

She was a rescue but we changed her name since she didn't know the old one anyway.
Magia means Magic, I chose that because my finding her was a magical-like accident, I just happened across an online post while looking for sphynx pictures saying that this sphynx needed rehomeing and fast. That worked well for us, because of circumstance, we were able to afford her. I had an adult sphynx reserved, the breeder had said she'd hold him untill we got the rest of the money 2 weeks later. A week later the breeder started pestering me for money and then sold the cat out from under me when I told her I wouldn't have it for another week, which had been our agreement. Well, a week alater we had the money but no kitty. That night I was online, kinda pouting about everything, and found my baby. Magical!

The Prieta part is because of her birthday(Oct 17th), which happens to be the anniversry of Loma Prieta, the massive earthquake of '89 that tore up San Fransisco. I was in that earthquake. Prieta means dark.
She her first name in whole means Dark Magic.

The Ness part comes from the name of the artist that drew my fiance's favorite kid's book, The Truthful Harp.

Very cool explanation! Glad you made it through the earthquake to become a part of SL and a wonderful parent to Magi!!!

I was in that quake too....where were you? After the quake my employer discovered how much I knew about them and let me advise on making their other employees building safer.
My room mate was driving when it happened and had no idea. I was in Union City (near the East Bay end of the BART line) in a warehouse. It was intense...I found this perfectly safe spot and stood there feeling the wall patting my back while the room rock and rolled. Right as it ended my room mate shows up.
She was preoccupied and said something about going to the store. I said "ALice we have to get home...we just had a major quake". She didn't believe me!" She said something was wrong with her steering... Then she said the thing that confirmed it was bad without realizing.. she reached for the radio and flipped the channels...and said "and the radio is dead." I'm sitting going OMG the radio is dead...for that to happen it had to be real bad. She insisted on stopping at the store where from the amount of stuff on the floor she decided I was right about the quake.
Oh and one of our cats had managed to close herself in the bathroom in the dark...poor thing watered the entire room.

We had a cat that predicted them... I'll post about her in a non sphynx section sometime
