Hello!

I was curious if anyone would have an idea about this. My sphynxy has two nails that haven't been growing. The rest of her nails are just fine - I clip them regularly but two on her left front paw are always short and it seems they just barely cover the quick area. Also, when I clean them she seems rather uncomfortable (not every time, though). Otherwise they look like they are splitting, but no more than her other claws. Meanwhile, these two nails haven't been clipped for about as long as I've had her.

The vet suggested I give her omegas+b vitamin capsules which were prescribed for two weeks. After that I've been giving her my omega capsules (adjusted to her recommended daily vitamin intake). Of course, they nails are still not growing. I also told the wet that if this was caused by vitamin deficiency, then most likely all the nails would be affected.

I thought maybe the nails have been damaged somehow, but I wouldn't know how that could have happened. I've had her for a year and noticed this about 6 months back. The vet still has no idea what the cause could be and just keeps telling me to give her vitamins.

Any ideas and suggestions would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you :).

I would agree with @Lickleone, perhaps he is chewing them down himself. If they aren't bothersome or there is no change, I would say not to worry about it. Do you happen to have a picture of the nails? :)

I very rarely clip nails. Pixie cleans them herself, for one thing. (And does a great job of it)
The back paws I've never had to clip at all. I don't know if that's because she's very active and runs around like a blue arsed fly, or because I have tons of "Scratching posts" (aka sofa, armchair) and a scratching barrel which she makes a lot of use of.
Like others have said, if they aren't uncomfortable or infected or anything, I'd just leave them and keep an eye on them.

Thank you for your replies.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture - it's very hard to keep her still long enough to take one :D

I guess I will have to keep an eye on whether she does indeed chew on them. Just so weird that it's just those two nails :)

@Daina my first two thoughts as I read your question above:

1) she's doing a fine job herself "filing" down those two nails

2) a vitamin/diet problem

Being that it's just those two nails and only on one paw, she's a bit uncomfortable when you touch them and there is cracking of the nails tells me that something may be wrong. Has your vet examined the surrounding area very, very well to see if there is anything wrong?
Also, while she's sleeping, that's a good time to take a photo of her paw/nails if you want to.

Check to see if that paw or those digits feel colder than her other paw, etc. Just to rule out circulation problem. The vet I'm sure has checked her heart.
