Hello all, I am a new sphynx owner. I adopted a 3 month old boy named Nudie and have had him for close to a month now. A couple weeks ago he started to have runny stools so i took a sample to a local vet and they said they didn't find anything. He eats the tiki cat brand. I chose that because it smells and looks like actual fish. He loves the Salmon and the Tuna ones. fast forward to now, he is SO bloated and low energy. he just wants to sleep and hide. Of course, I read the FIP articles and am becoming anxious as I have to wait until thursday for his appointment. I'm not sure what to do and if he's sick I will be devastated as he has been teaching me so much in our short time together.

So as you can see he has become very bloated over the last week. he is hungry but i also noticed he isn't just killing the whole bowl per usual. he is pretty greedy usually. and he just sleeps most of the day if not sun bathing. i'm worried :(

Oh my hat Thursday is so far away I too would be really worried. I shall be crossing my fingers you can get an earlier appointment. Try emailing the picture to your vet it might make a difference and help ease your anxiety too. All my prays are with you.
Sorry I have no other advice to help you here.

Welcome to sphynxlair. With a lethargic kitten who eats less then usual I would try to see if you can get an earlier appointment.
My Toa had a bloated belly, diarrhea and was lethargic as a kitten too. We tought it was FIP but then it turned out to be a food allergy. It was a long search but finally found the right food for him and then he became a playful happy kitten. Hope it'll be the same for Nudie!!

Yes I'm not wanting to think the worst as I am looking at the photos of when i first brought him home and remembering his behavior. He was acting normally and seemed very healthy, so i'm thinking it's a change in food that has caused this. anyway i'm trying my hardest to get him in somewhere now

Well i took him to an emergency vet and they did tests for a whole lot of $ and then told me to wait 4-5 days... after telling me that it is possible that he has FIP and saying he is showing symptoms. I'm in pretty low spirits about this as I feel like something like this needs to be treated with more urgency. I've been researching treatment which the same vet also said she would not administer if it is FIP, which makes me question why they're doing anything at all? This is a terrible experience for me as a first time pet owner and i can't help but feel like it's my fault.

Bless you. You are doing everything in your power to do the right thing. Do not stop doing the best you can. You are a good mommy. You reached out and did more than sitting at home doing nothing. I agree with the above message, contact your breeder. We are all holding thumbs and saying prayers for you.

There is also a group out there that can help you get treatment (there is treatment). They are called FIP warriors, I believe.

But yeah you should review your contract.

Did the vet mention anything about worming?

Keeping all fingers and paws crossed it's not FIP.
A good idea to contact your breeder. To see if the other kittens are still healthy and to see if he/she can help you. Hugs for you

To update everyone on Nudie, he is ok and still here with us. He did test positive for wet fip. I started his treatment today. Definitely one of the most difficult thing to do with a sphynx is give it a shot since he's just all skin and he doesn't like it whatsoever. The group that advised me and provided the treatment is very helpful and supportive so I am feeling hopeful. He is still hungry, purring and talking to me everyday. Thanks for the support

My breeder is also being very supportive and helping me pay for the treatment. even said he would give it to him if needed. I am glad that so many people are able to show support for this kind of thing. The vet i took him to was TERRIBLE. I paid them 1600 to get his tests done and they made me wait 4 days... On the 4th day I called to see if there was an update and the response was "oh yeah we actually do have the results.." LOL so not sure why i wasn't notified about that, but then the woman who told me the diagnosis proceeded to explain that there is no proven treatment and that they would not help me administer the experimental drug and proved how useless they really were. It was probably a sales pitch for me to come bring them more money to euthanize my pet. That being said, if you are in Los Angeles, never take your pet to Access pet hospital. They're scam artists and really just care about the money.

Good luck, sending good vibes your way! I've had mixed experiences with the LA Access in Culver--the pandemic has really done a number on vets here. I can't get an appointment with my regular vet without booking ten or more days in advance, and last time we had an emergency we called six or seven vets before we found one that wasn't turning animals away regardless of how badly off they were. We ended up not needing to take Em in, thankfully, but the only vet we could find was on the other side of the city from us and had a six hour wait. I blame the vet shortage, but FIP is a pretty clear emergency so you'd think even a triaging clinic would prioritize it....

It is a tough treatment, but I’ve seen it work so many times. If you look into the reasons for the drug being experimental here in the states, it all comes down to politics in the industry.
