Thought I would share a bit about Martooni’s spay and will update with pics so future members will know what to expect etc.

I dropped her off bright and early and reminded them again not to use Ketamine as the anesthesia (even thought they had already said they do not use it). I had her in a sweater and brought the more flexible cone I wanted them to use after surgery. Our veterinary hospital has you fill out a consent form which included do you want them chipped and do you want pre-blood work done. I always say yes to bloodwork. It is a great road map for your vet and a good time to start with a baseline.

The vet called a short time later and said Martooni was waking up from her operation and it went very well. Then said unfortunately he doesn’t think she will be coming home today. My heart dropped and my brain raced…he said he thinks his vet tech is going to steal her and let out a big laugh. Turns out the tech carried her around in her jacket every chance she could and fell in love with her.

Here are some things I was told upon her discharge:

The tech shared some are groggy and some crazy after surgery. Some will eat and some will not until the next day. She shared they are given fluids during surgery so I shouldn’t worry if she doesn’t drink, but she will probably pee more than usual being as she is well hydrated. If she vomits once don’t worry…more than once contact them. If anything looks swollen or severely bruised email them pics or come back. She did say bruising is normal but if it starts to bubble/pool in one area it is worth a re-check. She was sent home with pain meds…one tablet every morning. Stitches will dissolve and said not let her lick stitches and limit her activity for 7-10 days…and wished me luck LOL.

She did say when I get home to cut off the bandage where the catheter was placed. She did say she has a very puffy paw from laying on it and showed me. Thank goodness she did or I would have freaked. She said just cut the bandage and massage the paw it will go down fast. She said it happens quite often but looks worse on her because she is hairless.

So here are some pics of the paw when we got home, and what it looked like an hour later as well as her incision site today.

Will update with pics in a couple of days hoping she heals with no issues.

Glad everything went well! Sending hugs and a speedy recovery to Martooni. I could not keep Nabi from jumping and running around but she hasn't licked the area and it is healing well so far.

@Annejo12 thank you…that is such compliment having you ask that question. It would not be for me though. I just adore this breed and hope to do right by educating others about it and I think that is where my place is meant to be. If I ever did want to become a breeder you can bet I would strive to be the best.

And so you would be the best !!! You are the best, most knowledgeable mommy imaginable. It is hard to believe she is old enough to spay. Seems like yesterday we were waiting for her to be old enough to come home. The surgery was laparoscopic, correct?

I don’t believe so. Usually with laparoscopic there are 2 areas of entry I believe. She has just one incision from what I see. Jouët had x’s for sutures…Azura had a longer incision than Martooni’s.

I know it feels like yesterday she was born…but our contract states 5 pounds or 6 months do she had hit the 5 pound mark when we set up the appt. The brother of Martooni was spayed a little over a week ago and he weighed more than her. It’s nice to have contact with a sibling’s parent.

Your baby is growing up! When Foxy kitten was spayed nearly 2 years ago, we couldn't keep a cone on her, couldn't keep her quiet, couldn't give any meds and couldn't even look at her incision, unless we caught her asleep. When we called the vet with these concerns, he just laughed, agreed that this happens with feral and semi-feral cats, and told us to try to look at the incision at least once a day. She was fine. Miss Martooni, on the other hand, will probably proudly show you her incision!

My boy's paw was also badly swollen, I think the bandage they apply is too tight so when Osi tried to rip it off I removed it immediately. I was told they tend to get sick after surgery so you should abstain from feeding them right after the procedure, but our cat was thirsty and hungry and didn't puke. He also warned us if we put a cone of shame on him he would leave home :D Here in Germany vets use glue on the surgery sites, it's safe even if your gatto starts licking it.

Here is a final picture of the incision site. It has been 11 days and it looks super. It can take up to 4 weeks for the stitches to fully dissolve for some cats. That’s the little piece of black you see.

Note:
Cats can sometimes get a small/hard lump by the stitches. usually this is due to scar tissue….for a larger bump it is smart to have your vet recheck to rule out a hernia.
