Hi everyone , my name is Jess and I am totally new to the world of sphynx.
We have had our little white nude sphynx for 9 days now and I am struggling to know what the best shampoo is to use on his skin.
He has also come out in brown freckles it looks like on his skin. I have tried to limit time in the sun through the blinds and I have bathed him once . However I'm Not sure what these freckles , if they are freckles , are.
Can anyone please help ??

I got told it might be the dirt he is sweating through on his body. I am just awaiting a delivery to try a anti bacterial , anti fungal shampoo.

Any tips or advice with anything would be much appreciated ,
I am uploading a picture of Binx and then some of his freckles that I need some advice about.

Thanks

Jess

What a cutie!!!

It is a yeast. Use a bit of coconut oil for bathing routine. You don't need a ton as it is an oil. Rub into the skin and then rinse and use a shampoo. I use an oatmeal based shampoo by Burt bees for pets but have used main and tail as well. Also only bath him once a week or twice a month. If you over bath it causes the natural oils to over produce. You will get the hang of it over time!

Definitely yeast. If it doesn't clear up easily on its own you can purchase a medicated shampoo from your vet.

All cats have natural skin oils and their hair normally absorbs it. The sphynx obviously doesn't have hair or an amount that will absorb the oils so it can sit on the skin and make the skin too moist causing the yeast. It could also be due to an allergy (food or environmental).

I'm not sure if you can get those products in the U.K. But a quick google search would help

Something else common for sphynx owners is brown stains (sphynx rust) on surfaces, bedding and furniture. Don't freak it's normal and due to the oils in their skin not being absorbed. Most sphynx parents work around this by buying darker stuff but you could also use a combo of peroxide, baking soda and water in water. Buy a cheapo spray bottle and spray down lighter fabrics and or surfaces and wash normally.

Welcome to sphynxlair! Binx is so handsome and cute. With 9 weeks he's very young. Most of the time sphynxes stay with their catmommy till they're 12-14 weeks old so they learn to socialise and get stronger. But I'm sure Binx will do fine at your place. I would go to the vet if you have any worries about his health. Try not to bath him too much (once in 2 weeks would be more then enough, once a month is possible) so his skin wouldn't get too dry.

Hope to see and hear a lot about Binx.

Binx is a cutie. I love the pic where he's hanging off Daddy's butt! That happens a lot in my home too! LOL Basically humans are cat trees for Sphynx.

A vet visit to confirm yeast or other would likely be in order, but I also defer to those above with more knowledge and experience in yeast (I have none).

Ultimately you don't want to bathe too frequently (shoot for once a month or 6 weeks) or else they'll produce more oils. Once a week or so between full baths, wiping down with warm water (I fill a sink with very warm water and about 15 baby wash cloths and a teensy bit of their shampoo) and a wash cloth just to remove surface dirt is good.

Let us know how it goes and please share any pics and stories you might wish to.

Hi @Binxthesphynx I am also from U.K , London.

Binx looks like a naughty cutie.

Oatmeal shampoo try Malacetic or Pet Head (both online or Pets at home) or Dorwest (viovet online).

I was bathing Luna weekly. And using coconut oil daily (she had very dry and flaky skin). Then we ended up with an ear infection and were told whilst she's on ear drops not to bath her.
Guess what - she is silky smooth. Moral to the story - I give her shampooless bath every 7 days and 14th day is shampoo bath. Water wipes (I found baby wipes are too harsh for her) daily (face, body, legs and backside). I have white sheets on my bed, and they are still white.

You will fall into a routine, Binx will tell you what he wants and needs.
