Hey there,
my boy Oscar has eye-issues since i got him one year ago. I tried different vets, and homeopathy. Homeopathy worked best so far but the problems didnt go away.... now I saw a new vet and she told me to visit an eye-clinic, because she thinks its an entropium.
While searching the net, I found that entropiums were quite common in the sphynx breed.
What are your experiences?
are there any "after-operation" pictures you could show me?

Im very scared ;-(
My appointment at the clinic is next week.

Best wishes,
Lisa

@treefoil, hi Lisa and Oscar

Please know we are here for you ! I have no experience with it in cats but rather dogs
I want to give my thoughts and support to you and Oscar!

I know others here have dealt with it with their sphinx and will chime in!

It gets treated and they go on just fine and feel much better!
Keep us updated! Smooches to Oscar!
Ps-.where r u in Germany? My relatives are in Karlsruhe

@treefoil : sorry to hear this. Hopefully George will by fine after the operation!
I don't have any experience with eye problems (I'm a new sphynx cat servant) but the others here will chime in!

@Catzzzmeow
hey thanks so much for the thead. I think it takes my fears a bit. And I'm sure the vets will do the right thing. Oskar is such a sweet darling. I dont know what i would do if something goes wrong. Also I'm afraid of the scarring it will leave...
he's a pinky, it will look ugly. :-(
but on the good side he can show his baby-blue eyes more often :)

@Yoda mom
Thank You :)
I will keep you guys updated.
Well I live in Berlin. Approx 650 km from Karlsruhe, I never visited it so far :)

@Toa and Ross
haha thank you :)
Maybe there wont be an operation, but now that i know what an entropium is, i really think he has that eye-condition. (after browsing the pictures)
and that might also be the reason why no medicine or vet could help so far. she was the fourth vet I visited and gave me the tip.

on thursday i'll know more.
until then take a look at some pictures ;-P
greets, lisa

@treefoil No problem. I hope all goes well for your baby. @Helsinki little girl Zoa was bright eyed and naked tailed fast...wishing the say for your baby! Great pics ! Keep us posted. We are seeing more occurrences of this issue and it is great to have documented results. Just remember no Ketamine! If you can document with pics it would be great.

ketamine? what does it do? I just read the vets use it to get them to sleep. Is it bad especially for cats/sphynx?

Of course, I can document it for everyone. Just to see the pictures and wellbeing of Zoa helped me alot

This was interesting for me, I am a specialist ophthalmology nurse! So I see this condition in humans pretty regularly. But I didn't realise sphynxes were prone to them! They are fairly easily treated in humans but I realise there is more anaesthetic involved for our poor animals! Hope Oscar gets sorted soon. Let us know what happens

@treefoil glad all went well...but now you know there is a danger in using Ketamine in this breed. That is why this community is awesome. We share the facts about the breed as well as the fun. Being that heart issues can become an issue in the breed, it is best to not even chance it. No regrets once informed.

hey there,
so I saw the eye-specialist the other day aaand it is NOT an entropion...
thats good so far. BUT there is a but.
Both my babies have at least one or more infects since they were kittens. now they are 1 yr and 3 months old the infect is super chronic since no vet made tests before and experimented with medics.
well i knew that oskar had eye-problems, but tilda too? i had never expected that, since she looks fine to me.
he expects them to have had a kitten flu that was never diagnosed. ;-(
the infect could be herpes, chlamydia or myowhatever... or all three at the same time...
now they get interferon eye-drops. and when the infect/infects are diagnosed correctly i have to give them pills and liquids.

many costs and medicine... I could cry cause i think its my fault... i should have seen more vets... but every single one i saw before was like lari-fari-nothing-serious-they-are-still-young-and-the-immune-system-will-do-it... damn...

at least the vet told me the infect is easy to fight, but since they had it for over a year there is a possibility that oskars eyes are damaged fr the rest of his life. he might also never open up his eyes to their full size.

I am sad and angry about the news but finally there is a diagnosis and good chances to get them healthy again :)

thanks everyone for information and support!!!

@treefoil Do not blame yourself. You did not cause this. Did vet do PCR test yet? This should help figure out the exact issue and what meds to put them on. It is great that it is not an entropian issue as that usually means a costly surgery. Just follow the vet's orders and you watch how quickly things clear up. Once you know exactly what the diagnosis is...chlamydia etc let us know as I am sure members can give tips.

Hey there,

well since I visited the eye-specialist I found out that Oskar has no entropion. Thats good so far, so there wont be an operation.

And I'm also quite happy that I finally have a proper diagnosis, Osis immunsystem fights with this whole infect since birth. The vet took a smear-test (? thats what the dictionary said haha) of his eye.
Well ... BOTH cats have mycoplasma- and herpes-infection.

There is the possibility they had it since birth or got it on the way into my home.
Oskar had herpes on his mouth the day i got him, the breeder told me it was a scratch... He also had conjunctvitis and gingivitis... after 4 days my baby Tilda (Oskars sister) got very ill with diharrea and vomiting for about a month to the point I thought she might starve. So there must have been something going on before I got them.

Well the vet told me its super chronical, since they have it for a year now. There is the chance they have an immun-issue going on, but for now we will medicate them and afterwards see whats happening. Its also possible that Oskar will never open up his eyes very much or will be damaged for life...

Damn I should have seen more vets... And shouldnt have trusted my first one for so long.

The whole treatment cost me 450€.
Both cats get two types of eyedrops, a antibiotic-juice and pills EACH DAY for 6 weeks.

3x Interferon eyedrops
2x Azyter eyedrops (3 days in a row, same in 2 weeks)
1ml Zithromax juice
2x 1/4 pill Famvir 125mg

The vet told me that only the Famvir pills are against herpes and that it will go away completely if the immunsystem isnt damaged. (since I read herpes will stay for life)

Well the madication also helps to fix the immun-issues, gingivitis and the snoring that was getting louder each month.

I hope for the best :)
Osis eyes are more open and clear now, that makes me happy. I forgot how beautiful his eyes are.

Thanks for you support and have some pics :-D

Glad to hear you have a diagnosis now. Hopefully the medicine will work out for Oskar and Tilda!

Don't blame yourself, it's not your fault and you didn't cause this problems. You went to the vet several times and kept on searching.

And Oskar indeed had beautiful eyes!
