Hi!

I am looking for a good primary care vet for my Sphynx. We have had some not so great ones in the past and I am hoping someone in the group might have some good referrals? Looking to find a good vet between SF and Redwood City, California.

Also I can recommend Dr. Justin Williams at VCA SF Mission District for Sphynx cardiology, but VCA (outside of Dr. Williams) seem to be Sphynx-clueless. Also note the HCM scans at VCA are pricey (approx. $750 with the consultation fee)!

@TheTopaz hopefully someone with knowledge of what you are looking for will chime in and give you suggestions. I'm on the East Coast but just wanted to say, "Hello!" and wish you the best in finding a great vet.

By any chance during your search were you able to find any vets closer to SF? @TheTopaz

Hi Jay,
I contacted another sphynx owner located on the Peninsula and found that beside Dr. Justin Williams at VCA in San Francisco (approx. $750 per cat), there is only one other commonly known place for sphynx with licensed HCM vet cardiologists in the area. They are the San Leandro VCA (it has a larger Vet Cardio department) with Dr. Richard Kienle and supposedly the scans are more affordable at $500 per cat. But most people in this area are going to the HCM clinic scanning events (approx $150 per scan) in Modesto (which is a very long drive with traffic, 2+ hours each way) and see Dr. Brian Mackie.

I found a few other vet cardiologists online but nobody has come forward experience with them for Sphynx. United Veterinary Specialty and ER says online that their vets are licensed and they have locations in San Jose, Mountain View and Campbell, I have no pricing info.

For regular, general practice vets with Sphynx experience I heard that Arguello Pet Hospital in Inner Richmond is good but I haven't tried it myself. I do not recommend Mission Pet Hospital or San Francisco SPCA Veterinary Hospital on Fillmore Street (SPCA is OK for ER services but not regular vet)

The cardiologist from the clinics is the best I have met, Dr Brian Mackie. We also saw Dr Waxman at Sage in Campbell but that was $580 per scan and he was not great. There is a traveling cardiologist they use at Arroyo Animal Clinic, Dr Kienle, it's an option if the clinic is too far to drive. Prices again are much higher at around $540

I added this quote to this other thread because I realize it is related to what I was mentioning above ^^^
