Misha vs. His tail

So I adopted Misha at 4 months old. It was disclosed to me he had a peculiar habit of attacking his tail which his sister would join in on (not hers go figure )

It steadily became worse and worse and despite collars and cones I ended up coming home to a necrotic tail tip a week before Christmas.

Fast forward he got the last 1 ½" of his tail amputated a few days before Christmas and is living a mostly coned life. Aputation went very well any *almost* fully healed but the habit still hasn't stopped. and therefore have had small hiccups in healing tho mostly doing well. Hoping to see if the habit stops so He doesnt have to spend 90% of his life coned and 10% closely supervised.

Well wishes and positive vibes appreciated; and for those who have any advice I will gladly take it. Not sure if FHS or just naughty kitten behavior but we're all doing our best!

So sorry to hear of this. You might discuss with your vet if they feel it is Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome. They might be able to recommend meds to help curb the behavior. You can type Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome in the search bubble in this group as we have seen others experience this. Sending huge positive vibes your way. I also saw in the Sphynxlair FB group someone made this for their cat to wear. You might get creative and try something like this. Also if you do go the med route, I’d be happy to share my experience as we were hesitant putting one of our girls we had on “Kitty Prozac” but it really helped calm her anxiety.

Have been using a spray water bottle during cone-free time anytime he's caught trying to mess with the tip since before surgery. He so hyper when he's cone free that the poor guy is almost always sleeping in it now. He started to mess with it just a smidge I told him no and grabbed the bottle (luckily only a few steps away) and didnt even need to spray it as he recognizes the pink bottle now and knows when we use it... so while looking slightly guilty he just rested his head on his tail instead and went to sleep and I'm just really proud and happy. Had to share!
