Hi Guys!

Firstly I would like to say hello! I am writing to you from Australia :)
This is my first post.

I have owned my sphynx girl since March last year. She has always had runny poo.
It is not Geardia! From everything I have read and been told by vets, it is irritable bowel.

I am wondering what other people have done to their cats that have the same problem.

The vets can help to a point, by the majority of vets in Australia have not had much experience with sphynx, as they are relitively new here.

Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome to sphynxlair, I can't help you sorry, but, others will jump
in and help out, I'm sure.
But, I can tell you, if you do change food at anytime, you have to do it
slowly, because this will mess their tummies up and could cause them trouble to.
So, if you aren't sure, how to do this, just ask.
I hope your baby gets straightened out.
What kind of food do you feed??

Thanks guys!

We are also dog breeders and are experienced with dietary changes.
Any time we have changed diet, we have done so over a very slow period of time.

I am not sure if you have these brands of food where you are. She started on Advance kitten (supplied by breeder). She did not do well on it, so I then changed to Royal Canin kitten..Still the same issues.... Since then she is currently on Hills Science Diet Sensitive Stomach...No Luck!!

I also tried a raw diet-with no luck.

Her issue is not due to diet change. I have devon rex as well, but she is the only one with the problem. Many sphynx breeders here in Australia have these issues. Probably due to the limited gene pool over here.

She is a beautiful girl, but in a matter of a week she chose not to use the litter tray. She then went on to destroy 3 bedroom carpets! Very costly :(

I am willing to try anything!

Hi sorry to hear of your issues. Switching food will surely cause poop issues. My advice on Giardia is this, it does not hurt your cat to treat it, test results can come up negative with the bug present in the cats system, please read this thread- http://www.sphynxlair.com/f53/sphynx-cat-diarrhea-giardia-3610/ again, it does not hurt to treat it.

Also has she been tested for tritrichomonas-foetus http://www.sphynxlair.com/f53/tritrichomonas-foetus-diarrhea-5501/ this also has similar symptoms. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hello and welcome fellow Aussie

Sorry can't really help you out with your problems, i'm sure someone here can.
The breeders i have spoken to do not have an issue with IBS or loose stools. What state are you in? I'm in SA

Welcome to the Lair! How long did you stay on the raw diet? You might want to give it a longer go. It is the only thing that has ever worked on one of my girls with almost constant runny poo. I personally don't like IAMS food, but breeders here use the IAMS hairball kibble with some success with diarreah issues.
My feline specialist vet publishes a site about litterbox issues--it's a fabulous informational site to help with litterbox behaviors and may even have something about ibs--here is the link:
Litterbox Behavior Solutions - Home She published the site because inappropriate litterbox behavior is the number one reason for people getting rid of their cats--she offers insights on how to accommodate your cat's needs. Give it a look.
Also you can use the search feature on the top of each page to look for posts about diarreah--poop issues are a popular topic---you'll find an unending supply of them most likely.

Again, welcome to our online family of friends--we're so glad to have you!

I have the same problem with my Benjamin. I tried all sorts of things, the only thing that has worked so far for us is putting him on Royal Cannin the Protein version. He also eats a bit of canned food of the generic variety, i give him only a table spoon or so of it in the AM and the PM so that he can gobble his heart medication up. If i give him anymore than the spoonfull, right out the other end it comes.
I also have a tortie devon rex with tummy issues as well. The royal cannin protein had done great for the both of them, for now!

Good luck.

Do you leave the food in the dish?
Do you take away the food away after each feeding?
What is the feeding schedule if any? Is it feeding totally random.
How many times a day or week does the cat throw up?
Is the food in a hopper or pet feeder?
Have you tried wet food at all?
Is the food stored in a moister free container?
Have you checked the dates on the bag of food?
Is any one in the house giving treats not specifically designed for cats or table scraps?
Does the cat drink milk?
How is the water quality? Well, distilled, from sink?
How does the cat get water. Pet dish, water pet fountain, toilet?
Is the cat strictly indoor, if not what are circumstances when cat is outside?

Great questions, unfortunately my cat is also having runny stools, IBS suspected. All the above questions or concerns addressed. Latest trip to vet for stool test ( negative) flagyl for inflammation and hyperalergenic food ( vet only...) did not help, in fact made stools runnier...
Now adding fortiflora prebiotic to help gut..
Aside from stools, he is himself, active, not d'hydratated, weird...

In our house the water got so bad that we started filling the cat water with the same water humans use (filtered water) which helped. Then another day it happened and in the end w/ switched the kibble a couple of times but ended up with the Science Diet brand which we think resolved the issue but we tried many things so it is hard to tell what was involved with the final cure. We also keep the toilet lids shut to prevent drinking problems.

Also, watch out for bad bags of cat food. Once we went to the store and they said the brand got recalled. I now purchase food from a big name pet store that my relative worked who told me how strict they are with keeping up with the shelf life of the food as smaller stores can keep around food past the prime date for consumption.

@axc123 hugs n positive vibes. I have an IBS kitty. I know that food trials can take upward to 12 weeks to see results. if the vet food is not working, they should take it back for refund/credit.

some have switched to a novel protein with good results as well as using the probiotics.
my girl could not handle very high protein foods (orijen , acana).

I ended up switching my crew to Nutrisource cat and kitten food years ago. touted for gut health. no skin or poo issues any more with my crew.

each kitty is different. I do know it was a process finding the right combination of food and allowing body to adjust to it for a few weeks + to see if working.

I get nutrisource online I like no recalls either.

all paws crossed for good news updates.

also, treats can be a culprit for poo issues. not sure if you use separate bagged treats?
