There was a CFA show only about 30 minutes away from my house this weekend - Of course I had to go check it out!!!! I watched a darling blue/white tuxedo kitten go 2nd best kitten in show, and got to watch a beautiful calico Sphynx take best premier, it was so much fun, I've never been to a cat show before, talking to the different breeders, seeing the different breeds, and especially the Sphynx was great - My allergies are going haywild (I'm allergic to alot of cats!), but it was worth it!!!! I've got papers on Haley, I think I might try showing her in September when there's another local cat show and see how it goes - My new baby will be old enough to show by then as well, so I'll probably enter him, too!

Very cool! There's a TICA show coming up near me in August. I've never been to one before either, so I'm pretty excited to check it out.

That is very cool. We've got a large show in OKC in April. They also do HCM screening there. It's $90/cat. We're having each cat HCM screened and may also "throw them in the ring" and see how they fair. Baldwin's got a scar on his leg, I must wonder if that will earn him a fault but Buck's temprement--it will certainly earn him some attention. He LOVES to be the center of affection. Buffy is too good to even bother traveling in the car without some sort of hub-bub...better phone ahead and let them know to roll out the red carpet.

Ya, that was my attitude, but since the breeder of my baby wants me to show him, I figure there's no better way to learn then to go to a show or two LOL I can't wait until the show in September, I wish there where more closer to me, I work to much for traveling very far to be an option!!!!!

Showing is fun.
When I show alot of people ask what Cleo is and want to touch her.
I had never seen the judging before I showed even though I had been to a few shows.
I hope your cats do well.
One of the sphynx breeders helped me clean Cleo at her first show which helped.

I imagine entering them in the show is a lot of work, but probably fun, too.

hehe, although I think I have the two most beautiful sphynx's on the planet, somehow I don't think the judges would agree...Walter with his fuzzy tail and small ears, and Helen with her old lumpy skin and one cloudy eye... It would be hilarious if I showed up with these two!

They'll place right after my babies in my ring ;) LOL I'm still learning alot about the Sphynx standard, really know nothing about it - Haley has a fuzzy tail, but it's not really fuzzy, so it'll be interesting to see how she does. Oogie is bald bald, but he's a bit bigger then alot of the Sphynx I saw at the show, and was declawed on all 4 feet when I got him, so he can only show TICA in the household pets where they're really not being judged against the breed standard anyway.

My apologies to anyone who thinks I bring up the HCM topic too much, but you all know how close to my heart this is...

So anyway, there's a TICA show coming up in my area at the end of this month. I've just emailed the people running the show to see if they're doing HCM scans (since PitRottMommy has mentioned you can get them done at shows inexpensively) They are now looking into having scans done at the show! And, it will probably run around $100 per cat.

For anyone considering having your cats scanned, I just wanted to reiterate that this is a much cheaper alternative than going to a cardiologist. I've wanted to get my kids scanned since the day I got them - especially since I have no medical or family history on them - but I haven't had $500 per cat to pay for the test.

Looking forward to posting Helen and Walter's negative HCM test results on this thread at the end of the month!! fingers crossed

I do not think any of the shows do HCM scans here.
My Vet and UC Davis do them though.
I need to have Cleo scanned,
She will be 1 next week.
I am showing August 8th in Roseville.

Mews2much, I didn't think this show was doing the scans either - they didn't advertise it. I emailed them to ask, and they emailed right back to say they were waiting for information from the person that was to do the scans. I would recommend asking ahead of time, you never know - they may appreciate the suggestion!

Another less expensive way I've found to have the scan done is to call a breeder and see if they'll let you bring your cat with them when they scan all their cats. I found a breeder here that is willing to bring Walter when she has her cats done. She takes them to the University of FL (2.5 hours away from me) and I can get it done for $150 but it won't be until the end of the year. She's able to get that price because she is a breeder and has so many cats scanned at once, but I would have to pay full price if I went on my own. All the breeders I've talked to have been more than willing to help - they understand the importance of HCM scanning.

Happy Birthday Cleo :Celebrate:, and good luck at the show on the 8th!

Thanks Brooke,
I will email them and ask about the scans.
My 17 year old Coco had a HCM scan in 2005 and i think I paid $150 then.
She is not a sphynx.
My vet gives me discounts sometimes because I have been going there a long time and have spent a lot.
This is the show I am going to.
Roseville is not far from UC Davis.

The show in October will be Cleo's first TICA show.
Here is a link to that show.

When I think of cat shows, I think of snotty old ladies. Don't ask me why. I just see old ladies walking around flapping their gums about how their cat is better than your cat.

Who knows. I might check out a show one day.

Well, I'm going to my first one in a few weeks...I'll let you know how it goes! So far, I've emailed a couple of ladies about HCM scanning and they haven't been snotty at all! One of the ladies emailed me back and invited me to come "hang out with the sphynx breeders and get a feel for showing" (those are her words). Sounds like it might be a good time...we shall see!

Yes there are some rude people at the cat shows.
Not everyone is like that.
I have met nice people at the shows.
