So it's been a while.
Pixie became ill on Saturday evening and was very lethargic and wobbly, feverish, left eye practically glued shut.
Not sure what happened, probably scrapping with Jezzy. She spends most of her time under a fleece on the mattress heater, so I only noticed late Saturday.
She's had "blister", for want of another word, on her shoulder for a while, and this was now also inflamed and the skin under it swollen.
No vet, as it was quite late. None open on Sunday either, but she perked up on Sunday and I kept cleaning the eye with an infusion of Eyebright and Camomile, as well as Ocryl, which is an eyewash I have on hand. I honestly didn't think much of it, but then I never got a good look at her eye (she's impossible to hold still and check on your own.)
When I finally got a look at the eye I knew it wasn't good. It was cloudy and gunky. Tried to make an appointment on Monday, but I messed up and booked her into a vet that I never use and who is 40km away lol. Ooops. Went to my regular vet (who has an eye specialist) on the off chance that he can see her, but the eye specialist wasn't in.
Finally got an appointment at 9am this morning to see the eye specialist.
He was very sweet with her, and his first words were "Oh a Sphynx. I love those, they are so calm and gentle, never any drama."
So... apparently she somehow damaged her cornea. She's on 3 different eye drops, 1/2 tablet of antibiotics, and 1 dose of anti inflammatories per day for now.
However, he thinks she will probably need an operation to fix the damage in her eye. (It's really cloudy. Like I said, not good.)
He looked at the blister and the swelling, and isn't sure what it is, without testing. If she does need an eye operation, they will take the bump off at the same time and check it.
The cost is astronomical, of course. Not sure yet how I'll do it, but I'll do it somehow. (Friend of mine suggested selling bags of horse muck at 10e a pop lol. I just might have to!) I've told him absolutely no Ketamine (Pixie has a heart murmur) and he is looking at a different option for her.
Aside from all that... "This mustn't mix with this, and that mustn't mix with that. You need to leave at least 30 minutes between them, more is better. It's going to be a full time job to do all this I'm afraid."
Me: "I'm home, I'll figure it out even if I only get 3 hrs sleep."

My new schedule...
On top of that... I have a very, VERY pissed off Pixie at the moment. Because... not only am I bothering her with eye drops all the time, I also put the THING on her!
IMG_20240312_110440.jpg

The utter humiliation! She can no longer walk. Or sleep. Or climb. Or do anything but bitch at me, basically.
I told her it's the "Petal of Shame" or the "Cone of Shame" (which will chafe her neck and be even more uncomfortable).
Doctors orders.
So there you have it.
It's a struggle.
I go keep Grumpy company on the sofa now.

@Silke , awh.. biggest hugs to you and prayers the medications work and no surgery needed. My Yodaman had an eye issue (corneal sequestsrum and developed keratitis) and I was told by my regular vet may need surgery. I took him to the eye specialist who have me hope the meds could work. the eye specialist gave me different meds and drops. I stuck with the exhausting drop/medication routine and all cleared up in a few months. praying the same for sweet Pixie for eye and sore. hopeful the petals of shame and meds bring full recovery. all paws crossed, keep us updated often. what hugs n head smooches. you got this.

I took the petals off for now, as she's a lapcat atm. She doesn't rub or scratch, but it really impedes her movement. What with only seeing properly out of one eye makes it even more tricky. Of course, she adores that she's a lapcat atm lol. But if I move I get complaints. I'd rather that than the listless weak thing I had on my hands the past couple of days. When Pixie doesn't bitch...something is wrong.

Well, it's 7am, and I've done the first two rounds of meds. Next at 8.
I think I need a nap this afternoon lol.
But she's perky, that's a good thing. And so good about letting me put the drops in. Only a little complaint.

She continues to be a good girl, but the eye is still cloudy. It's obviously giving her issues, because she misjudges jumping up on things. Checkup tomorrow morning at 9:30. We're through Day 2 (counting the first one as a half day, and still half the day to go today). She even took the Antibiotics without much complaint. The lump is still angry and red though. It looks worse than it did on Monday. So even if they eye heals by itself, he wants to take that lump off in case it's something bad.
I don't think we'll escape the surgery, as it's more than one issue.
This is what the lump looks like today. :/
Originally I thought it was an insect bite, it was a tiny bump. Now it's like this.

@Silke , awh continued hugs n a family of lair prayers for Pixie. such a good girl. she has the bestest mum. all paws crossed for her follow up today. has she had doxycycline antibiotic and or an RX cream for that sore? the doxy worked well with a nasty sore on my Batman's paw pad years ago. my vet had me do soaks with a few drops of povidone mixed in water , and added a few drops of malaseb or trizchlor 4 shampoo . not sure if it would be indicated for Pixie but wanted to share.

followiing closely for updates. remember self care too!

Need serious good thoughts, lair prayers and whatnot.
Pixie is being operated on. They are hoping to fix her eye, and are taking off the lump. It will get analysed so I know what it is.
I have no idea yet how I'm going to pay that bill (over $600), but I don't care, just as long as she's okay.
I'm in absolute bits atm. :(

@Silke (((biggest hugs)))) and prayers , positive vibes for Pixie's eye surgery and skin lump surgery today. right there with you in thought and prayers for successful surgery. keep us updated . You are an amazing mum. ( not sure if there is a card like CareCredit? we have in the US? the vets office had brochure on counter, quick apply approval over the phone.. gives a promotional usually 6 mos to make monthly payments and pay off in full within promo period, or will eat alive in 30% interest. it has saved me many a times with big sudden vet bills, stayed on top of it and never paid a dime of interenst) no insurance here on my crew all adoptees and things would be prexisting).

so much love to little warrior princess Pixie. following very closely for updates. hope you feel all the hugs n positive vibes from me. you got this Team PIxie!

Vet called, she's out of surgery and waking up.
They are keeping her overnight though. (First time she's away from home without me)
Now the not so good news.
He thinks the eye may not be saved. There was a lot of damage to the cornea, and it may not have been successful.
The blood test was good, the lump is removed, and he thinks it's nothing serious. It didn't seem to be a tumor, but he will get it tested.
I can pick her up at 11:45 tomorrow morning. I'll likely not sleep tho, still worried, but at least she's waking up and seems okay.
That was my biggest worry, that something happens during surgery.
Her eye is stitched closed, and it will be 12 days before we know if it worked or not, when the stitches come out.
Still, she's alive. That's the main thing.

I'm still bawling on and off. I wish I knew what happened. I'm hurting for her and hate that she has to spend the night at the vets. She has to be so scared and disoriented. :( We've not spent more than a week apart in the 9 1/2 years I've had her, and then she was at home where she knew everything.
