I just answered your last post and happened to send you a link about L-Lysine. I definitely would say give it a try. We are using it as a maintenance here with our crew.

Patti
Our vet recommended lysine for alllergies. Our boy has major sinus issues. We are also giving him Zyrtec everyday. It has helped but not relieved his symptoms. Are there any other suggestions to help him with the mucus?

@lovessphynx , welcome to the lair -
What's your boys name?
Hope you can post a thread introducing him! Luv to see pics!
Did vet allergy test him?
Ideas what he is allergic too?
Other symptoms ? Rash etc?

I a, sure others will chime in with allergy relief suggestions
As for l-lysine , I give 1/4 teaspoon mixed in wet food
They recommend 250 mg for maintenance
590 mg if symptoms present

I use the Now brand - about $13 for a lb container
There are several good brands - just be sure 100% pure l-lysine
Btw, my 4 hate the ensyl-f paste version pump I bought at the vet for $27 :(

His name is Frankie. He has not been tested for allergies. I guess that must be a catch-all diagnosis. He has no other symptoms other than his sinus congestion. We have him on 500 mg L-lysine a day plus 2.5 mg of Zyrtec with his wet food. We feed him Blue Basics because of it's limited ingredients. We're at a loss for what else to try. Thanks for the advice.

@lovessphynx , Awh love Frankie's name :)
Can't wait to see a picture of your boy

Brainstorming here :) to try to get your boy some relief -
(With no other rash etc present ) I would try to eliminate environmental stuff as a possibility (probably did some of these already but will put it out there )

do you use a scented litter that could be irritating to him?
Many of us use Dr elseys unscented in blue bag - amd I don't get or get any dust clouds :)
Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter, 40-lb bag

How about laundry detergent fabric sheets or softeners?
My kitty couldn't handle blue food yrs ago
Howabout treats.?
Switched my crew to Acana grasslands and my Bengal gets Fromm game bird recipe

Sure others will chime in too-
Will keep the thinking cap on

Head smooches to Frankie

If you don't mind me asking, what are some of the symptoms?

Just a heads up. If you are buying Vetoquinol viralys you should look for a brand called Tomlyn L-Lysine powder for cats. They are owned by Vetoquinol (says so right on the Tomlyn label) and it's the same product, but different packaging at almost half the cost as Vetoquinol.

I don't give L-Lysine to Pixie, but often wondered if I should.
However, the RC Sphynx Adult already has Lysine and L-Lysine in it. (Along with a ton of other stuff)
I'm always careful not to give too much of something (goes for the horses too) because it's just too easy to overdose.

is this supplement a common one among ALL cat owners or just the naked community (LOL). Meaning is it more important for Sphynx cats to have rather than a domestic short hair?

@GMPLAX23 that's a good question! I had DSH cats my entire life and never heard of L-Lysine for them. When I got my first sphynx, my breeder told me to give him L-Lysine. So I took it as a thing you do when you get a cat from a breeder.

When my third sphynx had something going on with his eye when he was young, I took him to my vet's office (my regular vet was off that day). The other vet I saw told me to give him L-Lysine. I said that I always give it to him. The vet told me to double the strength when they have something going on with their eyes or an URI. Since then, that's what I always do. I definitely find it cuts down on their sneezing: When they start sneezing a lot, I double the L-Lysine dose and I find their sneezing goes away within a few days. If I wait...the sneezing lasts longer and a few others will start sneezing here as well.

So I'm thinking that if someone brought a DSH cat to the vet for an URI, the vet would recommend giving L-Lysine.

I don't know...just my thoughts. Maybe some other members will chime in and give their thoughts.
