Hi everyone,

I am particularly keen to hear of experinces from parents of an unneutered male who have introduced a new cat/kitten to the household.

My boy is a bit over 1 year old and is unneutered. He is the most gentle hearted and loving boy and we are keen to get him a sibling to play with/ keep him company. Our concern is that he has not had any interaction with other cats since we bought him home as a kitten, and our vet has warned us he may be teritorial as he is not neutered - though we have not observed any behaviour that would indicate this would be the case.

We would absolutely be neutering the new addition (male or female), however I fear introducing a new cat to the home and it not working out. I do not want to cause any undue stress to either cat and it would absolutely break my heart if I had to rehome.

Does anyone have experience introducing a new cat/kitten to the home of an unneutered adult male? Did you introduce a cat or a kitten, male or a female, and what was the outcome?

I understand introducing a new cat/kitten always has is challenges but I am wanting to understand if this is likely to be more difficult given he is not desexed.

Thanks!

If you are already fearing rehoming might happen if it doesn’t work, then I would not even take a chance. I thought you were taking your boy last year to be neutered or is this another boy? Is there a reason you are not neutering him?

For clarity, we have not observed behaviour concerns that would indicate it wouldn't work out or there would be a strong possibility that we would need to rehome. I only fear this as I have read in some worst case scenarios the cats will not adjust and this is the only option due to the level of stress caused

I think it's amazing you want to add to your family, I'm sure Wednesday would love a friend. Is there a reason for not having him neutered? :)

From my experience with cats (not sphynxes) it makes things easier, but of course you need to decide what's best, you know him :)

I added my girl Jade to my two boys a few years ago. Jade was 2 years old, just like the boys. The breeder said it coild only work when all three were neutered. But I don't know if that was cause Jade was an adult just like my boys. Maybe when you add a kitten it's less of an issue. Slow introductions are important.

Thanks for the insight everyone!

We ended up not getting him neutered as my partner was experiencing too much male empathy :p . As we live in an apartment and have limited risk of roaming, we agreed at the time we would neuter him if he started exhibiting the concerning behaviours typical to unneutered males. However at 1 and a half we still have no concerns. He is a very sweet and well behaved boy :)

@Catzzzmeow wasn't there a Fun Friday Fact about male cats living longer once neutered?

@Wednesdaysmum , highly recommend reading the fun fact friday shared above. .

keep in mind kitties are territorial. may show no signs until new kitty arrives. You can potentially end up with Urine marking spraying by both kitties! also sharing that intact not spayed females can urine spray too.

to have the best case scenario of harmony I strongly recommend a neuter of your resident kitty , wait for hormones to settle for about a month before introducing a new kitty, male or female.

I would put aside empathy in exchange for the health benefits of neutering and if you are considering introducing a new kitty.

glad you are asking very important questions . here is info from the sphynx information center section
