My boy, (around 1.5 years, we're not sure) has been sick since I rescued him from a shelter three months ago. It has been stressing me out to no end, and absolutely draining me financially.

I'd like to preface this with the ENTIRE time I've had him, his appetite has been insatiable, he's very active, and every vet I've brought him to has said he's hydrated.

So- I've always wanted a sphynx but i live in California and struggle to save anything with the cost of rent and the lack of steady work. But much to my excitement, three months ago I saw a cat on a shelter's website in south lake Tahoe. I asked as many questions as I could but they told me they had no information as to who dropped him off or what his life was like prior to the shelter. Despite that, I paid the adoption fees, and started down the 6.5 hour drive to go get him.

Two hours away from my destination, I hit a deer and totaled my car. I spent a stressful hour pulling debris from the road, and continued the rest of the way, minus one headlight. We made it to south lake Tahoe about 1AM, spent the night at a hotel, and went out early in the morning to pick him up. I immediately fell in love. After they gave him his vaccines, they gave me blankets, a cat carrier, litter box, some food (provina sensitive skin and stomach wet food) And sent me on my way. So through the long car ride back, he was fine. Only really meowed through the last hour or so. Brought him home and gave him space, to let him de-stress after a 6 hour car ride.

Our first few weeks, scrote had constant diarrhea flecked with blood, and vomit flecked with blood. Obviously this wasn't a "he's fine and he's just adjusting" thought for me so I took him to two separate vets, three times.

The first vet, along with a 250 dollar vet bill, gave me proviable-forte and pro-pectalin to use. Other than that, the vet said my cat seemed very healthy and it was most likely stress causing this. So i listened and gave the recommended dosage. Upon reading the instruction on the tube of pro-pectalin, it said to NOT give to cats that were vomiting, and my cat was, as I made very clear to the vet, vomiting. Despite what I mentioned, the vet told me i should give it to him anyways, and so i did. But Scrote had immediate reaction to this medicine, and kept throwing it up. So i made the decision to stop him on that, and used the proviable-forte until i ran out. Because there was still no change in his movements, or vomiting, and it seemed like it was actually getting worse-- i took him into an emergency vet to get a second opinion.

300 dollars later they said he looked fine, but they wanted to keep him overnight to observe him. So i obliged, And let them keep him overnight. This vet gave him subcutaneous fluids, as well as a 24/hr anti-nausea medication. Twenty four hours pass, I get a call, and they say he did just fine, nothing out of the ordinary and not to worry.

For the first time since i brought him home, most likely due to the anti-nausea, his movements looked like they should, and were the least concerning they've been. But the next day, it was back to normal. (or what normal was for me.) I changed his diet slowly multiple times, As this was recommended by the emergency vet. To ensure scrote got the proper protein he needed, I was shelling out around 108 dollars every two weeks for RAWZ 96% rabbit pate, to be absolutely sure there was no chicken product in his food. The vet said just to keep him on a normal schedule and see if things change.

Which leads me to my most recent problem. Things have changed for worse. Scrote has started defecating everywhere, including on two blankets that were in my lap with him. This sent me into a panic, and I took him to the first vet the next day. After a 400 dollar vet bill, a fecal panel, bloodwork, all they had to tell me was that a single liver value seemed higher than it should be, but nothing to panic over. They recommended keeping him on solid food, start him on B12, and Metronidazole suspension. The pharmacy they selected is almost an hour away from me and I have no reliable transportation anymore. This has been the most stressful thing I've ever experienced. Between trying to save for a drivable car, paying all the vet bills, and making sure scrote gets all the help he deserves to live a good life. I don't want to give him up, but I'm at a loss, and don't quite know where to go from here.

No progress at all makes this feel pretty impossible.
Sorry for the long post, I just felt it necessary to give all the info I could.
Here's a picture of the lil dude for tax purposes.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Gosh, I am so sorry to hear of the stress. Are you feeding wet or dry or both? How soon after eating is he throwing up? Does he scarf down his food and throw it up? If so a slow feeder bowl might help if that is the case.
cf35b2cb142e0d4d3c1d1b8b7ad310f3.jpg

Have you tried limited ingredient food? That might help incase it is due to having an issue with a certain ingredient.

Positive vibes are sent.

Currently i am only feeding him dry food. Before i had him on 50% wet RAWZ rabbit pate with pumpkin, 50% dry RAWZ rabbit dry kibble, and a prebiotic/probiotic. Generally he eats pretty fast, but no throwing up anymore. Just the diarrhea. Limited ingredient foods is what I had him on, and it didn't seem to make too much a difference.

