I'm not a vet. But your vet will ask a bunch of questions like how often your boy is coughing, what else he has been doing before he coughs, if he vomits, has a running nose, has trouble breathing etc.

It looks to my untrained eye that your boy is coughing something up out of his throat, similar to having a hairball cough. I had a sphynx who would get hairballs because he was forever grooming my haired cats. They can also pick up fibers from licking clothing and toys too. And it could be a food allergy symptom.

Follow your gut. You will just "know" when something is not right and that you need to call the vet.

He doesnt have any fever. He is eating drinking and pooing as normal. Thank you for the advice I will keep an eye out.
They sleep on fleece blankets could be licking them and of course in typical kitten fashion any bits of thread etc seems to get a munch :BigSmile:

Nala coughs like this sometimes too, usually only once every couple months or so though. I have tried to figure out why, and the only thing I can think of is because she eats too fast. She only does it right after she eats, and sometimes she will throw up a little too. More times then not it is when I put new food in her bowl!

She sure loves her food. haha

I had to board Butterball at the vets office while I went to Colorado over Christmas. When I picked him up he was coughing up a storm. I was worried until I found out he had kennel cough which is a minor infection which is pretty common when boarding animals. He was fine, just coughing alot. After a week or so, the cough subsided.

One of my cats was coughing several times a week, I'm a very paranoid cat mom, so we went to a specialist. He has asthma. Berlin also had something that looked similar to this cough, I also took a vid, smart thing to do as you can show the vet exactly what it is, nothing guarantees the cat may exhibit the cough at the vets office. It was n inverse sneeze due to seasonal allergies and it has never returned. If your baby is doing this as often as once a day, I would be very concerned, but as I said, I'm a paranoid cat mom! I`ll see if I can find the video of Berlin, for comparison!

to be honest, coming from someone who works in a veterinary hospital, that sounds like somethign to get checked out. it sounds like a productive cough(meaning he is trying to remove something from his bronchi). It might be bordetella(kennel cough), but it almost sounds more like a lower resp infection (bronchitis, etc.). I would get chest xrays done, and possibly a throat swab and culture.

I've had Snuffie for almost a year now. She has probably only done this 3 or 4 times. If this is happening daily then I'd have it checked out, but if its just every now and then just keep an eye on it...I'm not a trained vet,,,but thats my opinion.

Goodluck, I hope your little guy is okay,,he is adorable!!

To be honest, I'm not sure if what he's doing is a true cough or if he's doing the "prelude to a puke" routine. I've seen kitties do that right before they puke up dinner. And when they're trying to puke up a hairball. A cough like that is often the first symptom you see with asthma (true in humans too). Or it could be something else like bordatella, like ElGato said. It could even be that he aspirated something (sucked something like a hair down into his windpipe).

If it continues with any regularity I would have the vet check it out just to be safe.

 Yes he has been doing it again today. My husband is now away for the weekend

I'm going to keep an eye over the weekend and make sure he is okay. If not then a trip to the vet on Monday. Last time we were there we got the standard advice of if hes well and eating, pooing etc then nothing to worry about.

Not to get you too worried but Goody coughed a lot just like in the video. She eventually died of undiagnosed lung cancer. Get your sweet baby to the vet and stay on top of it. Let us know what the vet says. We all love our kikis.

 To be honest google is a great thing but its got me paranoid now. I'm so worried.
I'm praying he will be okay.

Do you think I need to increase house temperature or is there anything I should be doing if it is an infection?
Could it be cancer at such a young age? 17 weeks

My Chihuahua had a version of "Kennel cough" and it almost sounded like that.

If he is still coughing Monday morning, I would make an appointment to take him to the vet to get it checked. Don't let your imagination or worry get the best of you. Cancer at 17 weeks is a long shot. It's most likely something more common like bordetella. Good luck. Let us know how he does.

Thank you. I will let you know - update he was so tired and sneezing slept most of the day and is now eating like there is no tomorrow. He looked like someone who has a cold. Now he is running and play fighting again with the occasional sneeze/cough.:Surprise:

Sounds like he's getting an upper respiratory infection going on. I'd say it's vet time tomorrow. Hope the little guy feels better soon.
