New kitty today- coughing?

Hello All

We just picked up our sphynx kitten today and he is absolutely gorgeous! Very playful since we got him, running around and feeling happy.

However, on a way home - approx. 1 hour into our car journey, he started to cough. I thought it could be hiccups, but it looks more like a cough (struggling to attach video).

When we got home, he has been playing for over 3 hours, ate his dinner (no pee or poo yet), no coughing whilst he is running around and playing, only when he sat down and tried to relax...

I emailed to the breeder and sent over the video, but she wasn’t sure why or what that was as there was no issue before.

Any advice on this please?

@Gabby K , Happy Gotcha day! did you decide on the name Max :)?
Head smooches sent

Will send you a link for video postings (YouTube it and upload on the Sphynx lair )

Do you have a wellness check with your vet ? Some contracts have a clause
Always good to vet check to get a working relationship with your vet and a good baseline.
You can ask about a poo sample to bring to the vet
I always ask the vet for a good listen to the heart for any murmurs (they can have them when they are young and outgrow and even a little stress murmur fro, the vet visit ) so don't worry .
Also , just a thought - was he in a carrier with blanket perhaps irritated by fabric softener on blanket ?
They can be sensitive little boogers

some newly brought kitties can get stress related URI (upper respiratory infection)
- been there done that - meds usually clears it up quickly -

Please give your baby a big welcome home head smooch :)
Look forward to lots of pics and tales!
So excited for you !

Thank you so much for your answer- I am feeling sooo stressed!

He was in the blanket we brought over 3 weeks ago when we went to see him, so he was used to it.
Was just surprised that the cough started so quickly!

I will keep an eye on him tomorrow and if it doesn’t go, I’ll take him to the vets ( he needs to go in to get registered anyway...) The breeder said that if he doesn’t get better in 2 days, I should bring him back to her... ?

@Gabby K He is soo stinkin cute!
His eyes look clear and bright :)
Sometimes a cough is just a tickle of irritation
Is a frequent or intermittent cough ? wet ? Dry ? Any nose boogers or eye boogers ?
I would for peace of mind call the vet and book a gotcha wellness check
Amd keep in close communication with your breeder
Enjoy your baby! Absolutely adorable!

You named him Max ? As I recall

That’s right - we kept his name as Max ! He is eating and drinking well, really active- although he’s just having a well deserved nap!

The cough is probably every 30-40 mins , irritated cough type if it makes sense... Last only couple of secs...
No eye discharge, and no runny nose (although he was sneezing last night)

I am taking him tomorrow morning to get registered at vets and also check this up too!

What a cutie.
As Yoda mom stated, at first sight he looks fine.
Maybe something simply tickled his throat? (bit of dust or stress) who knows.
But it's good you can ask your vet during registration if he can quickly check it out. (y)
How did it go? I hope all went well! Positive vibes send.

thank you! It’s been very strange today- not much cough for past 5 hrs until now , he coughed 4-5 times in a space of 10 mins... but no sneezing and he’s sleeping again...
No runny nose or eyes... I am interested to hear what the vet will say tomorrow...

@Gabby K maybe this sounds really silly and I have no idea if it's possible...but could it be a "I'm stressed/nervous cough?". Like some of us humans cough when feeling nervous? Like I said maybe this is a very silly idea. Hopefullt the vet knows what it is!

What a very very handsome dude Max is. Great name :).
The cough could be from the sudden activity and move. There could be so many other reasons, but a vet visit would definitely be the best thing to rule out things like allergies, URI etc. But it doesn't seem to be a URI since his eyes look clear.
Please keep us posted. Again, happy Gotcha Day.

@Gabby K , Awh Max is soooo photgenic camera ham! Adorable

positive vibes for Max's vet visit tomorrow -
I wrote down questions to ask bcz I always forget omce I am there amd remember on the way home
i ask if they microchip during neuter
Another thing is Sphynx often have normal ear gunk bcz they have no hair im their ears .
During some vet visits ear gunk has been mistaken for mites - just a FYI

I always ask them to take a good listen to their hearts for any murmurs
You can bring a poo sample in case it needs to be checked

I am sure everyone will love Max!

Look forward to updates!

Hi All

Just thought I will keep hoi posted- Max went to vets on Monday, where he was given antibiotics for URI- he had clear chest and his heart sounded very good...

I know it’s only 3rd day on antibiotics (to take for 2 weeks), but he is sneezing a lot (no coughs now)- and has got a congested nose.

Shall I try the steaming in bathroom to help? Is there anything else I can try?

Also , I am in England where the temperature is dropping down recently, so shall I be conscious of having windows opened etc?

Thank you so much for your advice!

Hello :)

Just a quick update on Max- he was given antibiotics for URI, as his chest & heart sounded clear (which is good!)... I know he’s been on them for only 3 days (should be taking them for 2 wks), but he keeps sneezing and has got congested nose

I read that steaming in a bathroom should help- but is there anything else?

Also, the temperature here in UK is dropping down at the moment- shall I be conscious about hving the windows opened tiny bit?

Thank you ever so much

Awh healing vibes Continue for sweet Max
Glad the antibiotics are kicking in :)
I personally would not open windows
Don't want any chance of escaping

Others will chime in on the steaming experience if beneficial
I personally just let the antibiotic run its course amd recheck
Good sign in 3 days seeing results already

I am thinking same- no cough must be the good sign, just to fix the sneezing and congestion then

What a handsome baby! I can’t tell you how many new kitties I know that were brought into households that caught URI’s. Almost every new cat or kitten I brought home had one. Steaming in a closed restroom does help, you may want to bring some toys and treats since his patience may wear thin. Congrats and hope he feels better soon!

@Blackcat1313 , great advice ((hugs))) glad to see you on the lair missed you

@Gabby K
Checking in for updates
Amd continued positive vibes

Hello
Max is doing fine! He has got no sneezing or coughing, but we keeping him on the antibiotics until they’re finished....

He is such a lovely character- loves to be caried around like a little baby ... well that’s what I am thinking anyway- he looks pretty comfortable when carried around!

I have spotted something else though- not sure if I should start a new thread???
He has got a little bump near his ear, which I actually noticed since 2nd day of having him. The vet said it could a little cyst and just to keep an eye on it...
Have you ever seen this before? Xxx

Awhhh so stinkin cute!
Feel free t outset a new thread so others can chime in

What did your vet say it was ?
They usually can palpitate it and see if it is freely moving

Kitties can get Benign fatty lipomas or a clogged Follicle-
I would keep your vet updated and keep an eye out on it like they suggested

Perhaps biopsy down the road if the vet feels it is necessary

My 8 yr old boy and has some lumps

So happy Max is no longer coughing or sneezing
Kudos to you for finishing the antibiotics too!
Often times people stop midway when they see improvement

Head smooches to adorable Max!