@Grommet , hugs, welcoming you and adorabble Scrote to the lair family . oh my heart, you have been through soo much with everything you shared in your post.
what dry food is he on now? glad he is no longer vomiting. You have done alot for sweet Scrote. bestest mum.

a members shared there is stool sample PCR test ..tests for over 20 different parasites including crypto, giardia, coccidia, tritrichomonas . not sure if that was Scrotes stool panel check?

we have seen tritri, crypto and coccidia being an underlying culprit when other things ruled out.

sharing, years ago I read hairball formula foods have helped with diarrhea. my crew has never had a chicken allergy and I free feed a small bowl of hills urinary hairball along with a bowl of their regular nutrisource cat and kitten dry food. I feed what works for my crew. each kitty is different. some in another group swear by Iams hairball formula was a game changer for solid stool results.

being he is not throwing up sounds like you are on the right path. food changes can take upward of 10-12 weeks for the gut to settle.

out of box issue... what litter do you use? I switched my moms adoptee to Dr elseys unscented litter in the blue and white bag and put it in a bigger litter box and never an issue again.

I use big litter boxes like the jumbo catit. I am not sure what type of litter box you use? doe it hae a lid or a door flap, I always pop out the door flap. some cats prefer open large boxes with no lids and not located near noisy washer dryers. a link with some helpful info. for one cat, I always had two litter boxes at different locations. Mine are picky, I have to scoop twice a day or they look in the box and walk away.

we are here for you and adorable Scrote ( creative name :) )

deep breath, you got this. the info center and top right search box is helpful for specific topics, previous threads

hugs and positive vibe head smooches.

Anthony & Scrote
Take a look at some of the medications you might be taking and if they can be shed through sweat/body oils. My Sphinx Shaggy got pretty sick last November. He started going off his food, which was unusual as he eats like a ravenous wolf. It got to the point where he was completely off his food, was vomiting and constipated. He was also particularly cranky. This started Tuesday, and I took him to the vet on Wednesday. They got him to eat a little of their food & gave him an anti-nauseant injection. His physical condition seemed normal. They gave me the remainder of the can to bring home & I bought 2 more cans. Once I got him home, he refused eating again and vomited up what he ate at the vet. I took him back on Thursday, where we did blood work and imaging. The bloodwork was normal except for a low platelet count, and the imaging showed some inflammation in his digestive system. They got him to eat some of their dry food and gave me some to take home. He refused to eat it and vomited it up again when we got home. Thursday night, the low platelet count and the other symptoms triggered something in my brain when I was in that twilight zone between wake and sleep (that’s where I do my most creative thinking). I was suffering from similar symptoms. I am having chemo infusion for breast cancer. I took Shaggy again on Friday. I discussed the possibility with her, stating that for 72 hrs after an infusion, chemo can leach out through body fluids such as sweat, body oils, urine, etc. (chemo toxicity). As Shaggy got sick, he wanted to be petted, a lot. I was poisoning him. I asked them to give him some fluids and another anti-nauseant shot. I figured if I was the cause, he should start feeling better on Saturday, as that is when I started feeling better. Sure enough, Saturday morning, Shaggy’s appetite was back, there was no more vomiting. I now have cotton gloves to wear when petting him until I finish my chemo. There is no proof of course, but it is very coincidental. Skin to fur contact provides a barrier for fur babies, but skin to skin with Shaggy allowed the toxins to be absorbed through his skin. Something to give thought to for anyone having to do chemo.

Nothing too different, He's still straining to go, and there's not much change in the consistency. He's still sick, and not using his litter box. He's still a ravenous little guy and extremely affectionate.

I just got back from the ER this morning as I had a pretty bad scare myself. I'm just trying to remain calm in all of this.

That is extremely good to know. I hope you're doing okay, chemo is a scary thing and i know you don't know me but i am proud of you for putting up with it. Currenly i'm not taking any medications, i've always been pretty uncomfortable with medication, so I don't use anything if i can help it.

He is on Earthborn salmon and veggie, dry.

We did a stool panel, yes. it came back negative.

I will take a look at hairball remedies if the medicine scrote was prescribed doesn't work.

I use sustainably yours corn and cassava, low dust. I've tried pretty littler, but it was expensive and didn't clump, so i switched to pine pellets, scrote HATED pine pellets.

Thank you, I will continue to try my best.
