Hi again. Larry has a very frustrating habit of causing injury to himself, and we have absolutely no idea how he does it. We just got back from a long weekend vacation (we have a live-in cat sitter) and Larry had this mark on the left side of his neck. Tonight, we both went to the gym for an hour, and when we got back, he had a bookmatched mark on the right side of his neck! For the life of me, I cannot figure out what he is doing to himself. We don't have anything sharp or dangerous where Larry resides, but he manages to injure himself on a weekly basis. Please ignore his dirty neck -- bath day is tomorrow -- but if you have any ideas what this type of injury could be from, please do reply!

We have seen Larry use things like zippers and cardboard to itch / scratch his face, and he will do that until he gets an abrasion, but this is something new and larger. He doesn't seem to have any pain from it, but we'd still like to keep him healthy and we feel like we're failing to protect him -- from himself.

Are your cats self-mutilating as well?

Any chance this is from excessive heat/sunbathing?
One of ours looks exactly like this and he looks exactly like Larry. I see new marks on him constantly - doesn’t seem to bother him much. I think it’s from sunbathing…

@Mocha , my Batman is 14 1/2. he constantly rubs on stuff, the dogs bones, the carboard floor scratching post. he has a permanent brown mark now on the side of his temple.

does Larry rub his neck on a sisal scratching post? the round like curve on the neck, I would look for something circular perhaps rubbing on?
my crew notorious for rubbing on sisal parts of a cat tree. and get neck marks.

is there anything warm that he maybe touching? candle jars etc?

hugs n head smooches, following for the mystery to be solved

My kitty quite often looks like this. I never see it happen but I do see her rubbing against her scratching post sometimes.

Toni has those marks as well. I have located a place on her dewclaw that if its not clipped exactly right she can get marks exactly like shown. Paka used to get them too and we always thought the others were trying to strangle her. ;-) Toni does that rubbing thing and drives my husband a bit bonkers when she does it in the middle of the night. I try to scratch her there so she gets that need satiated. We have a toy like a 18 inch brush bent in half and fixed to a stand that they can scratch against on the outside and walk through and scratch on the inside. I get a picture at home.
