Hi everyone!
My name is Heidi Schamberger, I live in Kansas City, MO
I am new to the forum and so glad to be here.
I have 2 Sphynx, Harry and Gigi.
Harry was diagnosed with HCM a couple years ago and Gigi has an elevated heart rate.
On July 31 I noticed Gigi was not breathing normally. (she gets an echo once a year and Harry every 6 months)
I rushed her to the ER and they took X-rays and told me she was in congestive heart failure. WHAT>>?
She was treated with Lasix and oxygen and stayed in the hospital all weekend.
When she came home she was so lethargic, but was improving everyday. I took her back 3 days later for a kidney level check and she was fine.
Gigi and Harry are both rescues, I have had GIgi 5 years *she is 6* and I have had Harry 7 years *he is 10 or 11, not sure*
Gigi has always had a bad upper respiratory infection.
I noticed her face had swollen HUGE (I work from home and caught it right when it started thankfully)
I rushed her to the ER (we have lived there all month )
It was an infection (same stuff that is coming out of her nose) They wanted to sedate her to get it out and I said NO WAY! They poked it with a fine needle and when I took her home I used a heated compress and got the hole to open (sorry, its gross) and massaged it (it was hard as a rock) and I got most of it out. Now it is gone, thankfully.

So yesterday I was feeding her (this poor angel is probably sick of me by now being at her side 24/7 but I cant help it, they are my world)
And I noticed fluid in her thigh area (on the inside) She is super tiny, about 5 lbs so I knew it wasn't fat hanging. I called them and they told me to come in today.
They told me it was Edema? Her cardiologist wasn't there, they sent me home with Lasix.
She is on Atenelol, Enalapril, Baby aspril, Zithromax, and was on Baytril all last week. She is also on a nose drop (it is for the eye, but I am to use it in her nose)
The cardiologist called the hospital and they told her what was going on. She said she did not believe that it was related to her heart. So I guess I am wondering WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON??? I love my cardiologist, but darnit, I need answers. I need them now. I know I am sounding impatient, and I know I am being. But I am so scared.
Has anyone been through this? Can someone talk to me? My heart is broken.
Thank you for listening.

Hello Heidi and welcome to Sphynx Lair! First of all let me tell you that your kitties are beautiful! Second, I don't know where you stand with your vet or this hospital but I would suggest seeking a second diagnosis from another vet. You must of spent lots of money in an ER. Just because it's a pet ER does not mean they ar the most qualified. Call around to a few local vets and tell them your story, If the vet him or her self takes the time to get on the phone with you and spend a bit of time talking and concerned then this is who I would go to. I really hope these babies are ok in the end.
Good luck!:Laugh::ThumbsUp:

Heidi, you're doing the right thing by having your companions seen by a cardiologist--which specializes in the heart. There's no one better to take care of your babies than someone who does nothing more than see patients with heart problems.

Thank you, I think they are pretty stinkin cute myself. I am having so much fun looking through everyone's photos. I am going to upload more tonight.

I have taken Gigi to 6 doctors in the last 3 weeks, all specialist and 2 Cardiologist. (not because I do not trust our cardiologist, but because she wasn't there, but we have seen her since this has been going on.) The place I take Gigi and Harry to is an emergency hospital, but also a specialty clinic, that is why who ever is there was the one to see her when I brought her in.
I took her today and the Edema is NOT related to the heart, and has been going down. The Dr took her off Lasix .
The entire time we were in the hospital Gigi was walking the counter from Dr to Mom to Dad, she was so happy. She has been improving, but I need to keep a close eye on her. I haven't left her site (I know she is sick of me, lol)
Thank you for your kind thoughts on my little princess.

Heidi, wonderful to hear that Gigi is doing well. I've been praying for her since hearing about her being under the weather. Glad to hear she is back off of Lasix and enjoying life again. I'm sure they love seeing her at the hospital. I took Buck in today to donate blood at the hospital we frequent (but I don't work at, they're much larger and do more blood donations and my boys' blood is needed there). Anyhow, it's always an uproar when people see the furless wonders. I'm sure they enjoy seeing Gigi there just as much. I'll bet her purrr-sonality is twice as big as she is ;)

Heidi,
This is awesome news! Good to hear that she's improving and I'm keeping you Gigi in my thoughts. Please, please keep us posted on how she does.

Like I mentioned on our phone call, when Harold had his first bout with heart failure, he never fully recovered from it - he never got back to being the same active and playful kitty that he had been before he got sick - so the fact that she's doing so well today is a very good thing! Plus, he was on a lot more medication that Gigi is on. He was on the highest doses possible, with no room to grow. It's wonderful news that she isn't on Lasix! If you ever have to get to that point, that's when it gets scary... but the fact that she doesn't need it now, I have very high hopes for her!!

Keep doing what you're doing, Heidi. You're a great advocate for your two kitties - they couldn't ask for a better mom.
