A little over a month ago my wife and i became the proud parents of our baby Emuishere(Egyptian for kitten). She seemed ok at first then as time passed she simply would not gain weight or play. She would only lie around and sleep. We tried every option known to us to try to help her, cat specialist, tests galore...and i regret to report that our special little girl passed away in her mother's arms last Wednesday morning. We are so heartbroken...we wanted every one here to see what a gorgeous girl she was. She now rests on our shelf at home next to our Boston Terrier Riley who passed last year. Soon we will be getting a half sister to her. Our breeder has been so great through this and we will be getting a half sister to Emuishere next month. I will post pictures of her when she comes home. By the way we have already decided on a name for her...she will be Eloise.

Wow, Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. Your little girl was precious. I wish you much better luck with your next kitty Eloise (which is a really cute name, by the way). Do feel free to post stories and pics of her when she comes home with you and your family.

We are still awaiting autopsy results, but all the research i have done on the internet really points toward FELV...she had alot of the symptoms...i know it's hard to diagnose kittens sometimes...thank you all for your kind words.

Pat, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.

And I hate to be a party pooper, but if your kitten had Feline leukemia--her sister will likely have it too. As will her parents AND the rest of the colony of cats, if exposed. The kitten must be exposed my another member of the family way before she starts having symptoms.

A recommendation that I make to most of my clients regarding the death of a young pet that likely involved disease is to get a refund...not a replacement kitten.

I wish you the best of luck with Eloise. Please have her tested within 24 hours of reception for feline leukemia, feline aids and it would also be wise to have a PCR panel done to make sure she is negative for any corona viruses...which can indicate an infection of Feline infectious peritonitis.

Again, my condolances.

Situations like this it's almost impossible to console or give good news. All I can say, it will heal with time. Hang in there.

My wife and I can completly understand what you are going through. We lost Sam last Sunday to a blood clot, he was only 5 years young and the vet believes he may have had HCM. We had to make the decision Sunday night and it was the hardest thing we have ever done. Our house is not the same without him. Sorry for your loss.

update...autopsy results are back on Emuishere. She died of FIP...breeder has decided to refund us rather than give us a new kitten...She was great through the whole process. We have located a tuxedo boy and are in the process of getting him ready to come home next week. I will post pics of him ASAP...thank you all for your kind words and advice throughout this ordeal...much appreciated.

I lost a blue male tuxedo in March to FIP .... Sorry for your loss. Be aware that the FIP is still in your house.... you have to get rid of everything that you can not sterilize! I luckily have hardwood throughout the entire house which made it easier to bleach everything. Generally you should wait at least 3 months before bringing a new kitten into the house. Does the new breeder know you had a kitten with FIP? Most breeders wouldn't/ shouldn't let a new kitten be placed in the home so quickly. The breeder your kitten was from hopefully will cease breeding as the same will occur again.

Actualy, FIP is NOT a cattery disease, it's a CAT disease and there is very little known about what causes it. There are a TON of theories but nothing 100% concrete.

If you go to the Winn Feline Foundation, you can find a lot of information regarding FIP and the research that is being done. I actually have an FIP letter that I have all my adoptee's sign before getting a kitten from me. Most breeders will refund/replace if a kitten is lost to FIP as there is no guarantee against it, no test that is 100% proof and most kittens cannot be diagnosed until necropsie. You can have the cleanest house, the smallest program, the healthiest cats, and still be effected by FIP.

FIP can strike at any time and thankfully there IS research being done and hopefully one day there will be a way to innoculate against it or cure it.

My heart goes out to anyone who has lost a kitten to FIP. It's such a horrible thing to have happen to our beloved cats.

Hugs to you all,
Cyndee

I'm so sorry to hear about Emuishere.. I had Harry put to sleep today after his FIP started to get bad.. It's a sad, sad, thing :(

I would also recommend you wait.. With the FIP death being so recent.. You don't want to be at any risk for your new kitty to develop anything.

Oh, ellie4, I'm so sorry to hear about Harry. My heart breaks a little bit more every time I hear of someone losing their pet.
