Hi, so I have a 4 year old sphynx, unfortunately myaelf and my partner have split, meaning her working from home will now result in hik being home alone a good 9/10 hours a day. I am. Now thinkibg to have a second to keep him company, is this a a good idea? Would a kitten be ideal or similar age to him? He hiss's at other cats through the window, so I'm unsure of what's best

Thanks

Alan

Thought you might enjoy the info above. Most Sphynx love having a buddy. It can take a couple of weeks to fully transition another cat/kitten into a home until they settle in. Age 4 is still young and most likely energy levels not too far off from a kitten.

Hi Alan,
Cats are solitary creatures. Adding a cat could be more dangerous than beneficial. I suggest that you make sure that your current cat is up to date on all vaccines before bringing in another cat that could infect your cat with a herpes virus or other disease. I wouldn't worry about him being alone as long as he has a window perch to keep himself entertained. He could also be very jealous and might display his jealousy with his litter habits. Hope that this message helped.

Sorry you're going go a difficult time. Most sphynx get along really well with other pets. My crew hiss to other cats outside but get along inside with other pets really well. Adding a kitten is most of the time easier than adding an adult cat. Although I added an adult girl with my two boys and that went really well.
But all depends of the personality also. Do you feel like he is bored now? Are you home most of the time after work? That can also make a difference in if it is necessary to get a buddy for him.

Hey, well I'm out from 7 am through to 4/5pm.... Where as the last 4 years he has always had someone at home 90% of the day... That's my concern

@dungate , sorry for your situation.
I have adult adoptees introduced at different times .I was working fulltime in the beginning. I did extremely slow introductions with a "kitty safe room" set up. Some kitties get along immediately, some not as much.
alot depends on personalities. I have been fortunate with the slow introductions. My bengal adoptee was a labor of love. She took months to settle in.

I personally found over the decades with adoptees that my neutered male adoptees bonded quicker. the girls were a little more prissy priss. lol

you will see pics of members sphynx various ages, adult/ kitten, adult/adult, male/male , male/female. female/female. alot depends on personalities.

You can see how it goes solo for awhile and re assess. most cats do alot of sleeping after their morning running around and breakfast. we do have single sphynx households that do just fine as well.

lots of love and extra play time when home together.
please keep us updated.

btw, love to see a photo /name of your sphynx. all paws are family.

Cats, particularly male ones, can be quite territorial. To them, their owners are a cherished part of their territory. If your cat has grown accustomed to spending most of the day with you, introducing another cat might be a big adjustment for him. It's also worth considering that the new cat might occupy his favorite spots or be eager to share his food. It's essential to think about their feelings and well-being when making such decisions.
