So Butchie was neutered 10 days ago, and while he was under the vet took swabs and blood samples to see if we could finally find out what's wrong with him. Thankfully he tested negative for FIV, FeLV, Herpes and Calici, but the ocular swab came back positive for Mycoplasma. Having read up on it after speaking to our vet this morning, it matches the symptoms Butchie has been suffering for the last 7 months

We have an appointment on Wednesday to start a 2 week course of Doxycycline, and I'm keeping everything crossed that will clear it up and that it will stay cleared up!!! Vet said if his symptoms return when we stop the antibiotics, it's probably due to some other illness or health issue, and we'd be back to doing more tests.

I don't think I have seen anyone post about this illness before (at least not since I joined) and I'm wondering if anyone has experiences to share??

If this is what's wrong with him, and there's no other cause, and he will be alright and not sneezy and snotty any more, it would be the best birthday present ever!!!

@Cinafina (((((healing positve vibes)))))
Doxycline has been effective as an antibiotic for my crew in the past for other things-
It's worked amazing - all paws crossed for Butchie

Thank you for sharing the adorable pics!
Will be following closely for updates

One of the sphynx kittens that Kenzo follows on Instagram just went through this same thing. I’m not sure of the whole details, but the owner had to keep the new kitten separated from her other sphynx while he was being treated with antibiotics. After two weeks of antibiotics, he was fine, and now they are playing, wrestling and cuddling together just fine. I believe the only symptom she posted about was runny nose. Not super helpful, but I hope that’s reassuring to hear others have went through this and been just fine!

Thank you! :) I hope it works and that there's no other underlying cause. Would make me sad if he got better during the 2 weeks on doxy and then was same again... I'll have a read of the search results tomorrow! (y)

Thank you for sharing! I hope that will be the outcome for us too... 3 -4 weeks from now I should have the answer (nailbiting). We have been thinking of getting another cat, but knew we couldn't if what Butchie has would infect the other cat - it would just be cruel in that case!

Just got back from the vet with the doxycycline, but she said the tablets need to be given whole  I have always crushed up his tablets and put it in his lysine or a liquid snack... She said it can be abrasive in the esophagus, so can't be crushed, and I'm wondering how to go about this!?

Butchie is really weird with any solid bits of food, which is why I've struggled with all types of wet or chunky food. He won't just swallow something solid, he'll try to chew it! Any ideas on how to make him swallow them without chewing? :( I am imagining myself and hubby with 2 weeks of force feeding him these tablets once a day... :cautious:

@Cinafina Ask your vet for a "pill popper "
My vet give it free for the asking
Wish I would have asked while I was there the first time !

I got an extra one online to keep in my stash
Makes pilling soooo much easier !
Doxcycline is a great antibiotic

Lol just got some for myself today for a rope burn

Keep us updated often head smooches to Butchie

@Cinafina , saw Amazon carries the pill popper
As well as other sites

I prefer the one without the finger loops
I got a pill splitter at the dollar store

Here is a pic of my fav must have
My boy was on 3 pills a day for months -
After a few times he got used to it
I would straddle him on the bed and use the pill popper
He lay there calmly like no biggie - praise amd a treat after

You can ask your vet to shoe you hoe to use the pill popper

There are you tube videos too I posted in the past

@Yoda mom Ooh, that looks like what we need! If only I'd known they existed when I was at the vets :ROFLMAO: I'll be ordering one right now! The vet nurse did show me some sort of appetizing putty for putting tablets in, but that wouldn't work for us as he'd still try to chew it! They didn't mention these... Thank you!

Hands down I am dome trying to use my fingers to pill a cat lol!
This is a finger saver and very easy to use
It has a split rubber tip thst holds the smallest of pills too

Here is a video to help
How to Give Your Cat a Pill: Step-by-Step Instructions from a Veterinary Technician - Carrington.edu
There are several out there
I still prefer the straight pill popper
Best cheap investment along with a pill splitter

I actually didn't even have to use a burrito towel
I just straddled when he woke up and at bedtime
Was soo quick amd easy I was stressing when I saw how long and how many pills he would take over months the pill popper worked great !

@Cinafina * I also keep a needless plunger styringr the vet gave me
I put a little water in it to wash it down if necessary
Just a little water with the plunger I'm the side of the cheek worked for my boy

What are Butchie's symptoms?

He had a sniffle from the day we picked him up, which turned into a very snotty nose, which causes him to sneeze quite a lot to get rid of it. Also, his eyes are runny on and off. Having found out he has Mycoplasma means his immune system is suppressed and has got secondary infections because of it, like upper respiratory infection twice in the last 6 months.

Genevieve has had sneezing that produces mucous and watery eyes all of the four weeks I have had her. After reading your post, I wonder if she doesn't have the same thing.

Yes, you probably saw my post on your thread and it sounds very similar. When Butchie was neutered about 2 weeks ago his vet did a load of tests: FIV, FeLV, Herpes, Calici, throat and eye swabs and blood work. It's a good thing to combine with neutering or spaying since they're already under from the anesthetic. These tests cost us about £350 or $450.

The pill popper looks great. You could also open his mouth, put the pil way back in his mouth, close his mouth and keep it close until he swallow. Be fast, cause he won't like this;-)

@Cinafina I know this was quite some time ago, but I was wondering how you got on.
Jezzy was diagnosed with Mycoplasma 2 years ago, but didn't get doxicyclene. We had Opthalon and Maxidrol eye ointment, which cleared up the eyes.
BUT... I think it's back with a vengeance now. She has really bad eyes, and back on the Opthalon with an eye wash before the ointment twice a day.
We changed vets, as the previous one -- eye specialist -- was not very nice to Jezzy. He sedated her without even telling me. I mean, suddenly my cat throws up badly, then collapses in a heap. I was furious. I mean, language barrier and all, but "Sedation" is a word I recognize in French, too!
I asked the new vet about the doxi, but she said we need to get the eye infection down first, as it can react with the ointment, and that mycoplasma is notoriously difficult to clear. (I took the old test results along, which she was very appreciative for, as it gives her an idea of her history.)
And... she was really, really sweet with Jezzy. :) (Who entranced the entire practice again lol.)
Poor Jezzy, she was really good about the ointment before, but really doesn't like it this time around, so I guess it hurts really badly. Poor thing.
We shall persevere. But yeah, wondering how it went.
