Hello to all you beautiful sphynx cat lovers! Any advice will be useful. I have been reading past threads and have tried the glop and pumpkin in my kitty's diet. A little history and straight to the point;

I have a 11 month kitten named Machida who has recently lost a lot of weight. The following are symptoms that I have noted:

- I can see his hip bone and almost full spine
- His primordial fat has become a empty sagging sack
- Two weeks ago he had one day of vomiting which in the vomit I found a rubber band he ingested (I am extremely careful with the rubber bands and am not sure how he got a hold of it, I think a friend left one behind)
- two weeks ago he had a tiny pimple on the lining of his mouth it was dark in color and when I popped it only blood came out. I think it was a blood blister or a ingrown hair or a blackhead. It is still a mystery to me.
- Machida likes to eat moths and beetles (not sure if this is relevant)
- Two weeks ago I noticed a little bit of mucous in his stool thought it was normal until I started reading up in the forums
- Two weeks ago I left on vacation for a week. Machida stayed in my apartment with my other two cats and my sister came over every other day to change water and replenish food as well as give treats. My niece came with her and may have overfed him with some treats. I have two 5 gallon water dispensers with carbon filters.
- My sister contacted me on my last day of my trip to inform me that she was concerned about Machida because he looked really thin.
- I came home and sure enough Machida was thin. He is not eating his dry food at all and was only licking the juice/sauce of his wet food not picking anything up.
- I bought him sour cream and give it to him mixed with some plain yogurt. He eats about a spoonful a day.
- I have seen machida licking the concrete of my balcony several times. I stop him but he keeps doing it
- I also noticed that he has been tearing up cardboard with his mouth and spitting it out. So relieved he wasn't actually eating it
-his gums are pale pink almost white.

At first I thought he may have been depressed because I left or he may have lost some weight because I wasn't here to cover him up at night and there may have been one slightly cold night in the high 60s low 70s. I live in South Florida so yes that is cold for me. I gave him extra attention and care and have been trying to get him to eat but he is not eating to his full potential. He is sleeping almost 24 hours a day and I try to play with him and he is not my usual kitty.
I took him to a vet on Tuesday and unfortunately the man is so old idk if I need a second opinion. The first thing he told me was that if he still operated animals he would just open him up to see what is wrong with him! I freaked out! I let him do a X-ray which he told me Machida "might" have one enlarged kidney but he doesn't know for certain. There was nothing visible obstructing his bowels. Machida is not the first sphynx he has treated. He did a temperature check and at the same time collected a stool sample which the poop was soft. He then proceeded to draw blood and it took two pricks to the neck and four to the leg for him to get the blood. He told me the first sample he took clotted and he needed another. He told me that we would get a full blood panel that will likely tell us everything he doesn't have!

I am going to get the results tomorrow for the exams. My question is should I just take Machida to a cat hospital? I have already thrown away $300 on the visit I did on Tuesday. Should I trust this vet to figure out what he has? The vet had awesome reviews on google and I might just be reading too much into the vet's lack of professionalism.

In conclusion and with my excessive online reading I think Machida may have any of the following or none:

-depression
-parasitic blood infection
-I thought gastritis but now not so sure
-heart arrhythmia:(
-nothing at all just a growth spurt
-heart disease

anything I can do to rule somethings out? He didn't like the glop and I either didn't hide the pumpkin enough in his wet food or he didn't like it. (My other cat devoured the pumpkin in the wet food)

One last thing, HE STILL PURRS WHICH I AM TAKING AS A POSITIVE SIGN

Get the results and if not comfortable get a second opinion immediately. The test results can be sent over to the second vet, so it is not a waste of money. The licking of the concrete can mean a vitamin deficiency, kidney issues, also licking concrete can be a sign of pica. For your kitten to drop weight suddenly and now boney it is not depression and cats do not only purr because they are happy. I'm glad you got to the vet...keep trying to get him to eat. Here is a recipe for helping to add on weight Fattening up Brian - GLOP recipe please update us.

