While I was growing up, a friend of the family had a Sphynx. I lost my Chihuahua of 7 years, last July. I've talked with my husband, and I think that a cat might be the right direction for us. I live in Minot, ND. If you know of anyone around here needing a new home, or a rescue, please let me know. I can travel anywhere in the state. I know that the odds are not in my favor, but keep me in mind if you hear about a Sphynx needing help in my area!

I am also looking to adopt a sphynx. The difference is I'm in Canada... western canada... Alberta to be exact. I have talked to a few breeders, and have quickly become concerned. Seems like every breeder I talk to has different answers to my questions. A few even told me not to be concerned about HCM with a sphynx, which made me gasp. I am interested in finding a good reputable breeder who is either close to me, or will ship. The other option is adoption/rescue, I am open to that option also. I don't necessarily hafta have a kitten, and older cat would be fine with me. I just want a healthy cat.

Another question I have for everyone here is... is it better for the cat/kitten to have a playmate? Should I concider getting 2 rather than just 1?

Oh geez, I just wrote a huge paragraph, but accidentaly clicked a button, and everything dissapeared :Dizzy:

In short, if a breeder tells you that scanning isn't important---Well, don't listen to them! I have spoken to several breeders who have said,

"Scanning is expensive. I don't scan, and that is why my kitten prices are so low. If I scanned, I would have to pay more. So I choose to not do it, because it is pointless anyways. :)Surprise:) HCM can pop up at any time, so I don't see a point in paying for it." !!! I ran as far away from that breeder as possible!

There are PLENTY of breeders who scan for HCM, study pedigrees, and know their lines and work hard to produce the best of the best. You'll find them out there. Visit cat shows in your area and speak to breeders. Go with your gut. If a breeder seems to be backtracking and telling you what you know isn't the truth, move on.

In my opinion, 2 is always better than one! Especially if you don't own any other cats/older cats who won't have the energy to keep up with a kitten/the new addition.

Best of Luck to the both of you in your search for a kitten!

Im sure this isnt the right place for this. But I found a breeder who has to reduce her number of cats. She has offered me a 5 year old retired Sire for 500.00. I have to sign a neuter contract, and travel 8 hours one way to go get him. Is this a good deal? She's offered to give me a f2 kitten for free, but im looking for the hairless. Any Ideas, or thoughts would be great!

Welcome to you both. Finding the right Sphynx can take a while. Do your research and follow your gut. If it feels too good to be true, it just might be.

I think $500 is on the higher end for a 5 year old, intact retired breeder. But might be worth it if he has been scanned for HCM and is in excellent health.

Be careful that price is to high for a cat you have to alter your self.
Not all breeders can be trusted.
The breeder I know sell altered cats that are 5 for $200 and 1 to 2 years old that are also altered for $500.
You also need to ask if she scans.
She also can be one of the breeders we know are bad.
My sisters sphynx dropped dead a few weeks ago at age 1.2

I have to agree, $500 seems way too high, especially since he isn't neutured. Neutering can run you another $150-$300 too. And if he hasn't been hcm scanned recently, for that price, I personally would move on. Good Luck!

He was scanned 3 years ago, by the breeder that she purchased him from. He is not current on his rabies, because he does not go outside. So with all of your advice and experience, would it be fair for me to offer her, say 350.oo for the cat? Considering the neutering cost, along with the rabies shot, on top of the fact that I have to pay for the 16 hour round trip? I found her on E-bay classifieds in SD.

Let me do research on her.
He should have been scanned once a year.
Do you want me to ask some of the breeders I know if they have any cats for $500 rght now?
They will come with everything.
Some sphynx do react to certain rabies shots also.
I only use the purvax.
Do you know who the sire and dam are of this cat?
I can trace them.

King is Jesanosqtees Im The Star Sofar. No info on the Queen. I would love to find a happy healthy cat that comes proper. The only downfall is, my location. Its hard to find anywhere close so I can go get the cat with out spending a lot. Your more than welcome to see if you can find any info on her. I just dont see spending 500 on a cat I have to alter, when she sells kittens for 750. :Frown: But I want a Sphynx so badly. Im at odds with myself.

I do know some good breeders but not in ND or SD.
What other states are close to you?

Here is what breeders I know have to say.

This sounds like a hustle to me. Tell your friend to run for the hills. A five year old cat should sell for around $300 already neutered and up to date on shots. Plus I have NEVER heard of this breeder, EV ER and that is a very bad sign. Have her ask the breeder for references and which other breeders she works with. And then if she can produce a reference from someone I know I would tell her to go ahead. Otherwise run like heck! You know how bad it can get to deal with a bad breeder.
And another reply.
Please tell your friend not to do business with this breeder.
There is a good chance she will be hurt in the end.
It is very strange not to know the dam.

Thanks so much for all the help and advice! I've asked her for information on the dam, and after I get that i'll ask her for references. Then IF the References check out, i'll offer her a lower price of 300 or so.

Also, just called my Vet, they told me that it would cost 52.50 to have the cat altered. At least its not as expensive as I thought it would be.

Wow that is cheap.
My vet charges way more.
Also Ketamine is not safe to use on sphynx cats so you need to tell the vet that.
It has been known to kill them.

Here is Fla. I just had my cat spayed AT A VET for $40.00 Nutering would be $25.00. I agree that $500 is way to much for a 5 yr old that you still have to fix and get shots. I would look on Hoobly and see what you can find. Sometimes there are some good deals. You may have to fly them in, but it may be worth it.

my 2 cents:
as a guestimate on your travel costs:
(8hrs * 6o mph)*2(rond trip) =960miles /30=32 gallons of gas 32*2.50(price of gas) 80$ + 30$ meals (frugal)=110$
110$+40$(hotel, cheap) =150$ --it's not safe to drive 16hour straight, the cost of hotel approximately equals feeding another driver

So, we would have a ball-park figure of 150$ that you've commited to even if the cat is in horrible shape, after spending that much, I'd be reluctant to turn down even a heart-breaking deal...

I'd recommend taking advantage of Sphynx Lair members to find a breeder with a good retiree, and have him/her shipped -- you would almost certainly end up with a healthier cat, and at a comparable cost.

as much as it pains me to use money as a recommendation -- lower vet bills means less worry, and longevity of your future kitty

Well the way i've thought of it is that after gas somewhere around 100 bucks, vet cost another 100 or so, I'd be safe to offer her 300. (I wont need a hotel, just a truck stop to catch a cat nap, i've done 24 hours straight from NC, to ND before.) I just got pictures of the cat today, that were taken in the last two days. I will be asking for vet records and some kind of a guarantee on the cat. So in the end if she wont accept the 300 that I will offer her, oh well i'll find the right cat one day.

On a side now, some one was wanting the names of the cats parents. The Queen's name is EGGROLL.
