Hello Sphynx Lair--
In March I adopted a 5-year-old male Sphynx, Nuru, that had been kept by neglectful owners. Since receiving him, I have had several problems with litter box training, "poop tail," and chronic diarrhea. Upon adopting him, I learned that Nuru had Irritable Bowel Disease. I knew that this meant he would require extra care, but I did not expect that I would be completely unable to litter box train him and have to watch him suffer through such painful bowels. I understand that he does not want to use the box with the level of watery diarrhea he discharges but there is nothing I have been able to do to harden his stools. He always pees in the boxes, but he poops everywhere else. I have done everything possible to try and train him to go in the box but it has been 7 months and I cannot keep cleaning diarrhea off my carpets every minute of the day. With such liquid stools, there is an added issue with "poop tail," (his tail dips into his poop and gets everywhere, it is simply disgusting.) There is nothing I have not tried and I need help because no one, including my vet and others, knows what I can do anymore.
After adoption, I took Nuru to the vet and had a full exam, including: x-rays, urine analysis, blood test, allergy test, parasite test, and stool sample testing. In addition, I have had countless follow up appointments since. He currently has two litter boxes, which I monitor and clean constantly. I've tried cat attractors and do not use any odorizing formula.
When I got him, I did a lot of research and decided on having him eat Blue Buffalo Basics Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Formula, Turkey & Potato. He liked the food but it did nothing to help his system. His vet suggested adding a probiotic, which I did, but again nothing changed. The chronic diarrhea remained the same and is still never in the box. Recently, I switched his diet and he is currently eating Royal Canin Sensitive Digestion. Again, he likes the food but it has done nothing to harden his stool or help his system. He continues to diarrhea only on the floor.
I am at the end of my rope and I don't know what to do. I beg someone can help me figure out what I can give him to harden his stools and stop this issue. I love Nuru, he's a very sweet and affectionate cat but there is nothing I have not tried and I am really looking for any hope. His vet explained that with this situation it is important to consider euthanizing him but that is not even close to my thoughts so please don't suggest it.
