Hello,
I DIY feed my dogs raw and have done for years and I find it so easy.
Now after doing my research I've read that if I mince or grind the meat it takes the taurine from the meat? So I would have to supplement? Is the correct?
Also I've read that freezing the meat will cause the taurine to evaporate when defrosting? But I was always told that meat needed to be frozen to kill any parasites?
Thank you x

@k9guy , any tips to chime in ?
Preparing homemade raw food for cats is more difficult then for dogs. Having to worry about the correct level of taurine, etc. is something you do not have to worry about with dogs, that’s why I opted to go with the Stella & Chewy’s raw duck formula instead of making the food myself.

Good luck coming up a good recipe that contains all of the required nutrients. You are certainly on the correct path by doing as much research as you can before starting.

It's thought that grinding and possibly freezing could diminish the taurine but the good news is there is no such thing as too much taurine. Any excess taurine they excrete when they pee, so go ahead and add a taurine supplement to your recipe.

For example: Taurine

By the way what I've read about dogs vs cats in regards to taurine is dogs produce it but cat's do not so they must consume it.

In addition to the supplement, I buy chicken hearts for treats....heart has the highest level of taurine so this is a natural form. I feel like I'm giving them more than enough but I have to give them a treat once in a while anyway so why not a taurine treat (y)

Great advice above. Taurine amounts are also based on the type of protein. Yes, while freezing homemade cat food (good on you, by the way) does diminish the Taurine somewhat, you can always top off. What their bodies don't consume, just comes out in their urine. Just like humans and vitamin C. So whatever recipe you are following, feel free to add more Taurine.

Cheers!

I gave you a link to a reputable source above. Whatever you buy make sure it's not from China.