Sorry to hear this. @Catzzzmeow gave great advice. White gums concerns me "The most common causes of pale gums in cats are anemia or decreased blood flow to the organs and tissues due to shock, low blood pressure, and internal bleeding. All of which are life threatening and should be seen by a veterinarian." Also, at this point any food will do. Try boiling chicken, no spices. Add rice later if he eats the chicken. I recommend a second vets opinion sooner then later. Please keep us posted. Welcome by the way! :)

@MajikkuMachida , ((Healing vibes sent))) to Machida , ((hugs))) I personally would get second opinion sooner than later if I was not impressed with the first vet and having the white gums. Are his gums dry or moist when you rub your finger on them?

I would go to the vet's office and ask for a copy of his chart notes and flood test print out "for your records" so you have the results on hand And take with to another vet.

What area are you in?
**You can post a thread looking for a vet recommendation and hopeful a member can provide some vet names.

Did the vet Check for hydration - Turgor skin test ?

Did they do m early to rule out obstruction amd check inside his mouth ?
I would write a list and take with me for all the things you want checked
Look in mouth , listen to heart , palpate abdomen , take temperature, Turgor skin test , etc

You can call the vet and ask if you can give clear unflavored only pedialyte for hydration -
With a small plunger dispenser many vet gives for the asking

Sending a lair full of prayers and positve vibes for Machida
We are here for you

Keep us update often

@yodamom @admin @Toa and Ross @thedaysleeper @Catzzzmeow thank you all for your quick response and well wishes.

Unfortunately I just found out Machida has a corona virus that is fatal I feel like such a bad cat mom and I don't know what to do. I am going to take it one step at a time. I have some more results I'm waiting for so I made a appointment to take him to a cat hospital that specializes only in cats. I feel so bad for him he is such a sweet lovable kitten. I am going to open a thread in the meantime to seek local advice on the best vet I can take him to in my area.

@MajikkuMachida I'm so sorry to hear Machida has the corona virus. Does this mean she has FIP? Cause the corona virus itself shouldn't be fatal.
Please don't feel a bad mommy, it's not your fault Machida has the corona virus. And you're given her all the love she needs. Hope the specialised hospital can help you!

Sending a big hug!

It's not your fault. Don't feel guilty. You took him to the Vet
as soon as you knew something was wrong.
That's all you can do. You've loved him.
Done only good for him. See the specialist, go from there.
Will pray for your baby. Keep us updated.

Hi all, thank you all for the support. I have now taken Machida to 5 different vets including a cardiologist and I am sad to report that it is indeed Dry FIP. He has had a CBC test, urinalysis, a chest X ray, abdominal X ray, echocardiogram, and abdominal ultrasound. It is such a horrible disease. He is still fighting but not doing good at all. I am struggling with the decision to euthanize him. It is against my nature to give up. The disease has hit his central nervous system and he wobbles when he tries to walk. Of all the places I took him only one offered to help me fight. They gave me nutrients, a appetite stimulator and a beta blocker for a heart murmur that was discovered and I actually hoped at one point it was heart failure vs. FIP. It wasn't what he needed but it helped me help him a little bit. All these vets cared about was to get me in the door charge me then tell me that they are not willing to treat him. This disease is probably still fatal because these vets just write it off as untreatable. I did so much research and found some drugs that help but since they are classified as experimental no one would prescribe them to my machida. The one that shows promise in dry FIP is PI and I even called the company to find vet's in my area that may carry it. It is currently only FDA approved to treat the herpes virus. I even contacted the top researcher for FIP Dr. Pedersen who was very kind to respond and offer advice. I stubbornly did not believe it was FIP and was hopeful I would get to the bottom of it because everyone was so easy to draw the conclusion that it was FIP and everything I read was that it is difficult to diagnose and often misdiagnosed. I can't pick up the phone to make that last call for him. My sister even offered to do it for me. I want to keep him so bad. I can't let go, I love him so much. Just the thought brings me to tears. I don't know if I will ever be a sphynx mom again.

Hugs to you all and thank you so much for the love. I wish you and all your kitties good health and happy lives!

I'm very sorry. I know your heart is broken.
He had the best love while he was with you and
if you have him put to sleep, that's the last thing
You can do, to, keep him, from suffering.
Prayer's for you, for comfort and peace.
